It's amazing to think that the last people to dig in that mine used hand tools - now it's being opened up using a machine that they couldn't have imagined in their wildest dreams. I love that contrast.

He could drain that water off, down the hillside.... trenching a channel away from the adit and down the hill rather than leaving it backed up that way in a pit. They found quartz... were they mining for gold? It was amazing that they knew exactly where to dig on the first try.

Fantastic work! I've dreamed of doing this for several promising mines I know of that are badly eroded shut, but you actually did it... It is a pretty amazing feeling to lay eyes on something that you know no other living human has seen. That was a good idea to let the mine breathe for a bit after being sealed up for that long. I've only dug open (by hand, not in a civilized manner like you) a couple of mines, but we let them sit for a week before going in because of possible air issues.

Hi Al and Ioan. I've been off KZbin for a little while now, but boy this is quite something to see! Your aspiration to discover these beautiful places is beyond me. Incredible work guys! Your passionate ambition reminds me of the Williamson Tunnels Trust in Liverpool, they are some interesting things, but I have to say, nothing can beat a coffin level for me! ⚰ ⛏ This is what Ioan does in his spare time, researches and explores these wonderful places, but never did I know that he also crouches in JCB buckets 😂 The views are just great in this part of Wales - it's lucky I know this area well, some very interesting things to see around here - always keep my eyes open for any possible dangers though whilst out exploring on walks! Keep up the great work lads! 😀 👍 Stay safe both, kind regards GWR

This is quite interesting. As well that my great-great-grandfather emigrated to the US from Wales in the late 1860s and was apparently a miner in his native land. He seems to have done some mining work in the Pennsylvania area before heading west to Kansas to help found a Welsh town there named Bala. I think a lot of the settlers there were also miners - there's a record of them hand digging a well for the new town, found a pocket of bad gas so started digging elsewhere and finished the next day.

Interesting, but it's actually quite risky simply clearing away debris in front of an adit. A long tongue of water might be underground and when it starts to move it can create a runaway situation where the velocity of released water washes all the obstructing material away. Safer to drain the water away with a siphon.
@LostMines
@LostMines 4 жыл бұрын
The water was actually flowing out down below the adit , there is an underground stream running through it, we just opened it up a bit more,

Was there any wind going in or out of the portal to indicate it was connected to other levels? If not it could be just a short prospect explore like the lower adit. Seeing quartz by the portal is a good sign though. --- I used to live in Northern California Gold Rush country and explored a lot of abandoned gold mines. My friends thought it was funny to get me drunk and turn me loose in one of their 4x4 vehicles. I guess I did alright... I never wrecked or got (too) stuck :>

Even if there is no air flow, it still has potential to be a good-sized mine. Given how old it is, ventilation shafts could easily have become plugged or eroded shut. Some of the big mines we have explored had no air flow anymore. And one of the biggest I explored had no air flow and no waste rock pile. I thought it was going to be just a little prospect running back for fifty feet or so.
@DFDuck55
@DFDuck55 4 жыл бұрын
@@TVRExploring: Good point. And the mines there are most all older than anything we have here, so more likely to be caved or eroded if it ever did connect to anything or have an air shaft.
