demons in frieren really are just straight up evil. there isn't much of a reason to it which I find very refreshing. other animes/mangas always try to justify why the people opposing the main character are the way they are, and being evil just for the sake of being evil is seen kind of as bad/lazy writing.

The key debate though is, "Are the demons evil?" Carnivorous animals catch other animals to eat. Are the carnivores evil or is it just the natural order of things? Demons are described as wild beasts that prey on humans. Are the demons evil or is it just the natural order of things?

Ofcourse " being evil just for the sake of being evil " is lazy writing . Demons are just animals that can talk , thats all . And just because they can talk , and we humans have feelings , manipulating those feelings with words seem evil . Thats why this kind of evil is genius . If you have ever watched Jujutsu kaisen , there is a minor spoiler ,which is not that special , you can continue reading my comment . In that world , describing your ability increases your power . This is genius ,considering ,we always criticise why does people in anime ,always yell or explain their techniques to their opponent . Jujutsu kaisen found a loophole for this error.

Actually, demons in Frieren are really like humans. They are intelligent and have their own morals. They do eat people and don't understand why should they care about human lifes, but... Humans are the same. Only in 1948 it was officially declared that human life is a value, before that we can see slavery, discrimination, segregation, cannibalism, etc. And that's not like humans before were evil. It's just their morals were different.

If a grizzly bear kills someone hiking, the bear isnt evil, because thats just how those animals are But if you were actually in the world of frieren you would have to think of demons as evil, because they are the natural enemies to humans, theres no known path for peace between them

Frieren could have explained from the start what a demon was, but who would have believed her? Even Himmel, the wisest person, interrupted when Frieren wanted to explain and chose to believe that the demon’s “child” probably deserved to live. Keep in mind, Frieren is a simple person who doesn’t involve much emotion in her decisions, so the simplest way for her was to let every villager see it for themselves, especially Himmel.

I always compare the demons to ai like chat gpt. It mimics human speech but doesn't truly understand what it means.
