24:27 One bright spot in all of that sorrow around eating/food/weight/appearances: in my opinion Jin set a revolution in motion with his, "Eat Jin," show. Literally today I watched a YT Short that compared how male Hybe group members eat on camera to other Idols. It was just meant as a funny video, but it dawned on me that so much of what BTS members have done on camera would have been unthinkable for any other Idol even just five years ago & still is for most Idols from the Big Three. I thought of "Eat Jin," as just a tiny pet project for Jin to interact with ARMY in a setting that's comfortable for him as a gourmand & cook. I forget, though, that other Idols look to BTS for motivation & guidance. Jin must have had a profound effect on his peers (esp. as the official, "visual," of BTS), not just by being willing to show himself looking, "unattractive," by eating on camera, but also enjoying himself and eating how & how much he wanted.

When it comes to BTS, I believe during their really early years they had to do those crazy diets. It is a sad norm in the KPOP industry. However, I don’t think they do that anymore. It is true though that not fitting the “Korean standard beauty” is frowned upon. I hope its a lot better now though. I think our boys can eat and be fit at the same time.

Yeah they’ve definitely grown since then and learned from their earlier days about what being healthy truly means. But I do still wanna scold them like a parent when I hear them make an off-handed comment on their weight 😭 it’s hard to overcome societal standards you’ve been surrounded by your entire life.

Disordered eating is rampant in K-pop. Jimin said something in a live that was pretty much you tell me to eat well but then you like me better when I’m thin. From what I’ve seen, he’s better but still doesn’t have the healthiest relationship with food. How can he with the amount of shit he gets about his weight still. I’m not diagnosing anything, just saying what I’ve picked up on. In terms of the 2016 award shows, at two of them, they got a black ocean when they performed. I can’t even imagine the emotional roller coaster that was. It makes my petty self happy that they won and showed all of the assholes that they were there to stay.

Thank you for writing this. I've seen way too many people attacked for even mentioning disordered eating & Idols in the same sentence. I don't subscribe to BMI as a good measure of health, especially since it's usually used a way of shaming people, especially obese people. That said, I do think it's instructive to look at Idols' weights in the context of socio-cultural expectations & what the implications are. Given their level & constancy of physical exertion, calorie counting should NEVER have happened for these men. BTS members may not be rigidly controlled by their company in the way that most Idols are, yet they were still maintaining shockingly low weights right up until enlistment.

I don’t think jm has a food problem, he is just vocal to when he needs to go on a diet because he knows that his face is the part of him that gets “blotted” when he eats. So when it’s time for a comeback or something he cuts salty and greasy food because of that but he likes to eat and A lot. He is just vocal about it, he lets us in in his life so we don’t follow and do the same. But people still use something that happened in so long ago as ifs happening today.

@@katianajacinto8293what you said doesn’t negate op’s statement though. him being open about it or not, it’s a fact that already having a healthy weight and still controlling your food/calorie intake and denying yourself the food you want to eat (he’s made comments of “i wish i could eat this” many times) for no other reason than fitting an insane, unhealthy standard, is still a problem. he might not be struggling like he was in the past, but he’s depriving himself of the food he likes, stressing and being self-conscious about his appearance 24/7 - even if it’s “just during a comeback”. and he’s doing it because the world, and specially korea, will judge him for having a /normal/ physique, because “beauty” is associated with not only being thin (which he already is), but /insanely/ thin. he’s also not the only member who has made comments about dieting, not eating (to lose weight), how “looking good” = being thinner, how they “looked bad” in xyz moment bcs they had gained weight (when most of the time it isn’t even noticeable, they‘re still healthy, in good shape and looking good). just last year, jk himself mentioned literally getting an IV drip instead of eating. not because he needed, but specifically to not have to eat more (and he’s not the only idol who has mentioned something like this). what doctor would ever allow someone to just get IV drips whenever they need to lose weight? sure, the whole world is harsh and judgmental and has “problematic” beauty standards, but korean in general has an unhealthy relationship with weight - and by association, food - and the members are public figures born in that environment. even if they are intelligent, well informed, open minded and conscious of their actions, most koreans around them wouldn’t bat an eye at these practices, some would even encourage it. so i don’t think them being open about it or doing it “safely” changes the fact that it is not healthy.

@@jm52hz it’s not healthy if you doing it without doctors orders, the same way it wasn’t healthy when he decided to go 10 days eating only 1 meal. That’s not healthy, but tell me wish actor/actress or singer doesn’t. It’s part of the job because they use their body’s as tool to work. I didn’t disagree with op, o disagree with the part she said he maybe has a good disorder, that’s the part o don’t agree. And specially he is always vocal asking fan to not diet because what he does is because of his job, not his life. So whether we agree or not we just want they to be safe and use safer tools because dieting whether we like it or not, will be a part of their life as a models life, or actors life, or dancers life because they use their body. But be safe. Jm loves to eat, and I love seeing him eat, but there’s pressure and all we can do it’s show love even when the pressure is strong.

Please keep in mind, these are OUTDATED clips. Jimin and the members have grown from this and have learned to love themselves for who they are. Beside the cultural glamorization of extreme dieting, the toxic staff (who has been fired), the members faced extreme blacklash and hate at the time, that changed their outlook of themselves. Jimin struggled with his image and even his masculinity at times, for a while until he came to terms and accepted himself by not listening to the opinions of others. The members also helped one another to get over these ridiculous hurdles.

Logically k-pop idols should be eating quite a bit, with food comes energy and they need that energy to tackle those crazy choreographies. It makes no sense to be dieting when dancing that hard and diligently for years already makes you drop weight. There's also bloating that natrually happens (especially with girls) and puberty to consider. These rules are stupid I'm glad that barriers are gradually breaking down when it comes to different body types too.

Actually a lil TOO COMMON cuz as toxic and unhealthy as it is, they expect idols to all fit a particular beauty standard when it comes to physical appearance and those who don't visibly gets treated VERY DIFFERENTLY from the ones who do. If someone thinks this idol is "more attractive" than their bandmate, chances are "the more attractive one" is most likely to be treated better. about the diet thing it's a you had to be there situation, in general a lot of kpop groups do extreme diets at the beginning of their careers and then they losen up. that's true for bts too, however, some of them got into the habit of getting into extreme diets before a comeback, it'd be very noticeable in jimin who fans got worried about around late 2016 early 2017 which is why rise of bangtan acknowledges it in this episode of all episodes
