Melaka is my hometown. And we welcome you guys big time. Very smart decision to visit Melaka on weekdays. We Malaccan will hide ourselves from entering the unesco city center on the weekend giving space to the tourist. Weekdays the Melaka is owned back by Malaccan people. ❤❤

Gula Melaka it doesn't mean the sugar from Melaka, but its one of the name for palm sugar. Since Melaka used to be an international entreport, palm sugar is one of the famous item that being trade at that time other than spices. The sugar extract from palm tree, in the East Coast of Malaysia we call it as Nisan sugar, in Sarawak Borneo they call it as Gula Apong and in Indonesia as Gula Jawa.

❤ **Greetings from Melaka!** I'm so glad to hear that you visited Melaka. As someone born and raised here, and part of the Peranakan Baba Nyonya community, I love sharing the rich culinary heritage of my hometown. While the place you dined at may not have provided the most authentic experience, there's so much more to explore. I recommend venturing out of the typical tourist areas to discover truly authentic Peranakan cuisine. Melaka is home to many hidden gems that offer genuine and delicious Peranakan dishes, reflecting the rich heritage and flavors that our culture is known for. If you're ever back in Melaka and looking to try more Peranakan food, I'd be happy to share some good places.

During my childhood days we were swimming in that river and at the river mouth was the only loading wharf for imported goods like rice, tea coming from China via Singapore. Everything has got to be off loaded using human walking on a plank with rice sacks on their shoulder crossing the river. They local authorities wanted to start a so called river market to increase tourism like those in Thailand but had been unsuccessful due to lack of interest.

@@hafizhassan9786Correct. Malay was the lingua franca from the tip of the Malay peninsula and Sumatra Island until to the western part of Papua New Guinea. Even the Dutch in West Indies (now Indonesia) adopted Malay as the lingua franca over Javanese due to its wide usage in the Malay Archipelago.

Question: I've noticed at some restaurants that you use a spoon/fork combo to cut meat rather than a knife. Is this a custom, just a preference or for some other reason? Initially I thought it was because the dishes you were eating had bite size pieces and the meat tender enough to tear apart with a spoon; but, then Note used this method to cut fried chicken. Thanks
