I have a 2012 Bayliner 170 with a 90 hp Mercury F90 four stroke on the back. It just made 40 mph during sea trials when I bought it. I like the boat, it is pretty basic and all we do is putter around at low speed in the Middle River in Fort Lauderdale. About once per year I get it completely warmed up and then I actually [illegally] bring it up on plane and go about 30 MPH just to get the carbon out of the engine. It is fuel injected, four cylinders, DOHC, 16 valves. So there really is no "carbon", the plugs always look clean, but I do it anyway. That Russian boat looks well built, but it also looks like they mounted the windshield of a Russian truck on the aluminum boat! The other odd thing is that the summer in Moscow is barely 90 days, so this must be an old video-

You can add U-joint between propeller shaft and engine. In case something gets out of alignment, it won't be catastrophic for engine, plus flexibility.
@the_kombinator7 ай бұрын
In Thailand, they have all sorts of car engines powering their boats. I've seen 4G63T, SR20DE (even T), a cute GA16DE, something out of a truck, an Isusu engine, etc. They decorate them more than the actual boats themselves ;)
@dodgydruid7 ай бұрын
My thoughts would be build a 1:2 prop system to take all that power and deliver it via two props linked to the single output shaft and your back end will really bite into the water then. Will give you a better straight line stability and to turn on the fly just knock power off for any sharp moves. Might need to have a deep rudder to give you a better turn radius. You could having the lathe etc to hand knock up a rudimentary output gearbox one which can handle the input from the engine, split the power and give you forward and reverse just by engaging a set of dogs, having a reverse is important as its the only way to brake without throwing out an anchor. Now if you put the thinking cap on, you could also introduce a bias where the steering is full over one way it cuts the power to that side prop so you can power round. I used to have a speedboat cruiser... right up to the point some bastard chainsawed the very expensive engine out its backside sinking my poor boat. After salvage I lost a fair bit of money on that poor thing as it was wrecked, never caught the git who done it but I battered the riverside pub owner who I paid to berth it and keep it secure grr grr

Can you imagine if you could get a Cummins 6.7 diesel in that boat? If it didn't sink from the weight it would probably stand straight up in the water and try to fly to the moon. Over 1000 HP and 1000 Flbs of torque.
@johannriedlberger43907 ай бұрын
A diesel has the big advantage that the fuel does not explode. With any gasoline powered inbord engine you have to be very careful to have no fuel leaks. A lot of power (torque) is a nice bonus.
@thatguyalex28357 ай бұрын
Diesels have better fuel economy compared to gas per HP, so that would be a great idea. :) I am the guy who is all about being economical (though trying to take 5 minute showers instead of 15 minute ones), and can go on 20+ minute conversations about this type of stuff. Curious if lightweight aluminum or titanium-aluminum, or aluminum-iron alloy diesels exist.

Hay thanks for posting..I often thought of building a boat and using a old fashioned flat head engine from a old forklift that are getting rare now but simple and easy to rebuild with no extra moving parts from the over head valves.. have the boat hull made with built in wheels so I wouldn't need a boat trailer to pull it on and off the boat ramps.. home stead the boat, live tax free or pay a dock fee 😊😊 I've built barges and work boats when I was a steel fabricator years ago and wanted to retire on a homestead tugboat like a tow truck driver on water 😉

Don't waste your time with a jet pump unless shallow water running is your goal. A surface drive prop straight out the back is the easiest way to get max top speed. A couple of A arms and knuckle from a car will give steering and trim.

When I bought my boat it had a 4 speed automatic gear box. This was very annoying. It does not make sense when it goes in kickdown when accelerating. Switching from forward to reverse makes an ugly sound because the propeller did not stop. I've thrown out the gear box and the propeller and use a jet-drive instead. The engine moved even a bit further back and makes a better balance now.
