Note: We did ask for upgrade options once we sailed away, but prior to any knowledge of our neighbors behavior. Unfortunately, the ship was sold out and guest services said there were no rooms available to change to. Who knows if one would have magically appeared if we would have gone back with valid complaints of our neighbors, but our fear was that we would be stuck in our same room with escalating neighbors due to the sold out ship. Working in HR, I would have been down to guest services with the first incident asking to be placed elsewhere for safety concerns. Not sure where you departed from but I have utilized the Passenger Vessel Act before and ended a cruise early (the cruise departed from LA and I left the ship in PV, Mexico). Please consider this: those people have likely exhibited rude behaviour before. If they had previously cruised with RCL the cruise line might already have a file on them from past reports, needing just one more to take action. If others in your situation took the same approach to wait it out and not inform guest services, then with these individuals, there would be no documentation on file about past incidents and these two would feel empowered to continue with the same type of behaviour on future cruises (if they take another and with the same cruise line). Because you stated they they rarely left the room you could have had guest services discretely send a security agent to your room to be witness to the activity and then they could have taken action, even it it was to find you another inside cabin. There are a lot of other factors that I would not know as I was not there, but connecting door or not, you both deserved to enjoy your cruise without having to walk on eggshells each time you were in your room. There would be no way that I would do seven days with that next to me; I would ask that a bed be made up in a life boat first or I would be invoking that Act again, even though it would be at a cost to me.

Firstly, It is not Okay to be that disrespectful to others around them. Third and lastly, With the sound of what responses you were getting through the walls, you actually put yourself in the way of harm by not reporting it immediately and being placed in a safer location. The first time you realized the walls were paper thin and you could hear everything through them, why didn't you knock on their door and tell them that the walls are so thin that you could hear their conversation and make the construction of the ship be the common enemy. I thought my cruise neighbors, were the worst, after travelling on a brand new Carnival ship. The cabin was large and beautiful, but.the 5 cabins above us, all had their balconies opened, so they could use their balconies to party. They were a group of old, swingers, who enjoyed their cigarettes, and pot. They’d start partying about 1:30am, on their balconies, every night. We could hear every word they said, and every lewd act. We heard no noise from the hall, but every word from their balconies. Complaining didn’t help. We are non drinkers and were given 4 bottles of wine.. The smoke was so bad, at all hours, that we couldn’t enjoy our deck. Day three, we made our 2nd complaint, and asked to be moved. We were told the pot smokers, better finish their pot, before returning to the US, and us tea totalers, were given drink vouchers to keep us drunk for the rest of the cruise. The captain brought the vouchers himself, and threatened to kick us off the ship, if we complained again.He said the ship was full, so we couldn’t be moved, to any class of cabin, and that the swingers above us, made a “special” booking, so their balconies would remain open. Day 4 my husband developed pneumonia, and couldn’t leave the room, so the noise and smoke were a big problem. The only thing we took the captain up on, was VIP debarkation. We were first off the ship, and our luggage was in a VIP area, so we could grab it and go. We were so grateful to be off the ship, and haven’t cruised since.

Lots of cruise news stories on YT this week addressing guest discontentment across multiple cruise lines. It seems like cruising these days is like staying in a very small hotel room inside a shopping mall. NO, thank you.
@Voorhees-Jason9 ай бұрын
I think it is because cruise lines is getting more noticed as a vacation idea. Before cruising had this trope about it that it is for old people and such. When in fact it is for all ages. Because of social media and such, it shows it can be for anyone. The downside to that is the demand. So cruiselines are building more ships. they making it more and more affordable because of the different cabin options. The cruiselines are always offer deals like, 50% off of deposits, lower cost deals, have it all deals, etc..... This draws more and more people. Also he was on one of the biggest ships in the world which holds thousands of passengers which means more people a lot more people then an average ship. This is why I cruise on Holland America or Princess because of the higher price which means it filters out some people like described in the video. Does it get rid of them entirely? No. It does at least limit them. This is one reason why I will not go on a straight carnival ship itself. Yes I know Princess and Holland is owned by Carnival but, thank god Carnival still keep them carved out to cater to the cruisers they target. The Carnival ships are generally more affordable and attract a lot of younger party type cruisers for example. This ups the chances of getting cruisers like described in the video. I know people have different budgets and we should all be able to enjoy ourself no matter what your budget you have for what cruise ship. Sad truth when something is less they tend to have less respect for the value it is.

They didn’t know that my boys would have been the best neighbors ever. They would have had get together BBQs and would watch a neighbors dog or keep an eye on their home if they were gone. They would have helped out in any way if a neighbor had an illness or surgery. Boy, did they miss out on some great people.

I agree with report the issue and request a room change. Even if they can't/won't accommodate a move, you will have reported the issue in case it escalates.

I am so sad to hear this happened to the both of you. I understand the reticence you had to not report them to Guest Services. It’s easy to tell you now that when you heard the man’s violent response in this instance, it really might have been the prudent thing to do. Basically you were being held “hostage” in your own room and being subjected to “abuse” by them blaring their TV disturbing the enjoyment you could have gotten out of the cruise. I think you both are putting a brave face on when you both share your stories, but no one can understand the real fear you face when you come up against these type of people given you married status. I’m glad you have each other to help each other through these AWFUL scenario’s. It’s admirable that you two decided to take the “higher ground”, but these people were out of control and should have been removed from their cabin and escorted to the gangplank where they could go home where they could no longer make anyone, who paid good money for a cruise, have to look both ways before entering or exiting their own cabin. I hope you can recover from this incident in due course and get back on your next ship knowing that there are still nice people who care for each of you for the fun, loving, and caring people you are!❤

We had nightmare neighbors in a balcony cabin. We also have cruised 50+ times and did not encounter anything like this in any other cabin types (including inside cabins). Yes, we have had balcony smokers and pot use (makes me very nauseated and I couldn't use our balcony) but we never call about those things. Our last cruise was our nightmare situation. The neighbors were very loud and it seemed like they were in our cabin with us. (not a connecting cabin) They also had very loud sexy time multiple times a day at all hours. 1st of all, good for them for enjoying their cruise, but not appropriate to be so over the top in volume in a public situation. We tried some subtle hints such as talking a little louder so they could hear how thin the walls were. I sent a kind, discreet note under their door just to say that the walls were very thin and we hoped that we weren't disturbing them as I am sure that they noticed we can hear each other very clearly through the wall. That night and the following 4 nights they were louder than ever and had friends in their cabin at 2am and they loudly stated that they were apparently disturbing people with their "enthusiasm". On day 6 of our 7 day cruise my husband finally went to guest services to plead for an intervention or a room change- we were not able to sleep! They told us that unless we called while they were engaged in the noise they couldn't speak to them. He then asked if we could change cabins, even an inside cabin would be fine. They did move us and we had 1 good night. I wish we had done that sooner.

I understand the instinct to get authorities involved but it can also escalate. If you were to say anything, I would do that after the last night and before disembarking. If these people are violent, getting confronted about this might set them off and I would hate for anything to happen to someone who is trying to do the right thing. It’s a tough situation. What an awful thing to have to deal with.

Unfortunately, this type of behavior has becoming more and more prevalent on cruise ships. The "It's my vacation. I can do what I want." excuse comes out. Ridiculous!

You have the right to safety and privacy in your stateroom. I know that deciding to report an issue like this is a hard decision to make in the moment, but I believe that you should have made a report. It's not "complaining", it's reporting an issue that detracts from your experience and sense of security. Also, I don't think that it's too late to report your experience, in writing, to the cruise line. I'm so sorry that this happened! I'm sure that you've discussed a plan of action should something similar happen again. Best wishes!

The last cruise I went on, our neighbor was loud , but entertaining. It was like listening to a soap opera. 😂😂
@DK-co6ou9 ай бұрын
You should have definitely called guest services and/or security immediately when the problem started. Every cruise passenger who paid for their cruise should NEVER allow another passenger to spoil their trip just because they’re disrespectful of other passengers. People that think they can do or say whatever they want and whenever they want when it affects other people need to called on it immediately. Don’t ever let bad behaviour go unchecked, especially when it affects you.
@andariegos94667 ай бұрын
We would record a couple of different instances of the loudness and rude behavior. Then we’d go to guest services so they’d have proof of the disturbances. Even though we have a guaranteed cabin we’re still paying customers. So either speak to the people to be more mindful of their surrounding neighbors or move us. At that point it’s Royal’s duty to handle the situation before it escalates.

We went on the Celebration last year and had a balcony cabin, but every time I would go out to sit and get some fresh air, there would be the smell of weed. Someone complained because a bank of cabins (including us) got a letter that there was a complaint and so on, but it continued. Almost every day. It made me rethink cruising and getting a balcony.
@JJCruise9 ай бұрын
We’ve had a similar situation except our time, they actually thought it was us and threatened us with a warning (neither of us smoke). We told guest services that neither of us smoke or have any smoking paraphernalia (whether cigarettes, cigars or other) and they were super nice with their apologies saying someone nearby swore it was our cabin. We are glad they take it seriously initially, but sounds like they never caught the person on our ship either. 😌
@jayward82379 ай бұрын
We also had that happened & it was a strong smell of weed. 4 days into the cruise we saw our smoking neighbor being escorted off the ship by security when we reached port.
@traveler320ak79 ай бұрын
I have noticed lots of smoking on the balcony’s recently. I’m not getting a balcony for awhile. I’m going to get ocean view instead.
@jtb81559 ай бұрын
I wish our neighbors had been escorted off the ship. We asked to be moved, and were told we’d be kicked off the ship if we complained again. Yeah Carnival. The offenders were over 70.
@tonyintrevado89609 ай бұрын
Yes, had similar experience on MSC last fall. Both sides smoking something! Again poor enforcement by cruise lines focusing on $.
@bew44649 ай бұрын
Had a similar terrible experience many years ago on the Allure of the Seas. Thought we were getting a deal. NOT!! Got a surprise upgrade from an Ocean View to a Balcony. Well it was to a connecting cabin balcony. The girl next door kept complaining on the phone to what sounded like friends, loudly and started slamming her door purposely every time she entered and exited. It got so bad we had to call the front to complain about the door slamming. The front desk did put a stop to it. Will never accept an upgrade before knowing were we are moved and will never book a connecting cabin next to unknown guests.

Vacation for me is about zero drama, so I would have done what you both did and stayed out of my stateroom as much as possible and wear my earplugs when I sleep.
@ladonnabrummitt25708 ай бұрын
If you complain to guest services they send security to their room and say you complained. I cruise solo so the last thing I want is a neighbor to make life hard for me.
@jasonward8089 ай бұрын
Not sure if Guest Services would be in a position, at that point in the journey, to intervene in a positive way. I share your sentiment that it could likely inflame the unpleasant neighbors even further and escalate. Sadly, there aren't great options for this and it doesn't seem like they did anything illegal at that point so tough call. What options do management have if that excursion is full and moving isn't an option? onboard credits are a bandaid that serves only to pacify some. I don't think I would be very pleasant with these travelers if I were in your predicament.

the problem with the noise now concerns me abit about our upcoming cruise next month, we did get to pick our cabin and i didnt realise till later that i had picked a connecting cabin. i talk reasonably loud, but its something i cannot help. after damage to my larynx by a partner. so its really hard for me to whisper or talk softely. id hate to be one of those annoying neighbours where the people next to us can hear every word im saying. so hoping that that doesnt happen. ill try to be mindfull of the people next door to us :)

Man, I am so sorry this happened to you guys. If they were that loud, I would have recorded them on my phone AND I would have gone to guest services too. I wonder if their neightbors on their OTHER side would have also been getting an earful too. Terrible, scary stuff.

For your story, you should say if the cruise was at full occupancy. I'm hearing that a lot of cruises are full occupancy now. Everyone seems to think it's so easy to get a room changed. They would probably only change if there was something wrong with the cabin, such as a leak or A/C that didn't work.
@cruiseandthemeparkguide9 ай бұрын
Thank you for making this video! I support you guys 100% and would have reacted the same way if I encountered someone like that!
@XanderPearl9 ай бұрын
This is really tricky. I wish you could have contacted cruise management discretely and gotten a room change. This couple was so hostile and potentially dangerous that I understand your hesitation. Especially if you were “outed”. I myself would have seen if a discrete room change was possible. If not, I am not sure what I would have done. I don’t think I could have stayed there given the noise and hostility. But that is me. I think you guys did your best to navigate the situation. So sorry that you had to endure this.

We once had a connecting room on Independence of the Seas ~ Just the worst! That said, we were rarely in our room so it worked out. In your case, should it happen again, I might go to Guest Services as soon as there is a problem. They’ll have a record of the issue AND God Forbid, if the Neighbor’s start getting crazy, they’ll have a “paper trail”. Also, you never know, they might have moved your cabin bc of your loyalty.

I would have called GS even if it was just so they could see how they needed to add more sound proofing.

Hey Jared, I am sorry to hear about your experience. I thought about this situation and I would have asked to change stateroom from day 2. You guys had a bad experience when you were in your stateroom which is not fair to you. It's easy for me to say after the fact. You are too nice to the rude people next door. But make sure to have a good experience as well. It would be an honor to have you as a cruise neighbor. 🙂 Hopefully one day that will happen.
@CruisingWithChooChoo9 ай бұрын
Wow! What a terrible experience!! I think I would inform guest services and asked to be moved to another stateroom. Even though it was only a 7 night cruise that’s still a long time to tolerate these obnoxious neighbours.
@charlottephillips41739 ай бұрын
I think I would have done the same they would know it was you who had said something and they sound as though they would have taken it out on you. The problem is it would be your word against theirs and unless you had a recording of what was said nothing would happen. You did the right thing
@kathycoutinho56659 ай бұрын
I would have recorded the ranting and then asked guest service if a move was possible. If not then I would have just done as much to avoid them as possible. I also would have been making my phone calls in the bathroom. I think in the long run what you did was the best option. People that are that unstable are dangerous and there's nothing wrong with walking away from a confrontation.
@lhvent9 ай бұрын
You can't have that. Totally unacceptable.
@teresah53188 ай бұрын
I most likely would have reported it after day 2. What cruisers need to remember is that the cabin walls are not that thick. Heck, I was getting woken up by our neighbor's coughing because it was so loud. I just felt sorry for them. Your neighbors were stating violent talking and I would have reported it that you overheard this, and it made you feel uncomfortable, not to mention their rudeness with the stupid tv. Worse scenario, nothing happens? Thanks for sharing!!
