Sounds like a 305 with wore out cam lobes those late 70's 305's were all the same way. you gotta put a 350 cam in it or just find something better to replace that junk engine with. LS Swap?

@@Rustomod buy a cheap rusted out Silverado with a good drivetrain an do some swappage. Maybe buy an old auction rusted out blazer 4x4 from old stock surplus. All in all if yer budget is 500 or less it can be done. I built a land boat 76 Chrysler Newport 4 door sedan into a wicked mechanical mindfucker. An I got the car body fer free, an built it with free an swapped parts with friends to build this bitch into what she is. Torque beats horsepower in my book. If I can pull a heavy equipment trailer with an overweight hearse on it down the road an keep up with traffic like she already do, I'm happy. Point is however, ya don't necessarily need money to build a bad ass beater eater from hell, I did it 90% free. Only thing I've paid fer is the tires on my 15 inch front tires, and deep dish 17s on the rear. Front lowered by 2" and the rears been raised by 1. You would think it wouldn't make much difference, but I have to use wide wing mirrors on a sedan. I caint see over my trunk lid! But I love my Frankenfreak.

I will tell you right now that engine will not run good without digging into the engine you can hear it not running on all 8 the timing and carb is not going to help that POS
