In only three years one of Germany’s largest forests has turned from dark green tree cover to a graveyard of dead wood. The reason: rising temperatures and monoculture forestry.
In our third mission, we have partnered with Harz National Park, to turn things around and transform this stressed ecosystem into a strong and climate resilient forest.

Don't blame the mass dying of spruce on 'climate warming/changes'; as you said yourself, it was NOT a natural area for spruce to grow, especially as a monoculture! This mass dying event was a blessing in disguise, as an artificial monoculture was destroyed and some other trees apart from spruce got chance to grow naturally. Pollution, and trash are a real problem, but blaming many events on climate change is logically and scientifically wrong. As I understood, tree species now were planted that used to grow over there 500 years ago. So how is it related to climate change? Very political, not scientific, or did I misunderstand something?

Take care of the few older trees that are left as they are very important too to combat the bark beetle in the future. A forest of mixed age trees is just as important as mixed species to be resilient because the bark beetle mostly kills trees when they are a certain age.

Interestingly when native south American shamen were consulted they actually said the beetle was helping to restore the ecosystem, the spruce bark beetle is helping nature heal

I love this! I have a personal mission to rewild urban spaces. I encourage everyone I know to craft water features in their yards. I will also help people who need it. Adding water features like small ponds creates spaces for animals. Birds, frogs, and small mammals will use yard ponds as sources of water. When drought comes, amphibians use it to breed, and small prey draws raptors and provides food for foxes. Recently, a local wetland dried during an extremely hot summer , and we found a turtle trying to get through to our pond. We helped him out, and he/she spent the hot season with us. When the rains came and the wetlands refilled, we returned him to his natural environment. Build a pond create an ecosystem.

@planet-wild All water sources help in dry times, it is best if you also have plants around them to provide shelter moving water stays cleaner. Low balconies where I live would probably get small tree frogs as well.

Thank you for replanting this forest, I have always worked in forestry as a harvester and we always make sure that every tree we cut has at least 2-3 trees for every 1 tree we cut and I at least leave creeks and beds for animals I don’t touch those place again thank you for replanting this forest

What have you done,for example? And before you ask,i dont even mean it as it sounds.All good intentions😊Its the thing,you dont know,what you can do,if you focus on one thing or theme. I was restoring a trout stream spawning areas before the season,demolishing beaver dams etc,and it was so upliftng to see a river come to life,hundreds of offsprings in the river.Unfortunately,the river was destroyed due to a animal farming accident right at the start of the stream and about 15000dead trout were gathered from the stream,not counting those finger long offsprings.But the nature takes over anyway,2 years later there was life on the spawning grounds once again😊

I basically grew up in that forest. in a sense. It's so near by the area I grew up, we went there multiple times every weekend in the summer. I absolutly remember the dense trees, the biodiversity. Seeing it now is soo, soo shoking. it really hurts.

You may want to fence the areas that are planted, if the pressure from deer etc is too high, as they will eat all the new trees. Also keep in mind, that these old plantations where often drained, so restoring the natural streams/hrodrology etc can also be key. Mossy Earth may have some experience from Scotland and Eastern Europe.

Hey! I liked the video :) Just one thing: 6:41 The beech you showed (Fagus ferrugina?? ) is none that grows here. The only beech growing species over here is Fagus sylvatica (Rot-Buche in german, So thats probably where the mistake comes from). She is the 'strongest' tree when it comes to dominate a forest - over a long time

Great work! 🌳🌲🌳 It was not mentioned or visible in the video, but I hope enough of the dead wood is left there among the new plantings because it is crucial for a healthy ecosystem and in turn it will make the forest more resilient to climate change.

Also to combat the bark beetle it has been proven that a natural forest with a diversity of ages in the trees is really important as they are most vulnerable in a certain age a norwegian study showed. If a forest is comprised of trees that all have the same age it is much more vulnerable at a point in time when the bark beetle can kill them all instead of just a section.

Please guys make you confident with the recreation and rebirth of the national park of Bavaria. The forest died totally. Where the responsables picked up the wood to sell nothing is growing until today. On the other part, where only the necessary was fine the forest recovered itself very nice.

The way you make your videos they clear in communicating the problems and visually exciting to watch. I hope, as a former educator that you are getting the word out to all schools about your videos. Perhaps a, “ If you are sharing these videos with your schools show us on social media and we will bring in the local animal rehab group for a visit to your school.” Free PR, free PR for rescue groups and better more engaging education. With a appropriate opportunity to help if your a young person. I don’t know if you have it already ( perhaps a retired science teacher volunteer could create) but a natural tie in of lesson plans and a synopsis for the teachers would be cool. Also a tie in for young people volunteer opportunities would be a great project for a team of young people to work on as a school or college project that could be done for a grade.

Greetings from the forest of Biscay. If you dont quit the down part and the roots of the fallen tree it has no sense to plant a new one near it, where the roots start to rotten and will affect the development of the young one. You can also paint the base of the tree for ants and other animals to dont climb up ad remain healthy. Nice work dude we have to change this together. Jo ta ke, Irabazi arte.

There's still debate whether replanting or natural regrowth are better. A similar situation occurrred since the 1990s in the Bohemian forest, Bavarian Forest in Germany and adjacent, still bigger Šumava in Czechia. These areas still need time to recover, but they also had those spruce monocultures. Now it's increasingly mixing up with rowan, ash, beech, maple, fir. But it's still a rather barren landscape to the eye, just the dead trees have decayed meanwhile.

I went on a bike ride through the Harz last year and it was shocking to see all the dead trees since I always only knew it from my childhood and it looked so different, so green. Thank you for recovering the real, more resilient Harz forest.

The only thing, those dead trees were probably 30-40 years old. Older trees create more habitat that younger ones. It’s good that your replanting but it won’t be the same for a long time still

This is great. Spruce has its place in a forest, true. But not in monocultures, and it needs to be managed some places so it doesn't take over and push out other types of trees that can grow slower. Since spruce grow so fast, and create a lot of shade that kill other trees and plants on the forest floor. Mixed forests is the future.

Love this kind of work. Do you leave the dead trees or chip them. It costs a bit to buy wood chip in Australia..was free just a few years ago. Do you guys make swales or other kinds of water holding structures? Seeing as we are on the way to a warmer drier climate. I see this done in India. Building ponds ect to give moisture to plants. Some projects, the guys plant the trees and leave them to grow. Sadly they die as it's too dry now. Keep up the good work.

Though I really love the project, the whole point of a national park is to leave it as it is - dead trees and all. Let it take hundreds of years for it to adapt. That's nature taking its course. The dead, fallen trees should be left there as a reminder and valuable habitat for fingi and insects. Reforest everything around the national park first.

We totally agree that nature should be allowed to take its course. Our aim is to provide a helping hand to nature by undoing the processes that humans have initiated and accelerated, which have made it increasingly challenging for nature to function on its own. 💚 And we of course leave the dead trees in place. In fact, it's quite challenging to walk around the area, as there are so, so many. 😁 But, as you say, they have an important role in the ecosystem and therefore will stay where they are, providing a valuable habitat for fungi & insects, and protect saplings. 🌱

Well done Planet Wild!! :) Thank you for doing your research on polyculture vs monoculture prior to planting. How fortuitous to have all that decaying wood and standing snags. It should provide a fantastic food for saprophytic fungi and habitat for diverse species, including birds of prey. It should also increase your fungi-to-bacteria ratio significantly, which is usually a sign of a mature forest successional stage. Since this area was a monoculture for so long, please make sure to inoculate with relevant mycorrhizal species to facilitate the networking relationships necessary to support the forest, especially during times of drought and stress. There are water-soluble mycorrhizal spore mixtures which can be applied well after planting. All the best. Cheers.

Great work! Question: how will those new plantings survive the hotter weather we now have? I see other parts of the forest are not doing well because of the heat, so I wonder if the protected area will do any better.

It's important to plant trees which are more resilient. Also It's important to plant mixed trees, because they naturally are more resistant
