Overlooked? It is second to London in the most visited UK cities. Can't move for tourists and insta folk. Overlooked cities of the world, Edinburgh isn't. If you'd said Ghent, Glasgow, Gdansk, Riga, Split etc etc, I'd agree.

The unfinished Edinburgh National Monument on Calton Hill is also known locally as Edinburgh's disgrace. Edinburgh was referred to as the Athens of the North in the early 19th century, as the city was at the heart of a huge amount of philosophical, medical, technological and academic development, garnering comparisons with the ancient Greeks. The decision was made to build a replica of the Parthenon on Calton Hill, unfortunately funding ran out and it was never completed, hence the term 'disgrace'. I personally think it's better that it was only part completed as it has a lot more character than if it was just a complete replica of a Greek monument.

A few years ago I went to Edinburgh to go up Arthur's seat but they had closed it due to a rockfall! So went around the perimeter of the path leading up. Haven't been up since then. I was over in Edinburgh last year and done a 12 mile walk. One thing about Edinburgh it's incredibly hilly. Went from Prince's Street to Leith docks. Along to Portobello (worth a visit). Back to Prince's Street (uphill all the way) to Calton Hill. Was struggling to climb the stairs at Calton Hill because of the long walk before it. I'm from East Kilbride in the west and was asleep on the bus to back to Glasgow. Anyone visiting there are some steep routes. I will go back this year at some point.
