@@NoTimeForThatNow I've never tried them, but I just saw that it's available (finally) on their website with a 2 box limit, so I just ordered some. It's not like I'm going to be carrying 22lr for self defense, but I'll have 100 rounds to play around with. I will not be making any calibrated organic FBI gel for testing them. edit: 24 hours later, they are shown as unavailable on their website.

I tend to be on the same side as Jeff in this, but the other side does have a point. If it goes through someone more analog to flesh, like the "FBI" calibrated gel, the petals might peel right back and turn into a regular projectile. Personally I think the petals would detach, but until I see these tested in said gel I withhold judgement.

Yeah! As interesting and fun the slug testing's are this was a bit of fresh air for change. Ballistics and bullet expansion are really complex topics and it´s an age old debate. It grounds down to compromises and what one is looking for. It´s a balancing act between expansion and penetration. No such thing as a universal bullet that works every single time in a expected way in all media it goes thru. Gel, fabrics like denim or leather, glass, wood or metal. Then again, this one is quite interesting as I find most of these light weight fast moving, more or less fragmenting bullets. Great video, as usual!

I don't carry a .380 pistol but I did check Ballistic Machinist's site and they offer a 4 petal Interceptor in 9mm. According to them it will expand out to 1 inch in diameter. According to their website they ARE working on a 10mm, .40 cal and .45 ACP round.

Watch my dad evolve over the years go from 22mag to 380 to 45 to 327 fed mag for carrying . He seen that I had an interest in the ballistics arts and alongside his fellow veterans taught me well . At a tender age I was walking backwards down range towards the the targets and my my dad asked me what I was doing. I answered that I wanted to make sure that no one was ready to fire on the line down range. 1980 was around the time. 4 to 5 years old . Yeah I got trust issues. Keep up the good work !

If you intend to make a gory surface wound...this is a good choice. For defensive purposes it's inadequate penetration. The .380 doesn't have enough power to allow for expansion...stick to ball for best results.

@@lolonoazoro420 They're light....56 grains so they have marginal penetration though they're better than many over-expanding HP's. Until you get to 9mm's I'm believing that you don't have enough extra power to afford expansion which takes away from penetration. A bullet that only makes it sometimes to 12" in gel is marginal...which the ARX seems to be. Picture a large muscular man needing to be shot...and that you might have to shoot through one of his arms to get to the boiler room to shut him down. That's a LOT of meat that needs penetrating and you don't have the luxury of waiting for a better shot like you do when hunting...so more penetration is better than barely enough most of the time. Remember that 90% of the effectiveness of a bullet is where it is placed....how the bullet reacts so long as it penetrates deep enough is a very slight difference. Ball or expanded HP penetrating the same distance have almost the exact same results because tissue is elastic and even thought he HP's will make a larger temporary cavity in gel which looks impressive...it has little effect on actual performance. A good non-expanding SWC type bullet has worked great for a couple hundred years if they're put where they belong in the target.

@@lolonoazoro420Think of them as a light weight ball round. Fluted pistol bullets don’t actually “tear” real flesh. They were designed around what clear ballistics gel allows them to do to make a pretty design, but gel wasn’t designed to test that. Ballistics gel is designed to test penetration, expansion, and retained bullet weight based on what we know bullets do in a real target from real shootings. That’s it.

The Ballistic Machinist certainly got those bullets dialled in for expansion , I don't think I've seen any videos where an expanding round worked so well in so many different mediums . Mike did a great job of putting them on target specially with a floating rear sight to contend with , though I'm pretty sure OG wouldn't have minded giving his poor shoulder a rest from all those hard hitting shotgun slugs We usually see on TFM . But from what I've learnt here I'd say this is (again) a perfectly functioning, very consistent round that works as a man-stopper (without a bullet-proof vest). These are great rounds! They make the .380 a much more reliable choice as a defensive carry piece, which is great news with summer here. Here in Florida it's already 85° and humid, with 90°+ days ahead; much easier to conceal a .380 than a 9mm in shorts. Thanks, Fleder Crew!

Those rounds are impressive- I’ve found a lot of defense/hollow point rounds in the sand or dirt at gun ranges, and they rarely expand like they’re supposed to, they usually just squish together. Seeing that round expand within a 3 inch depth of every single target it was tested on speaks volumes for its reliability in a life or death situation.

First let me say I always enjoy your videos. Your 'weird' targets are a lot of fun. For me, I I have yet to see a test of any .380 round that convinced me it was better than the 'old tech' Federal Hydrashok. In nearly every test I have seen (I say 'nearly' only because I can't be sure it is 'every') they give between 13.5 and 16 inches if penetration while still giving some expansion. Not extreme expansion, by any means, but some. In my own test from a P3AT I used to have one of them went completely through three one gallon water jugs. It might have gotten through four but it curved downward and barely clipped the edge of the fourth. I never found the bullet but the holes in the jugs beyond the entry led me to believe it expanded some.
