Hear is a question for you, maybe even a video idea. In my past I worked as a security guard at a hospital. We were issued ballistic vests from a major manufacturer (Second Chance), the vests were custom made to our measurements. Working in a hospital we were surrounded by medical equipment and people that knew how to use it. We also had rare periods when things were not crazy and we would get bored. When you get bored you play with the toys available. What we learned was that when wearing properly fitted modern body armor, our vital signs were worse then without it. The change in vitals was very rapid. On average my blood pressure would increase by 10 points in the systolic and diastolic. My pulse would increase by 10-15 beats per minute, and my blood oxygenation would drop by 2-3%. These finding where backed up by a study on the effects of wearing body armor conducted by the Indian army. To my knowledge there are no other studies. Probably because no one wants their soldiers or police to stop wearing the stuff for health reasons. My question is: Does older armor, like you use and test, have the same negative health effects on the wearer? Not sure how interesting a video that would be, but the idea is free for the taking, just pass it on if you do not use it.

Fun fact: when I was in USMC Boot Camp, we trained with flak jackets, which were a protective clothing not meant to stop any actual ammunition, but hypothetically were able to protect you from shrapnel or knives. They were fairly lightweight and flexible compared to their strength, and were made with a kevlar weave. One of the many things we had to do in training was the bayonet course in which we had to stab a dummy wearing a real flak jacket, and we did not pass the course unless we were able to jam the bayonet through the kevlar and into the dummy.

Now this was late at night & he had to be at work later but didn't have time to fully change so just put his work shirt on over the chain mail shirt. Turned his back for a moment on a customer at the checkout & suddenly ended up with a knife in his back. The instant surprise that the assault did nothing let the guy overpower his attacker & subdue until cops arrived. When they did it took 2 cops to pull the knife out of the shirt given how well bound up it was in the links. Injuries were minor...just a couple stitches. Pretty sure he kept wearing that mail under his work shirt after that.

My brigandine modified over 14 years now weighs 12 & 1/2s Ib's. I still trust steel more then Titanium but I'm not as young & fit as I once was since I got corona in 2020 which knocked me side ways. If it was not for the cost & hazard I would like plates of silicon carbide as it is a 1/4 the weight of Titanium which is nearly 1/2 the weight of steel. Silicon carbide is 9.5 Moh's while hardened steel & titanium is about 6. You could make a vest or brig of silicon come out at about 7ib's which is nothing. My secrete & gorget is just hardened aluminium at about 3 Moh's but it is far better then nothing from 1st hand experience. Aluminium covering your neck in segments under your beard is a massive improvement to ones protection. For my limbs I wear a great coat or a thick leather jacket to just below my buttocks & my legs I like tall sturdy boots with putees to knee height. You would be surprised what wrapped up decent fabric can sustain against but foot work is best in combat for if you are moving then the opponent shouldn't get at your legs. People just think I'm eccentric in my appearance but it is all practical. I can wear a suit even & people don't notice so the bulk is not noticeable since I tailored it to by frame.

Most kevlar isn't stab resistant. Slash yes, but a drop point knife let alone the blades youre using will go right through even a Bullet resistant vest. This is why there are vests (Police/Military/Ect) have to be rated for specific types of prevention. You can stab straight through a level 3A vest, which can stop bullets. There are Ballistic resistant, Slash resistant, and then Stab/Spike resistant vest ratings. You can get something that is combo rated but they are usually a combo of lower rates armors. I would think the shirt is only rated for slash resistant, not spike/stab resistant. Reason being is the way Kevlar is woven. The tip of a knife/spike will separate the fibers and puncture something that isn't Spike/Tab rated.

Considering that body armour is illegal in Australia for civilians, this could be the best way to protect oneself if you're worried about being attacked.

Is it all body armour or just bullet resistant armor? I know in Canada in many provinces you need your gun license to get body armour, but stab proof stuff is exempt. They might rule these prohibited if the plates can stop even small arms fire though

In London, east end youth street gangs stab each other. Elsewhere, you are very, very unlikely to be stabbed. Even if you add the gangs in, still 2x safer for stabbings than anywhere in the USA. I'd walk anywhere any time of day and night in that city, and I have. And you can send your kid to school without them getting shot to death by incels too, obviously.

I'm not sure how it would help if it was "stab proof". Stab proof how, anyway? Even if the fabric didn't break on the stab, the knife - wrapped around the shirt - would still likely break the skin and enter your bowels. ;)

I was in Cardiff last spring. Caught an early train on Saturday with my wife and kids. Can confirm. The party was getting started when we went to bed. The zombies, who had looked like corpses collapsed on the street all day, started to stir as the sun set. People literally rose out of the tall grass in the park near the castle. It was freaking creepy, and we were glad to get inside for the night. Down town was a disater area in the morning. My ten year old was cursed out by a vagrant just for looking in his direction from thirty feet away. He started following us but backed off when I turned in his direction so the family could skedaddle. Loved our visit otherwise. Took a guided Doctor Who tour. Terrance, our tour guide, was fantastic. We kept in touch and exchanged christmas cards. The rest of the city was absolutely lovely as well. Shame about the party zombies.

something to keep in mind is Kevlar is a name brand, not all fabrics claiming to be Kevlar actually are. Also Kevlar (brand) never claimed to be stab/cut proof. The way their fabric works is like a catchers mitt for blunt projectiles. Anything sharp will just slash the fabric

There was a company in Germany back in the late 90's that made titanium chainmail, mainly for bouncers and bodyguards. Quite fashionable, too. Mostly polo shirts, so you could pop the collar to protect the neck, even. I remember there being a lot of interest, but it was stupid expensive, which is probably why I've never seen that armour in real life. Don't think they're still around.

As a ballistic-armor admirer, its job is to be tough enough to save your life at least once while being a light as it can. This really looks like it emulates that with stabbing/slashing. A lvl4 plate vest won't stop you from getting shot in the neck but anything that ups your odds of a miss is a win. Plus I'm sure someone wearing this getting attacked would be running or moving, just adding the glancing opportunity is enough to help you run to safety or help without possibly bleeding out.
@foxtroika169810 ай бұрын
You should probably have put the chainmail on a dummy as it not having a solid surface behind it but just letting it hang affected the test. Otherwise no complaints. Interesting clothes.

I think if you're only getting slash resistance the PPSS SlashPro gear is the way to go that stuff laughs off boxcutter blades. If you're going stab-proof you might as well go all out "where permitted" with Safelife FRAS flexible rifle armor that stops everything up to and including 556/7.52x39 PLUS is NIJ Level 3 Spike rated up to 65 joules, solid blunt force protection. It's only 0.73in thick, weighs 5.3lbs and gives you complete wrap-around coverage

There's a bit of a flaw in your testing method comparison: The chainmail is up against a solid wall taking the full force of any strike, while the figure can fall backwards translating some of the force into movement, meaning it will not take all of it.

Since chainmail is heavy but can conform to any shape really and the plates are light but has a very specific shape it would make sense to make a hybrid with plates surrounded by chainmail

Attacking the side (under the armpit) is great for close proximities... like handshake or hug distance. You can generate more force being able to bring the knife out farther (again in close proximity). If you are behind someone and assuming you're right handed, you can attack the liver. Not having plates on the side is going to be a definite issue against someone that knows what they are doing.
@pathfinderlight10 ай бұрын
The point of any armor is to add protection so an enemy has to do more/different work to hurt you. The situation of a stealthy, in-close quick stab to the gut is a great example for this because the Guardian Wear jacket (coat of plates) protects against it so well. An attacker would be forced to give his attack a bigger wind-up, which itself might mean the difference between a successful defense and death for the defender.

I enjoyed this test. There is one big "BUT" in the protection. The force of the hit on the person even if the soft or medium armor doesn't allow it threw. A stopped blade means it is turned into impact damage. Point impact will sometimes do massive impact damage. It is the reason the true thrust proof armor is more hardened. Even bullets stopped by a vest or plate can transmit the bullet damage to impact damage causing a lot of damage. Even the chain mail has this flaw. It might stop something, but the point of impact still causes a lot of damage. Take Care and Stay Safe, guys.
