i agree w your thoughts about pouring in the cold weather. i dont care what that engineer says, he has never actually finished nor has the experience that finishers have. not saying he doesnt know what ue is talking about because he makes some valid points, thanks

I agree 💯 rebar or wire is used to limit the Crack width but we've found that saw cutting is more effective in Crack control. Giving it a place to shrink Crack. Rebar or wire not necessary we use it if it's specified otherwise fiber and saw cut.

Hey Mike, I’ve got my own flatwork company in South Dakota and know all about the cold. My biggest issue comes from extreme freeze thaw cycles cracking concrete I pour in the summer. Mostly on N sides of houses that don’t see sun all winter. Driveways will heave as much as 3”!

Hey mike. Arlo shaddy here in Idaho. Been pouring mud 22 years and I can’t tell you how many slabs I’ve poured in freezing temperatures. I use a hot water, no fly ash and 2% calcium chloride mix design in the winter. It’s a little stiffer slump but it goes off quick.

That brand of screed you have the manual says you can bolt a 2x4 to length and go with that if you don`t want to cut your aluminum board, we used to take the older boards and cut them up and put new end caps on and we had every size screed after that. Your screed looks like a Multi-Quip brand screed from hear. You can get videos from Muti-Quip that shows how to screed steep driveway grades the right way ,It`s not hard to do and we have had good success with their method.

The good thing about placing concrete when it’s cold.. is that it’s not hot. I’ve done concrete in Montana in the winter, and Tucson in the summer.

I hang fiber is this cold stuff on poles in the air off a ladder and my fingers get froze. I have found that mittens warm them up pretty quick, put a couple hand warmers in them and its real quick. I carry them inside my insulated overalls and when I need to, pull em out, warm my hands, then whip the thin gloves on and repeat as necessary If I wasnt 58 and younger it would have been a pleasure to move to Maine a work for folks that have a good work ethic:)

I had to pour a 300 yd and a 200 yd slab one winter it was 13 degrees for both pours they said it had to be. at least we had a ground thaw machine layed out on both of them.overnight, It wasn`t fun trying to finish those boogers though.

Hi Mike, Great episode, I was wondering if a vapor barrier under a slab is needed in warm all-year climates? Will it hurt to use one where there is never a frost? Thanks
@gunfisher4661 Жыл бұрын
plastic is used to keep moisture from under ground soaking up thru the slab causing every thing to mold years later.

I really enjoy placing and finishing concrete, the only time it feels like hard work is when the truck just cant get close, and you have to pull it 5 or 10 feet, But sorry, not looking for work,,, the last few years no one is looking for work, they are trying not to get found till they get caught up ! But no, I own a ready mix company, and I am my only salesman, and cold weather, I caution my customers as to what can happen if it freezes, and what precautions to take.i have to wear 2 hats, on one hand I try not to throw money away during the slow season, but on the other I do not want my customers to have a bad result, And that's more important to me I am not that hungry to screw over a customer with bad advice But I understand they have to eat all year long just like the rest of us. But when its cold out like that I try and keep it pretty stiff, 1" or 2" slump, just enough to flow out the shoot. and upsell calcium or poplar set, try and close the gap let them know its a good idea to have at least 24 hours above freezing and not to overwork it The problem in the trades today is no one trained (very few anyhow) to me a mason they ended up being one, and they got trained by someone else and every generation either miss some stuff, or add some wrong information along the way. You guys to nice work, and I hardly see you look like your busting your ass, because if you have skill, you don't have to hardly at all.
