I've done a little bit of research into the alternate sleep patters, like sleeping a total of 2 hours a day with 15 minutes naps. There's some pretty neat stuff about it. One of the functions of sleep is to rest (obviously). You give your mind and body a chance to cool down a bit so you can start the next day fresh. If you sleep a 'normal' 8 hours a day, about 1 and a half to 2 hours of that sleep is devoted to rest. So if instead you move to the 2 hour sleep schedule, you eventually prioritize the resting function of sleep. Even though you are only sleeping 15-20 minutes at a time, you're constantly getting 'restful' sleep meaning you will always feel like you've had your full 8 hours in 15 minute bursts. There's a huge problem with this, though. 'Rest' is not the only purpose of sleep. Another major reason for sleep is so your body can heal itself. If you're only sleeping 15-20 minutes, sure you feel well rested, but your body doesn't get the chance to heal cuts and bruises as well as fight infection and disease. Have you ever had a cut on your body or a cold, went to bed and woke up with things a lot better? That's what sleeping does. Since you aren't doing much else at the time, your body has time to fix itself. And that's the trade off with the 2 hour sleep schedule, Less time sleeping means more time awake doing stuff at the risk of being susceptible to disease and slower recover time. I think this stuff is pretty interesting.

+SagBag That's really interesting, but I'd be concerned about lacking REM sleep. While you sleep you go through sleep cycles, and REM is the deepest level of the cycle. REM sleep is when the body really begins to repair and rejuvenate itself. It takes about an hour to go through a sleep cycle and enter REM sleep, so only sleeping for 20 minute intervals would severely compromise your health. There's been loads of studies which involve depriving people of REM sleep, ie. monitoring their sleep cycles via EEG and waking them up just before they enter REM. It seems like people can't function after a while on just N-REM sleep and begin to fail mentally and physically. But it'd be fascinating to see the EEG results of someone who has already adapted to this polyphonic sleep schedule. I wonder if, like you say, they would prioritize REM sleep and their sleep cycles would be much shorter...

Hey Rethh, back in the day, when time was not universal, every city will have its own time based on (not important) but the reason why people had more than one watch (a pretty normal thing) was to be able to catch a train as trains will be listed in other train stations based on the time of the city they departed from, very confusing.

I do want to try polyphasic sleeping. It could go well with lucid dreaming practice. I'm thinking two long sleep cycles at night/morning and one nap. Sounds like more sleep than I'm already getting, but if I factor in the time I'm just laying in bed awake, I could get up in the middle of the night and do things. I do get creative bursts in the wee hours, so I could write or draw between sleep cycles.
