I think folks don't grasp how long 20 miles is to walk, let alone with a lot of elevation gain and loss, and tough unpaved trails, in the rain .. And then to do it _again_ the next day, and the next day, and .. Super glad to see Lorna back in the saddle, as they say. Such a lot of effort to keep up a pace y'all need to make the hostel before darkness set in. Good on her.

Jo, as you say stunning and what a contrast to the Norfolk and Cambridgeshire landscapes you have been showing us lately. Well done you both - not far now. Ouch. I think we would have heard if there were mass cow trampling of walkers by cows, but I do appreciate they are very large and appear intimidating sometimes. Generally I have just found them to be curious or by turn completely indifferent in the past.

It shows how long since it's been since I've visited Glencoe I didn't recognise the Kingshouse Hotel so much has been added on to it. It's somewhat legendary so I'm glad you got the chance for some soup and bread! I actually found Conic Hill, especially the high steps coming down, far harder than the scary sounding Devil's Staircase.

Good to see Lorna doing much better today but even though too late as you are home but proper use of her trekking poles would have aided her enormously. Most shots and he was just carrying dead weight and would have been better leaving them behind. Proper use is to have them with your lower arm horizontal, taking a little weight and pumping like that steam loco's pistons.That way you get less weight on your rear legs and are much less tired. Just look at the next herd of cows you meet. A leg at four corners and all giving 4 wheel drive. But you are doing OK. Psychologically try not to be too anxious to reach a half way stop accurately. Out of 15 miles don't look for 7.5 exactly or you end up doing 7.1. Go for 8 and stop a little short if a nice spot at 7.8. That way you are nearer the end. Rannoch Moor tomorrow. Enjoy.

I used to say that mid-September to October were the best time to be in the Highlands, when walking in just a tee-shirt wouldn't be surprising. Often relatively dry, too. Just relatively, mind! I wouldn't be so adamant about anything seasonal now, the climate being so tapsaltearie.* Really enjoying these vids! Thanks again. ============== * A great word from Burns. It doesn't mean "topsy-turvey" as some English people have guessed, but "topsail torn". The wee topsail on the midden mast of the 3-masted vessels of Burns; time didn't provide much propulsion but was essential for stability. Without it, the ship was very hard to control and could be dangerously all over the place.

I've downloaded the a .gpx file of the route, and put it into my mapping software, so I can see that you started out with the flater parts of the route and it gets hillier towards the end. You seem to have been lucky (so far) with the weather given this is October in West Scotland. Well done for Lorna getting that far and not taking the easy option on the train. Some beautiful scenery. I'm not quite sure what I expected of the West Highland Way, but it's now clear that it follows the general direction of North-South route from Fort William and avoids the mountain tops. The Wainright Coast-to-Coast is a bit different in that respect, as the route basically cuts across the main North-South route, and there aren't many places where it parallels a main road. It is also, surprisingly, rather more hilly, especially if you take some of the options through the Lake District. For example, from Ennerdale you have the option of going up to Red Pike and following he ridge to Haystacks on your way to Borrowdale (which is a gorgeous route, but a lot tougher). Similarly, on the way from Grasmere to Patterdale you can go via Helvelyn (which we avoided when I did the route, as it was covered in heavy snow). The C2C is quite mix-and-match in that way. It's not an official long distance path, and Wainwright positively encourage people to try variants. The way-marking is nothing like you'll find on the West Highland Way.If you do plan to do it as well (and I strongly recommend it, as it is glorious and has a lot of variation), then it rewards a lot of planning and be prepared for some steep climbs on rocky paths, especially through the Lake District. It's an interesting contrast to this route, and there are places where it's easy to get lost if the clouds come down - at least in the days before GPS.

The next one of these walks (I hope there is one) you should plan your walk lengths better. I used to do a two week bike tour every year and even though I rode an average of 9000 miles a year the tours were painful. I quickly learned that I needed to ride myself in. I learnt to plan day lengths that started at about 60 miles (-ish) then reduced about day 4 to 50 (-ish) for a couple of days then back up to 60 (-ish) then fit the second week I could plan on 100 miles and do it easily. I guess a walking tour needs to be planned in the same way. Coast to coast next? 🤣
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 3 жыл бұрын
The walk lengths were fine for me and very close to the recommended 6 day plan for the West Highland Way. When you choose to walk with another person you have to compromise and walk at their pace or, leave them behind. I chose to walk with Lorna.

We had a family wood sawmill , often needed help and said, if you want to expend energy, help us doing work vs walking through our lands for no benefit at the end. I see your vision and drive. Each person to his or her own. I Laud you and congratulate you.
