Our dog was called Irving, Fran met him at the Alhambra, inside the Washington Irving rooms (he wrote the Tales of the Alhambra), then Irving entered his life completely unexpectedly. That was in 2001, Fran didn't want to, but Irving was so smart, so good, so cute, so polite that it was impossible not to want him. Irving died at the age of 17 and a half in January 2018 and we still miss him. For now, no other dog can take his place. Possibly, in the future and if God wants, another dog will join our life, but it must be without looking for it. He have to come alone. I love you both

Toby is the first dog I’ve had. He will be 16 next month. He has bought lots of joy to our lives. A friend that never judges you, and someone who seems to only want to please. It has been a fantastic experience, but can be hard work at times, but totally worth it. Go for it if you can x

My Husband and I’ve been together for 13 amazing years. That being said, he has a son who is an amazing human and I am fortunate to be his Dad as well. We rescued Sybil 12 years ago and Willow 8 years ago and it’s been so amazing having them in our active lives. You both can offer so much love to a rescue and having him/her as a part of making memories. Steve and I wish you both the best and by your videos you have the love it takes to Ross a companion animal.

Yes and no. If you plan to travel a lot, maybe not bc you have to find someone to care for him or her, so if you don't plan to travel a lot of course you should adopt. I hope you make the right decision. Take care

Adopting my small dog five years ago was the best thing I ever did for myself. Lisa is my confidante, companion, friend, and family member. She takes me for long walks each day, she greets her human and dog friends with tail wags, and she happily accepts constant pats on the back. She loves to chase squirrels while on shore and chases seagulls off the boat when sailing or dockside. The best part she never complains. True owning a dog is a big commitment but I can attest it’s fantastic to have a dog in your life.

A bit of advice from someone who has experience in the area. I have adopted four dogs in my life, each one was/is special in their own way. Sheba, for example was a beautiful Shetland sheepdog with a whacky sense of humour and a maternal attitude to her “owners”. The first piece of advice is...a dog may find you, as opposed to the other way round. As far as long dog names are concerned, we used to call Sheba “Sheebs” or “Tutti fruit”. She always came back.

Guys remember one thing with pets, love conquers all. You both obviously have a lot of love to give and there are so many dogs that want nothing more than to love and be loved.

A couple of thoughts. Adam is right, there is no perfect time to adopt. Also, adopting is a huge responsibility. It will definitely hinder your ability to travel and to be spontaneous (ie you want to stay some place longer, but you have to get home to walk/feed the dog). But the rewards are even greater. The love for your pet AND each other will grow in an amazing way 🥰. Think with your head, but lead with your heart and you’ll make the right decision at the right time. Btw, Bernardo looks really nice clean shaven! 😁

Tenho um outro, mais velho, que é um Fila Brasileiro, chamado Keeper, tive de deixar na chácara porque meus vizinhos estavam reclamando. Guys! It is a big step! We got our rescue Dachshund 5 years ago and it was so nerve wracking because it’s a huge commitment but you know what it was the best thing we ever did! They tune in to your life and before you know it you will be wondering what your life was like without them. Penelope was SO affectionate and trusting once she came out of her cubicle. And she was curious and interested in things, which is healthy. I wonder how Adam would have reacted if Penelope "made the apartment more comfortable for herself"... pruning the plants, rearranging the furniture, redecorating, etc. Eating food off the kitchen bench, etc. (she WOULD be tall enough to do that).

Good that you guys are thinking about adopting a dog, a lot of people jump right into it and return the dog within two weeks. I adopted my dog Bella in my sophomore year in collage and it was a tough month with scheduling and quality time with her. She was a puppy and needed a lot of training. You guys will never know if it’s the right time to get a dog but you know when you’re ready for a big responsibility. I knew beforehand Bella has a lot of allergies and health problems. She was shy and afraid of people. Helping her overcome those was the best memories I had. We gained each other trust and made a lot of wonderful adventures whether it’s outside hiking or in our home sleeping on the bed. After 6 years she passed away suddenly earlier this month. She makes me happy and I’m so thankful to have had her in my life. Having a pet opens up many different perspectives. You guys will know when you guys are ready. And adopt! You are changing these dogs life forever.

I enjoyed your video today at the humane center. Seeing all the beautiful animals was a great reminder that we don't to get a great pet from anyone but our local humane center that has dozens of beautiful animals just waiting for a loving home. Don't stress about finding just the perfect pet for the two of you. Your going to love whichever pet you decide upon and that is ALL that will mater to you. The things you thought that were important suddenly become secondary. Just find a dog you feel a connection with and the rest will work itself out. As in all relationships, there will.be sacrifices but the joy and love you'll get back is more than you ever expected. 🐶

So happy to hear that you’ve taken a step on immigration. That’s really a big step and I’m sure it will take a lot of energy from both of you to complete. I’d wait on the animal ‘adoption ‘ for now. Continue to focus on your very intimate relationship and life together - before letting anything interfere with your growth. You’ve already got lots going on - and more already planned for the future. (A December wedding? Immigration? Travel?). Those were really large dogs - maybe look for a medium size one also. So here's the real deal.. the bad and the good. I have been a dog owner many times. A dog is like a child who cant take care of themself...they are a lot of responsibility! They limit your travel. I would never leave my dog in a shelter and always took my dog with me or didn't travel which could be an issue for you. I don't miss the dog hair, slobber, and dirt on their feet all over my clothes, bed, house, car, etc. constantly and the dog smell. House accidents do occur sometimes. Get pet insurance... vet bills can be expensive and also good quality dog food costs money. I don't miss the walking 3 times a day min for bathroom breaks, exercise. The good... they make a great companion and cuddle buddy and give you lots of love and fun/playtime and memories. Very Sad when you have to say good bye to them when you have all those attachments after many years. Penelope was just one day. Also a dog needs an outdoor space not a small apartment and needs to not be left alone... it is a 2 way street and you must be fair to the dog and give it the attention it needs and deserves for all the love they give you. If not then don't do it. Hope this is somewhat insightful.

Hi- from SOCAL I agree with the current thread of thinking. Another point to consider... immigration doesn't go as planned and everything changes. What happens to the dog? It's not fair to the three of you. Stay flexible and focused for the immediate task at hand.

Wow, great response. Let's see if I can cover these items. First, the dog would travel with us... everywhere. We made that decision before we even went to the Humane Society. We know we wouldn't be able to go to Hawaii, so we are up to taking sacrifices if we 100% commit to adopting a dog. We are actually treating this like a child because we have hopes to have a kid some day. We KNOW it's not the same but we are preparing ourselves for it. About the apartment: we knew that we couldn't get a huge breed which is why I stated in the video, "is he too big?" We want to be a good match for the breed and Penelope was way too big for our apartment. That was one of the reasons we didn't adopt her. Once we find that dog that meets our requirements that we want in our own lives, such as hiking, then we know we have found the right dog for us. Also, Bernardo and I rarely meet in the middle for an agreement. We both have to be 100% in it.

Since you guys travel a lot, i don't think it's a good idea. The dog will feel lonely a lot of times, at least in the shelter they have their dog friends 😊 but if you can bring the dog in your travels, then please do, that would be awesome 💕

Dogs do require time and care but the love and companionship they bring is so worth it. They are so loving and loyal. Man's Best Friend!! Penelope was adorable, looked very lonely and sad in her cage😢

Plus we thought about when we travel, who’s going to look after the dog? It will just worry us if we leave it into a dog kennel. So it is a big responsibility to have one and it is nerve racking! Oh! This time you made my heart hurt. Adam I'm like you, if I'd go to adopt a dog I'd want to take every one. You have no idea how it breaks my heart to see those poor dogs all yearning for a loving home. I rescued my present dog. I'll have to try to send you a picture. She goes with me everyday on my delivery route. People all over come outside to give her treats and she gives them kisses back. She sleeps on my bed or the lounge chair every night. We go on walks 4x a day. She has many stops along the way at her favorite people's houses and gets treats a every door. I am totally dedicated to my dog. I've had 4 Rottweilers and two pits. They all have been people lovers from day one. Thanks so much for sharing both of yours love towards a dog and eventually adopting one. So proud of you both.
