gear oil. something we do with the racecars when the transmission starts to fail is we drain the oil from the pan and fill it back up with the thickest gear oil that we can get. i don't know the long term effects of doing this on a road vehicle, but i'm telling you that it'll turn a car that can barely move into something that drives. and honestly, if the transmission is shot anyway then there's nothing to lose. i'm used to dealing with transmissions that have worn clutches, not ones that have broken planetary gears. there's a big difference. if you're transmission is slipping because you lost your friction material then thicker oil WILL make it work.

I have this same transmission in my RX300. It grenaded/shredded itself, because of the planetary gear. Mine was much, much worse. I had to buy new planetary sets because the others were in terrible shape. I welded the main planetary pins so they will never come loose. It's a known issue on the U140. You are very lucky this did not do the same as mine. I rebuilt mine as well, and it runs like it's brand new now. They are actually good transmissions besides that one defect. They're on U740's now after many changes. These are supposed to use Toyota transmission fluid, and not dexron. I don't know what the difference is, but I try to stick with OEM. That pack that was barely used is actually the second gear clutch pack that also engages reverse. In second gear, it just activates on. In reverse, I think the first gear pack engages, along with the second to get the planetary gear train to run in reverse. I also rebuilt a new valve body with a kit because I was having troubles with second gear. Until I later realized I had 2 of the C rings swapped, so second gear was never engaging properly. Once I fixed that, everything is working amazingly well.

The other clutch pack the one that engages reverse is known as the direct clutch. The reason it would have been better than the others is because that pack is only used in reverse and overdrive (your "last gear"). Naturally it's not as worn, although if you tow/haul a lot and don't use the O/D Off switch on the dash that pack will easily burn up since it's not designed for high loads. My theory for why the higher viscosity oil didn't engage reverse would probably have been moving quickly enough to actuate the direct clutch piston, due to the small passages?? Where the lower would have the opposite effect and not enough pressure 🤔

Hey, that car has the Aisin U140 model automatic transmission, what happened to the planatary gear for that pin and gear to come loose like that, there was insufficient lubrication, the rollers that allow that small gear to spin around the pin got locked up..that is it did not work as a bearing any more, being locked up and forcing the car to move results in the mechanism that holds that pin in place being destroyed and the pin comming loose...the first clutch pack shown that burnt up is the one located in the drum behind the transmission pump, it uses plastic/nylon square cut profile seals, these fail, clutch pack looses pressure and results it overheated clutch pack...the same for the other overheated clutch pack..that us located on the transmission side cover, it also uses the same design square profile plastic/nylon seals, these fail, results in pressure loss and overheated clutches...a proper test would have been with a transmission assembled with metal sealing rings instead of those plastic/nylon seal rings and a good planatary assembly, also the transmission filter from the factory is a stainless steel mesh, it is recommended to clean it with every fluid change/ experiment....
@trm4life

I over filled the transmission on my 96 sentra once. Found out of you put it in neutral and Rev the engine, it would move forward! Totally took out the excess fluid immediately. So perhaps just filling it over full may have helped the car move, not necessarily just using thicker fluid?

You should connect two gearboxes, sequentially. No need for a second clutch, just direct link, like a transfer case. Mitsubishi did that twin-stick manual thing in the 80's with the two speed splitter behind a four speed manual, offering eight forward speeds and two reverses, so depending on if you use two four speed 1/1 ratio final drive units, or two five-speed overdrive units, you'd have a couple of different variables. Two four speeds would, effectively, be 17 forward gears, and four reverse gears, You'd have four forward speeds lower than the original first gear, and reverse ratios, for advanced crawling, you'd have a mystery gear, when you put both transmissions into reverse, but you'd have the same final drive ratio. Two five speeds, you'd have 26 forward speeds, five reverse speeds + 1L/RL crawl ratios and the addition of double overdrive, which might increase top speed, if it doesn't lug the engine too much. Probably only a semi truck would have that beat, even Porsche only has a seven speed manual.

A wild guess, the click click was the tiny parking sprawl skipping over its notch. Most people don't realize in most transmissions the so called "parking gear" is a thin 1 or two inch wide tab that slips into a small slot just as small and thin. That's why you never put it in park without engaging brake. Proper parking procedure Place car in neutral Pull/push emergency brake Let off brake and let the emergency brake catch the car. Then place into park. Always avoid putting into park and letting it roll. A parking gear is not a gear nor is it safe.

And that was after the ATF had leaked out, and the 5w30 that I put in after, and the coolant after the oil leaked out... It never actually failed. I ran out of fluids. If I had pond water I would have tried that. Haha

Hey! That's really quite surprising. Yours is quite a modern town with regular looking shops and up-to-date cars... not a sign of ageing Ladas at all? Though what was that Pink car on the other side of the flooded junction where you turned left?? Suspiciously box-like. Lada-esque? However, some of your minor roads are in an appalling state! Garages must be on overtime replacing broken suspension springs and D-shaped wheels 😞

Possible video idea for you guys. I've always wondered what it would be like to have the radiator inside the car to heat the interior in the winter. When it's super cold, I'd sure like to have a blast of heat like that to keep the windows clear.

What do you think a car heater is? It's a miniature radiator dumping heat into the interior.
@peterjohnson9438
@peterjohnson9438 Жыл бұрын
It's called the heater core. It's a small radiator connected to the engine cooling loop, on a separate circuit from the one that goes through the radiator thermostat. Instead, the heat knob in your car controls a valve that determines how much coolant flows through it. It sits behind dash, all the ventilation air is pushed through it. Fun fact: it can be used to cool down your engine if you turn the heat up to max and open the windows.
