Learning to count rhythms is essential to basic music reading. Here is Lesson 4 of my teaching to count rhythms. We use the following language:
Quarter note: Ta
Eighth Note: Ti TI
Half Note: Ta- Ah
Eighth - Quarter- Eighth - Syn- Co- Pa
Quarter Rest - silence
