You are doing a fantastic job not only clearing the road way but protecting your farm against fire. Why the Portuguese government do not incentive farmers to cut down the broom and eucalyptus to protect the farmland x congratulations to you both for showing others what they can achieve through hard work and determination xxx wishing you all the best in 2025 xxx you really are a lovely couple xxx

The Portuguese government, in addition to providing incentives, even fines those who do not clean their land.

Thank you! We have so much broom unfortunately but great to finally feel like we are making a dent in it, it's our biggest worry come fire season. Wishing you the best for the year ahead too 😊💚💚

What a fantastic job clearing all those bushes and it’s so satisfying when you achieve something so good like that. That will reduce your fire hazard when summer comes and that’s so important. It’s great you have another road into your property. All those great boulders/rocks you have exposed are so good. Working hard always pays off.😀

It really is so satisfying 😌 you're so right, great when jobs have multi purposes. Still a good amount of broom to clear for the fires but we will get there! Little by little 💚

Absolutely, unfortunately we have so much of it but great to make a proper dent in clearing it! 😊
@TheJimcrooks80014 күн бұрын
Huge amount of work and so Glad to see the road emerging as you cut down the acres of broom! That will also help as a fire break in summer if you get summer fires. Getting chips to spread on the road (and a barrier mat underneath) will give you a long-lasting road but I'm afraid the cutting back of broom will be a perpetual job! It will pay dividends however as you beautify the land, then fence it and then have goats, sheep and a cow! Maybe even ducks if you can provide a small pond for them! Maybe our dreams and imagination are bigger than is necessary but you inspire us!
@BaileysHomestead12 күн бұрын
Ah we are so in agreement of your vision! Definitely excited to get some more animals to assist with land management and just to add more spirit to the place, ducks and goats are next on the list 💚 And yes important to cut down the flammable broom and gorse bushes for fire safety

Great work both of you - as veterans of undergrowth clearance we know how relentless that task is but the rewards are well worth it. You have more broom than us (mostly ivy, bracken and brambles) so well done on clearing and burning it safely now, it's one thing less to worry about later in the year. Happy new year, keep smiling and take care....P&J
@BaileysHomestead12 күн бұрын
It does feel never-ending but we will get there! Everybody does seem to have an invasive species of some sort, we have a giant bramble problem too in other areas, spend most of our days fighting them! Wishing you both the best for 2025 💚

Be careful…. All your hard work is showing!!! Is chipping an option for you guys? Also, I was wondering if you have to get a burn permit? Thanks for posting.
@BaileysHomestead12 күн бұрын
We currently don't have a chipper, our main problems are brambles, gorse and broom and I'm not sure how they would chip? We do need to get a burn permit each time, but it's a fairly simple process at this time of year 😊
@dmg102912 күн бұрын
@ same here for permit. We did get a chipper and use it frequently. If you do get one, get a large chipper.

Your land is looking beautiful & getting rid of broom is a good decision also my opinion would be get rid of pine as it burns so easily & try to plant some oaks would be beautiful, & safer against fires, my opinion not trying to tell you what to do. The stones along your road are awesome.
@BaileysHomestead12 күн бұрын
Thank you! For now we are getting rid of all the broom and gorse, of which there is a lotttt. Can decide on the pines later, we should have quite a few little oaks to transplant from in and around the forest area 😀 💚

If you want to take pines down its okay because those trees are not part of native flora, but never do that to oaks, those should never be taken down.

Good job removing all that broom, not many oak trees on your property? I have read that it is against the law to cut down any oak trees in Portugal, could you confirm if that is true or not?
@BaileysHomestead12 күн бұрын
We have lots of oak trees, just not in this area. Half of our land is forested and its predominantly oak which is so lovely 😊 I believe this is the case with cork oaks, an important tree for Portugal
