Man, Richard is really quite knowledgeable, casually dropping something like “brandy style of aging” (transferring the aging spirit from barrel to barrel). Very thankful for this episode as rum is one of the hardest categories to navigate, especially considering that “white rum” can also be aged in barrels and then carbon filtered to remove the color (no rules)

@@pulkitgupta5367 I think that's what the OP has in mind, but I don't think that's how Barbancourt ages their product. I wouldn't describe solera as a "brandy style of aging" because it is just as commonly used for other spirits including rum.

@@economicsjingle Solera style rum is one thing (and more often than not it doesn't follow the rules for brandy. Botran used to claim the used the Solera method both have moved away from this labeling because 1. This isn't what they are doing and 2. EU has forbidden solera being used as an age statement. However many rum when ageing a collected same batch (so naturally same year) are collected into fewer and fewer barrels because the angel share is so high around or above 10% compare to 2% for European whiskey and about 4% for bourbon produced in the south.

12:49 -- I think Richard implied this when he said "clear versions of rum", but I figured I'd mention this for the sake of clarity. Some clear rums aren't new make. They are aged in barrels long enough to have a color, but then they get filtered to the point when they become clear again. There are different reasons for this, but the point here is that not all clear rums are new make. I hope I don't sound like a smartass :)

Yeah, there's a load of 3 year old white rums, Flor de Caña does a 4 year old extra seco white rum and even a 7 year old blanco reserva white rum, even Bacardi's white rum has a minimum of 1 year aging on it. I've recently discovered and recommend Appleton Estate 12 Year Rare Casks Jamaica Rum. It comes across more as a whiskey both on the nose and palate. It's great to pair with a 50-75% cacao chocolate that has classic chocolate notes and isn't overly fruity; likewise, this is a good rum for a ganache because of the dark cocoa and vanilla notes. My current favorite scotch is The Dalmore 12 Year (has similar flavor notes), and I am a chocolatier, so Appleton Estate 12 Year Rare Casks Jamaica Rum is in my opinion great for whiskey drinkers, people who like an aged rum that isn't sweet or tropical, and chocolate lovers.

Iced wines and sauterne are still my favs. Years ago I would buy a very expensive sauterne for select parties. I had to carefully sneak it in and stash it way back in the fridge wrapped in a brown paper bag. These were very tiny bottles and wouldn't have many servings, usually costing between $80 and $200 for one bottle depending on what was in stock (there was a bottle I always dreamed about that was priced at over a thousand bucks. It was very old). I couldn't afford to do it all the time. The rule was I waited until all the "riffraff" left the party and only the core group of long-time friends were left then I would bring it out. Yummy.

Thank you very, VERY much for this one. After listening to the comments about each of the various rums I paused the video to check the web site of my local state-run distilled spirits vendor to see if they were available here. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the two that sounded like they might be most likely to please my unsophisticated, childlike palate -- the Smith & Cross Jamaican and the Dos Maderas PX 5+5 -- are available here and affordable to boot. Both were, however, listed as being in "Limited Distribution" here. Nevertheless, using the web site's reports of which of their stores had each of them (which I have learned are always to be regarded as being of dubious veracity) I was able to find a few reasonably nearby stores where it was at least claimed that these two rums can be found. And so I set off on a two and a half hour road-trip odyssey, completing a circuit that took me to 5 stores and by the time I had reached the third store I had secured a bottle of each along with three bottles of my usual tipple. I was able to find the Dos Maderas PX 5+5 in a limited edition gift box set that included a pair of glasses that look to me as though they could be used for on the rocks and some cocktails. At the fourth store I found more of the gift boxed Dos Maderas, and after reconsidering my original thought to buy just one, and particularly as I was recalling Briana's extremely positive reaction to the stuff, I decided to splurge and buy another so I will have 4 of the glasses and another bottle to enjoy. I tried the Dos Maderas pretty much as soon as I got home, and it certainly did not disappoint. Very yummy! I will try the Smith & Cross Jamaican on some later date. Thanks for the recommendations, with a special nod and tip of the fedora to Briana for her enthusiastic review of the Dos Maderas.

One rum I know they probably couldn't obtain would be a standard cuban havana club, I've tried it once and it was one of the only rums I would could drink neat(i love cocktails). Like most, if not all of us, watching this channel, I'm a whiskey drinker(again mostly cocktails). Standard cuban havana club hopefully one day could be exported to the states, it will unseat many stalwarts in the industry (same could be said of entry level cuban cigars)(( those who have had a dr monte and a cuban monte can agree)).

Also rums from Jamaica (Hampden, Long Pond and Appleton), Saint Lucia (Chairman's Reserve)Barbados ( Foursquare)and Guyana (El Dorado). The El Dorado go to are their 12, 15 and 21 Years Old. They also have some cask strength in their Rare Collection. For example Albion 2004. In the EU they made a new rule in 2021. You got to try some very good rums! If you want to try a few others that have a nice bourbon or whiskey influence, I have a few recommendations: Don Q rums from Puerto Rico are very good. The 7 year is quite nice, as is the Anejo. They also have a few rums finished in select casks, including rums finished in vermouth and sherry casks. From Barbados, Doorly's 12 and Doorly's XO are both sold at a great price point and are produced by Foursquare. Another Barbados rum, Mount Gay Black Barrel, has some nice oaky notes. If you want to get a little funky, Worthy Park rums from Jamaica have an amazing flavor and some of that true Jamaican funk (or try one of the Hampden rums if you really want to go crazy with the high ester funkiness). For those who enjoy rye whiskeys, give Grander Rye Barrel finished rum from Panama a try. Grander also has had rums finished in Agave, Islay Peat, and Speyside barrels. If you like a little higher proof, seek out rums from Holmes Cay. These rums are sourced from all over the world, including Africa, Australia, Fiji, and Guyana to name a few. And in the U.S., Privateer in Massachusetts is making some delicious American-style aged rums that will easily appeal to whiskey drinkers. Cheers!

So I need to find that Balcones Prohibida yesterday! (Especially true as it's now Sunday and liquor stores are closed in Texas.) Also, I really liked the Plantation OFTD. Felt it was similar to whiskey perhaps in just that the high proof made it a great relaxing slow drink to enjoy straight.

Try looking for Hamden estates since you like the plantation. It tastes like whatever plantation adds to their darker blends that gives it that funky Jamaican rum flavor. They have an age statement and an overproof bottling

I'm a noob learning a ton about whiskey from your channel, and having fun doing it. Sadly, those of us rumbastiges were dissapointed to not see our "12 year Redbreast" on the list. They make their own special demerara sugar in this country and that gives us .... El Dorado 12 year. drink nice my virtual friends, T 🍀

Got a bottle of Dos Maderas yesterday. I'm a rum guy so I just had to try it and because of The Whiskey Tribe, I've found my new favorite rum. I am still a Captain Morgan and Kraken guy but I really love how sweet Dos Maderas is, I wonder how they were able to keep the sweetness in it through the distillery process or if it was through the barrel aging process that added it back in. I love this channel. I'm making a list of the bottles I want to try. The one bad thing I've found is that very few if any come in shots so there's no way to try it first before buying a bottle.

the 2007 is my favorite of the ones tried from foursquare, i get caramelized bananas, baking spices, and pleasant rum funk that doesn't over shadow every thing. I drink it neat, when ive had it on ice it gets a rancid black pepper vibe that is just not for me.

I would add Kauai Koloa Rum Company for their aged whiskey-esque offering. While their coffee (extracted not flavored), cocoa (again aged and extracted from nibs, and their traditional gold, blanco, and coconut offerings. I was not a big rum fan before tasting the process forward flavors.

Love Bacardi 8 year, really good in a rum and coke, so much caramel. General rule of thumb spiced rum will usually be sugared and if it is a colored rum then it probably has coloring added.

It depends on the distiller. Foursquare doesn't use colorings or flavorings. Richard Searle, the owner of Foursquare is a big proponent for rum rules. South American and Central American distillers are more apt to take short cuts. There is a very popular aged Venezuelan rum brand that puts a ton of sugar into their rums.

That makes sense since it's owned by Foursquare Distilleries. Some people call Foursquare "the Pappy of Rum" I think a better comparison would be to Bardstown Bourbon. They are always coming out with unique limited edition releases.

Just as good and even cheaper is Doorly's sold at Total Wine. The 12 Year Real McCoy is over $50 while the 12 Year Doorly's is under $30 and tastes very close. I've gotten the 12 year Doorly's on sale before for $23 which is insane for a FourSquare product.

Also Smith and Cross, Idk if I would've chosen it to introduce to whisky lovers. But it is an astonishing product. I've been drinking Rum (and Whisky) for over 35 years now.Bajan rums are fantastic, anything from Foursquare (Doorly's 14 my personal favourite from them) or Mount Gay is hard to beat. Appleton is a great Jamaican Rum (love the 21) as is Worthy Park. From Guyana, Eldorado (especially the 21) is fantastic. If you want the real British Navy rum experience go for Pusser's Gunpowder proof,Black Tot or Woods..
