Personally I've never got on with hiking poles. I once hired a set at the start of the route up Kilimanjaro, and used them for the first couple of hours. They spent the rest of the trip strapped to my rucksack all the way to the top and back down to the bottom about 5 days later. I just hated not having my hands free. I've been trekking in the Andes, Himalayas and Africa and none of the porters or locals ever use them. It only seems to be Europeans. As for distance, whilst this route doesn't contain the big climbs (so far) that I expected from Scotland, the underfoot conditions are pretty tough and that's always testing. I always think that 20 miles is where it can get really painful unless you are used to doing that sort of distance regularly. For anybody contemplating something like this, then I would recommend doing a few walks of that sort of length before starting out on a long trek multi--day trek and making sure your feet are hardened up too. If you can, then two or three days on something like the South Downs Way or the Ridgeway is worthwhile as the underfoot conditions are a lot kinder and you can practice the distances.

The advantage of camping in the Highlands is that you can stop more or less anywhere and maybe take a day out, if you want, either to appreciate a beautiful place, sit out bad weather or just rest. Depends how much food you've got, of course, which is where lightweight dehydrated stuff comes in. It's usually nicer than it sounds these days, though expensive, but it does increase your range and flexibility.

Loving these walking videos. Hats off to Lorna for not giving up and finishing the stage, I know how she must feel, I used to be very fit and could easily walk 20+ miles in a day often doing 15-18 min miles. However discovering I've been suffering since age 9 with arthritis in my spine I'm struggling these days to walk very far at all without my back triggering and losing muscle strength in my legs. All the lockdowns in the last year haven't helped as I've been unable to get out during those times and that hasn't helped my back strength. I am however now ordering an exercise bike and aiming to try and cycle 5KM a day moving to 10KM a day in a few weeks time. I'm aiming next year to walk and wild camp the west highland way with a friend if well enough. Top tip though when walking long distance try and bring some Kendal Mint cake as it's pure sugar / energy and when you are struggling really gives you a boost of energy and gets you going again in no time.

Awesome vid, lovely views, I admire your tenacity and stamina. When I was in my 30s and at my fittest, I walked up the Wye Valley from Chepstow to Monmouth, the longest day walk I ever did, and that was about 22 miles (with a normal rucksack but over far easier terrain than the WHW). Even so, I was very knackered and could barely make 6 miles the next day as I was so sore. I was just not used to 'long distance walking'. I should have built up to it.

Not the easiest day but a brilliant walk. We didn’t see anyone walking with a dogs. If you did take a dog you would probably need to camp as I don’t think any of the hotels or hostels accommodate pets. There are also a few places where you would need to be careful due to livestock
@ramblingadventures3 жыл бұрын
It’s weird to hear the “Map my walk” voice on there. Your friend isn’t efficiently or properly using her hiking poles. There are many good videos on the correct technique but using them like ski poles isn’t one of them. Also, hiking poles use a lot of energy so are best stopped when not necessary for terrain and resumed when necessary. I know this advice is way too late but if she does another long hike, that’s important. Great Vlog!
