Very cool, lads... That's an amazing feeling to see those tools and such. I was surprised by how spacious the adit was given that all of that was done by hand. The waders are definitely a "must" for the wet mines. The "boom" you heard may have been some rock coming down. In the mines we have dug open, we noticed that a lot of material would come down after it was exposed to fresh air again after so long.

Amazing and well worth it! That view into the mouth of the mine with the tones and angles would be worthy of a picture! So the miners found a fault line, the smooth wall and followed it, hoping that minerals had seeped into the fault over millions of years and been deposited? Keep looking and showing the finds.

Even before you mentioned the lack of tallow candles I was thinking to myself that it was odd there were no tallow candles. You have to feel sorry for the poor minors. Lost their jobs, found a vein on their own, put all that time and work in trying to scratch out enough to feed their families, and came out empty handed.

@Randrew

Precisely what I was thinking as it became apparent that the vein they followed was barren. Amazing gumption to pool their meager resources to pursue their trade independently - to work that hard on speculation and then come up empty. There was a lot of Welsh emigration to the US after its Civil War ended, including my father's side of my family. I knew that my great-great-grandfather was probably a miner in Wales, but have had no clue why he moved besides "to make a better life." Now I think I'm starting to understand the economic climate for my gggf John (Ioan!) Thomas and his peers back in Wales. It's got to take strong reasons to leave such a beautiful country.

You say "foot wall of the load", in the US here that is a fault line miners followed looking for gold/silver. Is it just a translation thing and that is same? That is formed when earth moves up to surface and it smooths one side by pressure creating the fault. That pressure is what brings minerals up.
