What a recovery! I just came to see the disaster. As an overlander I also had such experiences. That's why they say: "A 4x4 without Lockers is only half a 4x4". Besides Recovery boards the first thing I would upgrade are front and rear lockers. They can really safe your ass. If one side looses traction the power goes the way of least resistance. Wheels without traction are spinning and where you have traction nothing moves. Believe me, it's a great investment.

Hi, I really enjoy the channel and great idea in building yourselves a path out. A lot of people say winch and lockers, and those do help tremendously so im not knocking them, but in the meantime until those become a reality you have what you have. Something you could have done since the rocks were sliding is dig a hole and bury your spare tire so that you have something to anchor to. I have done this many times and the jack will fail before the tire drags. Just be sure to also dig a channel for your tow rope/cable so the force is being pulled into the dirt instead of up out of the hole.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think both winch or lockers would have made everything smoother. 100%. But, like you say, we gotta work with what we've got. 😜 It think burying the tire would have been a lot of work and we still were not sure if the high lift would hold the Landy, so that's why we decided for the road builder approach 😆

5:44 I see that everything was covered by snow, there was no way of tell which was the best line. A beautiful place to get stuck. All along I thought that landrovers had the option to lock the dif. Was funny how you were trying to prevent wheel spin with ropes. A front, center and rear lock is a dream feature.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Hey Nicolas, in Diet the conditions were difficult, and with a lot of slushy snow on the left I was not sure how far left I could go… Defender come as a standard with central diff lock and reduction, which in combination with great axle movement makes them great 4x4s. I'd love to have a diff-lock in the rear axle but it was always a bit too expensive and I didn't see enough justification for it. As soon as the rear diff needs replacement I'll put in either a Detroit locker or an air locker.

Great fun video. Hard work but you will always think back about this situation as fun. There is always a way to anchor a winch, even burying the jack or something horizontal in a dug trench. I would have high-lifted the back right to get the tire completely off the ground and piled rocks under the tire and behind to make more even traction, out of the rut you created. Saves all that digging. Maybe also lift the front right the same process. I admire you in your travels. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for watching! We tried lifting the car with the high lift, like we have done many other times. You can see Kai doing it, but it was extremely dangerous as the high lift was sinking in the mud! No chance to do it safely for us or the Landy.
@leeloo212312349 ай бұрын
Nice work getting out. I see you realised like I did( learned the hard way as well ), better to work with gravity when possible, than against it . Winch helps in some situations, but with means to lift the car, shovel. and recovery boards. you can get out most things except river crossings... A locker is a very good thing to have, at least a rear one. And since you are crafty engineer, you can do the install yourself. You already have on board air. That is half of the expense already. I would consider more a locker, no extra weight or space in the car, and 2 more sand boards.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Yes! Sometimes is better to retrieve 🙌 the winch is necessary in very specific occasions and it's always better to master other ways of recovery to don't over depend on it. We consider a locker in the back but a Detroit locker. Regarding the air lockers, even though we have air on board, we have learnt it is very difficult sometimes to build enough high pressure when we are in high altitude (4000m over sea level) and then it's not that reliable anymore. But yeah, most probably something we might consider before getting a winch.

I'm with Kai. Instead of a winch I'd get some chains and new tires if yours have no tread left - maybe even MTs. Oh, and adjusting the tire pressure before it's too late also might help to prevent these kinda situations 🙃 ...if you still want to spend some coin, get diff lockers.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Yes! We have chains back in Germany! For snow it's the best for sure, but fore the trip it was way too much considering most of the time we would drive during summer months. Our tread is basically nearly 0 haha, we are pushing our BFGs to the limit as we want to finish the trip and then buy knew in Europe. We had MTs and we sold them after some months because they were TERRIBLE in snow. We had a very scary moment coming down a mountain in France and 0 grip before a corner. That was the moment we decided to sell them. For mud, they are the best. In snow sometimes higher pressure helps, depends the consistency of it. And diff locks, yeah we are considering in the future a Detroit locker. Thank you for your comment!!

I have a winch fitted to my 300Tdi and it's great when needed, you do use it when you have one, to help others most of the time, however, it is 30Kg of your payload which could maybe be used better elsewhere if only needed twice in so many years travel. The other issue is because you have a winch fitted you may be tempted to tackle a route you would otherwise avoid & get into deeper trouble, it's a hard one but a longer rope or more straps & a Tirfor hand winch is a very versatile unit and good idea. Admire your calm approach to a crisis, not making it any worse is a great ethos.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Yes! The extra payload is something to consider as well as the $$ for the winch and a new bumper. For the moment it was not worth it. I hope you don't misunderstand this!!! Despite the fact that you worked together brilliantly and showed a lot of patience, I cannot understand why, after almost sinking your Defender, you still haven't refitted a winch. Perhaps because I competed in off-road competitions for over 10 years, before I discovered my passion for overland travel with my 110 Defender. I cannot understand why many overlanders do without a winch, especially as they are usually on the road alone and with heavily loaded vehicles . But it looks like you've learned your lesson this time. Winch and plasma rope are simply a must, especially if, like you, you like to travel “off the beaten track”. In theory, you could have “winched yourself out” with your high lift, but to do that you would have needed the additional kit - a set of chains that would have turned your high lift into a kind of cable pull. But without a point to securely attach the high lift, you wouldn't have gotten much further, even with this kit. An additional equipment, whether with a winch or a cable pull, that might be of use in a situation like yours, could be an „earth-anchor. Here I recommend that you look for forestry supplies. There are variants that are heavy, but take up relatively little space. Simply described, these are 2 or 3 solid flat irons that are connected at one end and can be folded apart in a V shape. A shackle and a winch rope or similar can also be attached to an eyelet there. The flat irons usually have 3 holes each through which approx. 1-1.5 cm thick and 50-70 cm long „steel nails“ can be driven into the ground... Even a simple V-shape with 6 steel rods, in fairly solid ground is sufficient for your Defender. Another accessory for your high lift could also make sense. Two massive hooks are attached to the high-lift, which can be hooked into the holes in the rim. This means you can lift the axle directly and not just the frame or body. so you can e.g. easily raise a wheel so far, that you can put a recovery board underneath it and get out of a hole or ditch, without much shovelling work. Should you ever have to get yourself out of an awkward situation backwards, take a look at the recovery set from „Bog Out“, which is “wound” over a wheel, like a snow chain and then winds up on the tire, which means you can, so to speak, a la Munchausen, pull yourself out of the mud by your own braid. However, this only works, if the wheel used, is also rotating. OK, enough “smart shit”, I hope my tips help you! keep it up!
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
No worries! We agree with your points! They make sense for some and it's important to consider them. For us we struggle so much with space in the Landy, that there is no way we would be able to transport an earth anchor or similar around the world. We know that with additional kits we would be out a lot faster than in this example, but Overlanding in our understanding is also working with what you have. Regarding the winch, the space would not be an issue. But as you mention without a proper anchor or similar in this case it would be useless. We might get one winch in the future, but for this trip the $$ and the extra weight for winch+bumper seemed not to be justified. Thank you for following along and leaving some" smart shit" in the comments, we really appreciate it 🤗❤️

If your going to be bogged somewhere, there is a good a place as any. you can buy or make a ground anchor similar to a boat anchor that you dig into the ground and winch with your high lift jack. you could also burry the spare wheel and place a bar or log behind the wheel and winch off that. in that case going backwards first would have saved alot of time but life is an adventure and you sucedded so well done and happy trails.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
A winch would have made everything a lot smoother, no doubt. Regarding going backwards, we could do it only creating a platform, and that meant hours of work , we thought very naively we could avoid. Without platform the risk was way to big of getting stuck further down in the snow channel. And then no way to get out by ourselves 😭

It's good to dig out under the vehicle before letting air out of the tires because you will have much more ground clearance to get the shovel under there. Your dedication to camera work is amazing I can't wait to watch more! I also would recommend v-bar tire chains, you can carry 2 or 4 but I always start with only chaining up whichever wheel is spinning and that is usually enough. Just make sure you have enough tire clearance if you want to use tire chains.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Hey thank you so much! Glad you enjoy the videos! We have really heavy duty chains, but they weigh 30kg a pair and are quite bulky. Therefore we didn’t want to drive them around with us for two years. Where we only had maybe 5 days with enough snow to use chains.
@CanadianSledDog8 ай бұрын
@@Thebluelandy I've had big truck chains in my 4Runner for many years now, only used them a couple times, I actually don't need them for deep snow so I reserve them for recovery, but there was one time when the mountains just turned to ice while I was camping up there, I don't know if I would've made it back down safely without them. They make a good counterweight anyway since me and the dogs all ride on the driver's side. And they're lighter than a winch, especially with a winch bumper, easier to install, and probably safer to use.

The weird noise was the fuel pump. It had been at that angle with little fuel for a while, once you got the car level it stopped as the fuel was back covering the bottom of the pump.

Maybe some MaxTrax too which are compact than that huge thing you were using. Quite the ditch you drove into lol Glad you had a third helping hand. I have crawl control on my Landcruiser and both front and rear ARB lockers in addition to the central factory diff lock and usually gotten out of some tough spots. Not a lot of power on that TD5. I would be surprised if it clocks 50% of the 130 hp on the dynamometer.

We made a new picnic area with great views 😅🙈 never had one, still not getting one (for now). We like our Sandboards,they allow creating a bridge in case of a broken path. And we don't think the max Trax are better at all. Also ours double as outdoor table(we use it every day) so we literally are not adding extra gear weight for that. Being three helped being faster and having a more controlled recovery. We always got our way with the central diff only, but agree in some specific cases, like here, could have helped. The Landy is getting close to 300.000 km ,and is way below the 122hp 😭.
@RogerTecumseh9 ай бұрын
In this terrain, even a very experienced off-road driver might have made a driving mistake and slipped. You freed yourselves according to the principle of "Learning by doing." 🙂 So, it must have been clear to you from the beginning that neither you nor the Landy was in danger; it was a matter of time, a lot of energy, and teamwork! (Proof: Camera and microphone were always there, nerves remained steady.) Bravo! And teamwork really means a lot here: an unwavering stoic, a communicative quicksilver temperament, and a calm helper! 😇 Winches? Here, they would have only saved time in conjunction with a very stable (!) earth anchor (Erdanker); and that's heavy, needs space. Two additional Sand-plates bring more in many situations. And above all: the only right decision - not to force forward, but humbly retreat! 😇
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Absolutely spot on. It was really slippery and until that moment we had half of the Landy on the edge without snow, so we could always have grip. In this part, it was the first without it, and we slid all the way from the center to the side. As we tried several times to push forward we slid even more. The smart way would have been to don't try again, but put the Sandboards immediately then and try to get through the part, but it's always this eagerness and overconfidence, which makes you decide to "it's just ok I guess ." Regarding the other point, yes,we didn't see danger as we knew about the weather and we had enough food and water to stay there for a while. Or biggest concern was that the car could tip over to the side, in that case we would not be able to get it our alone. The idea of putting the camera came from last time. I wanted to find a way of capturing it, but not prioritizing it, and that's why the steady camera on tripod was the way to go. And yes, at this point, we know each other very well and know how to work everybody's strength to get out of it. 😎 Thank you for your comment, it was as I said absolutely spot on. See you around ! 😊

@andrewsnow73868 ай бұрын
Nicely done! But, of course, I have suggestions. 🙄 First, you might want to consider having small pieces of metal welded to the bottom of the bumpers at each end. This would let you use your jack at the very end of the bumper without the jack slipping off the end of the bumper. Second, when you are in a position like at 32:30, you can move the back (or front) end sideways with the jack. To do this, put the jack at the center of the rear bumper and lift the back of the vehicle up as high as possible (you probably need the rear door open to get the tire/tire carrier out of the way). Then push the back of the vehicle sideways off the jack (make sure the jack and jack handle won't hit anything -- like the open door -- when the jack tips and slides). This will likely move the rear over 20 to 50 cm at a time. Note, having a couple of small pieces of steel welded to the bottom of the bumper 30 mm each side of the center will keep the jack from sliding on the bumper as you push the vehicle sideways. This will help move the vehicle farther as it falls.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Hey Andrew, I see your information and thanks for the hints! We tried using the jack but the ground was too soft to support the weight of the car, the jack was only moving down 😂 We have an adapter to use the hi-lift with original jack points (round hols below the front bumper, and at the rear cross member) there the jack sits pretty secure. I know what you mean with moving the car sideways. I tried that for fun while changing tires. In that situation it would not work, cause of the soft ground and the car was tilled too much and is way to heavy to move it, but that technique works great if you have just a hole or a Rock you need to avoid.
@andrewsnow73868 ай бұрын
@@Thebluelandy Thanks for the reply. If it comes up in the future, you might be able to use the spare tire under the jack to keep it from sinking.

Yes, indeed, a winch would have been a very helpful recovery tool (a cheaper version is the hi lift or farm jack plus a winch extension rope/strap which could reach the big rock/boulder and back to the Landy plus a snatch block or recovery ring - if the rock was heavy enough and lots of elbow grease to operate the hi lift winch recovery!). At least you did lots of shoveling which is an excellent recovery tool! And....you recovered the Landy!

Becareful with the caribiner you used for the hi-lift hack (13:45), those carebiners are made for climbing, not for recovering a heavy Land Rover, you should be using a D-Shackle. Great video over all.
@Thebluelandy8 ай бұрын
Yeah...we know that the carabiner doesn't hold the whole weight of our Landy, as long as the carabiner functions ok, it can be used. With the high lift and the rope you don't apply enough force to be able to break it anyway. The safest thing is to use soft shackles, but we only have two 🤷 thank for watching and commenting!

Amazing that the little terrace held up - congratulations! I know from own experience how things can get progressively difficult but that there is a solution in the end - never give up - and you didn't! Interesting that all the "fancy" stuff didn't work, like using the high-lift as winch, or the belt over the wheels. Also, how does the diff lock work for the defender? Did I understand correctly that the wheels turned freely on one side?
@Thebluelandy9 ай бұрын
Yeah, it didn't seam that difficult in the beginning,but slowly we realized it was going to require a bit more than usual from us to get out. Yeah , all those didn't work here, for other times did. Always try all your repertoire 😎 we have a central diff lock, meaning we spread 50/50 the power to the front and back. But we don't have axle lock, so if in both front and back one of the sides is spinning you don't go anywhere. 😅

Great job learning on your feet. Digging always helps. But there is need to agree on a few safety rules that you must follow regardless of the length of the recovery and the desperation that comes with it. Like being under the car when the car is in gear, the driver attempting to drive while you were approaching the car on very slippery ground. Just rules to help you not turn an "exciting" recovery into a tragedy. Also, the topic on the winch could have waited 😃. No need kicking anyone when they are down.
