The C100 was probably one of the first cameras that over samples from it's 4.2K sensor (same sensor from the C300mk i). That's why it still holds its own when delivering 1080 to clients and TV stations.

Just bought a C100 Mk. II in 2020. I found that the majority of my workflow is in 1080p as it is and I decided not having 4K isn't a problem for me. I will take the fantastic color reproduction, sharp image, and other features (dual-pixel auto focus, XLR, built-in ND) over some flashy 4K any day. Granted, (this isn't the case for everyone) this is my workflow of mostly non-fiction client and documentary-style work, but I think it is still an incredibly powerful camera in 2020. I can't wait for all of my upcoming projects with it!

I bought a C100 mk2 a few months ago, having used 80D DSLR previously. I love the C100, it is like using a broadcast camera with buttons for features and excellent image quality. I recently went one step further and got a C300 mk i because SDI is a must for me. Audio is absolutely a step up, I found the +6 db and limiter combination to be amazing for crisp audio. @envycreative

@@nicholasolivas317 Hi, ProRes will get you a better image to work with with more color info, so you will be able to color correct it more accurately since ProRes will not compress the video file as much as AVCHD. However, the C100 does not record ProRes internally, you would need to get an external recorder to record in ProRes. But, we only did that once. For 99.9% of the videos we shot with it, we just used the built-in AVCHD to SD cards and we never had a problem with it. Hope that helps and let us know if you have any other questions.

Bought a used C100 mk1 without DAF in 2018 for 1000 Euro. I have used it ever since shooting for RAI, Italian public broadcaster. I just love this camera and the ergonomics. I used a Sony A7S before and, even if I loved the full frame sensor and the sensitivity, it was very difficult to use it in documentary style projects. No audio, no ND filters, toy batteries that last so little... and the main board of the camera got broken twice. Even if the C100 is 8 years old, it delivers a perfect image for 1080p broadcast and it's so easy and fast to get ready to shoot with it. And it's true, it's a workhorse, you can kick it hard and it never stops working.

This is a proper entry level professional cinema camera with the quality and usability to make you money. I still use mine with an Atomos Ninja for production work so I can record in ProRes 422 or without it for work like weddings. The thing about this camera and 1080 is that the sensor is 4k and it brilliantly down reses the image to 1080 in camera. There really are few arguments for shooting 4k over this camera's 1080 if the finished product is going to be 1080 or less. Beyond resolution, the other qualities that make up a good image really shine. In fairness, I do wish I had the Mark II due to the better ergonomics and 1080p60 and I obviously wouldn't shoot a million dollar project on it. But if you are on a budget, like most of us are, you should definitely consider this camera. I will personally never go back to shooting DSLR or similar form factors as my A camera again.

First, I would try to make sure you have the most up-to-date firmware on the camera. Sometimes, this can help with picture issues. Then, there are internal settings to tweak the sharpness. I have heard of C100 users saying that the image is "too sharp" and they end up turning down the sharpness in the settings. If you got it used, you may want to also reset it to factory settings to make sure everything is at it's default setting (then update the firmware) to see if this solves the problem. Thanks and let me know if you have any other questions!

@@redbuddhafilms 3 years on, so not sure if you sold the camera. But it might help people out. It's possible when bringing footage into your editor it's interpreting it incorrectly. Even 24/25/30P footage is flagged as interlaced, so when Premiere etc. uses it, it halves the vertical resolution by interpreting it as interlaced, rather than as progressive. You have to manually set the footage to progressive inside your editor.

@envycreative 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Not sure why it would be doing that, but a good rule of thumb with the C100 is the lower ISO you can do, the better. Also, make sure you have the correct shutter speed (for instance, if you are shooting at 24fps, your shutter should be 1/48) and an easy way to get the proper exposure it to use the ND filters. Not sure why the zebra would appear on obviously overexposed parts, but you also might want to make sure you have the latest firmware on the camera, since sometimes it is a software fix. Hope this helps!

I bought a C100 for AUD 1,250 second-hand in December. I love everything about it... except the images I get. Even with a sharp lens and with external recording, I don't feel like I get as nice an image as from my Canon M50 in 4K. It's soft and when I sharpen it by 20-30 in post, it still looks mediocre to my eye. Something about the texture of the image that looks less natural and pleasing than my M50 in 4K. At the end of the day, image quality is paramount to me: clean, detailed, and sharp images. The in-camera sharpening to me looks awful whereas a little looks fine on my M50. I'm still holding out hope that the disappointments with image quality are down to user error, but I've tried lots of settings and been disappointed every single time with the results. If you have time to say, what settings do you use for your commercial shoots? (Wide DR? CLog? Any in-camera sharpening? H Detail Frequency?)
@envycreative
@envycreative 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your C100. We upgraded from a DSLR years ago when we got the C100 and loved the color we got on it. Here are the settings we use on our C100, so maybe this will be able to help you get a better picture: ibb.co/PMgNGMT ibb.co/nR0ttjt ibb.co/2t7sH4S We played with a lot of settings over the years and here are some key settings: 1. Make sure to get the “film look” you are shooting at 24fps. 2. Be sure you are also shooting in CP CINEMA LOCKED. 3. Shoot at 24MBPS 4. Shoot at shutter speed of 1/48 5. We normally don’t have time to white balance, but found that the “sun” white balance gives more accurate color than the auto white balance. 6. The native ISO for the camera is 850, which you should try to make your max ISO, unless your picture is too dark. But, if you have a fast lens, you will get an even cleaner picture if you shoot at a lower ISO than 850 7. If you have any color or sharpening on, we turned that off. 8. If you have not done a black balance in a while, I would do that since it does help with the picture output. We actually tried using an M50 for a while, since we heard such great things about it, but the rolling shutter was so bad, we had to return it, since we didn’t have it on a tripod hardly ever and needed to move around with it. 😕 Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions!

@paullucas898 4 жыл бұрын
@@envycreative Thanks for the tips. It confirms what others say: stay at 850 ISO as much as possible and shoot in CLog. That's interesting though that the "sun" white balance is more accurate. Unforunately, it still seems like the M50 in 4K resolves more detail, which is a pain because I'd like to use the C100 for interviews, talking-head videos, and B roll, especially since it has CLog. I might have to give up some resolution for the great colors the C100 brings, not to mention those XLR ports for audio.

Not having any other audio recorders, and an extra spare DSR 570 body XLR condenser mics, Sony shotgun and wireless lavalier mics.. If I shoot video with my little D5100 I will be using that 570 body just to record audio.. heavy but what else can I do ! . Good luck with the business..

Great video, thumbs up! Question please. Is it true that when recording long time videos, if the clips is larger than 2GB in size, the camera will automatically split the video into smaller files? If this is accurate, I find this disappointing. Here's an excerpt from the B&H site on the C100ii specs: "The camera records video to SDHC/SDXC cards using AVCHD, a high-efficiency codec that has quickly become a standard in both the professional and consumer video markets. Maximum bit-rate is 24 Mbps. Video files greater than 2GB are split into multiple files while recording, which are automatically joined together upon import using Canon Data Import."

@envycreative
@envycreative 4 жыл бұрын
We use FCPX, so we are able to import AVCHD files directly from there. But, if we need to make ProRes files from the card, we use an app (on the Mac app store) called "Converter Pro" (apps.apple.com/us/app/converter-pro/id702464902?mt=12). It costs $7, but is definitely worth it, since you can just drag your AVCHD file directly from the SD card into it, choose any version of ProRes and just tell it where to save the files. Here is a short GIF we made of our workflow for it: imgur.com/a/xtadmrK. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for the question! And yes, we still think that the C100 is a good buy for anyone looking into getting a first Cinema Style camera. The built-in ND filters and onboard XLR ports alone give is a great leg-up on the competition still. While it doesn't have 4K, it is a 4K sensor, just downscaled to 1080p, so you are still getting a great image. Thanks for the question and I'm really glad you are enjoying the videos! If you have the equipment, we would definitely suggest at least setting up the 5Diii as a B-cam (just to film from a different angle), even if you don't end up using the footage from it. Since the C100ii gives a better overall image than the 5Diii, the C100ii should be your A-cam and on the 5Diii, the best way to match it to your C100ii (assuming you are filming in CLOG on your C100ii) is to make the 5Diii image as flat as possible. This can usually be done by changing the image settings for the video settings in the 5Diii to "neutral" and then turning off a lot of the "auto" features like auto-exposure, auto-ISO, auto-lighting-fix, etc. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!
