I can't thank you enough for posting this video! I'm not familiar with this train, so I wanted to see what I could expect. I was nervous about my accommodations... not knowing what to expect. Now, I'm at ease and ready for my trip!

Good video. The problem with Amtrak in the USA is the price, around $852 one way single occupancy. If you want a private shower, price goes up to over $1,600. Something similar in Europe could range from $100 to $300 single occupancy. In other parts of the world, could range from $40 to $100 single occupancy. I'm sorry to say, it's just not worth it when you can fly for $100, and add $200 for a hotel for the night, and save a lot of time. Especially when there's nothing to see out the window along the way. Good service and decent food still doesn't cut it for me to pay a premium of 8 or 9 times the price of a flight.

Roomettes are really better for one person. Next time try the full bedroom. You and your companion won’t be staring at each other the whole time. Everyone appreciates the return to Traditional Dining on the Silver Star. Hopefully the Meteor will be upgraded as well. Being from Baltimore, we are truly excited about the new tunnel being built which will ease the congestion and increase the speed for the trains.

@@ronclark9724 31:43 I have heard from several of the video travelers that a better deal than the room is two roomettes when there are two travelers. Several reasons for this. When paying for a single roomette for each person the price is cheaper than a room for two. Also several people have said sleeping is more enjoyable in the roomette due to you lay perpendicular to the tracks which is a more gentle rocking motion rather than shifting side to side in the room sleeping arrangement. A further benefit is you can see out both sides of the train. When booking your trip request rooms across the train from each other that way you can be in different roomettes but with the curtains and doors open it’s like one big room. People aren’t constantly walking the hallway so it’s not much of a privacy issue.

Amtrak is true railroading. Especially when you have to stop for freight trains, engineers hours, locomotive issues…. It’s apart of the fun. I’ve done this exact same trip a few times on both Silver Meteor & Star going a little further to West Palm. The new roomettes are cool but I like to have my own bathroom which are only on the older ones. Very nice video, brings back memories.

Great video. I did this trip five years ago. Was thinking of getting the roomette but did the coach seat instead...uh, yep. I got stuck in the isle seat and next to a kid that took every smoke break that he could. Luckily I found the Cafe car and the $7 Jack and Cokes. My train hit a low overhead tree just outside Jacksonville, so just a short delay. You are correct on not really a sightseeing train but I enjoyed the trip. I would definitely do the roomette next time.

If I travel long distance by Amtrak I definitely will get the roomette. I’ve done it before and always sleep well, better than in most hotels. Plus I don’t have to deal with the stress of long distance driving as I’m a senior citizen. Air travel to me is most uncomfortable and stressful and claustrophobic.

im travelling on amtrak right now... i think they just need a lot more resources, and also i think during delays they should have more frequent and accurate updates, rather than leaving passengers wondering if it will be 2 hr or 12 hrs. just as a courtesy, because i think most people expect the train to be the more scenic and "long" journey

America is not a TINY nation like Germany or France. Amtrak requires SIX train sets to run the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago, not two train sets for the UK's Caledonia Sleeper or Night Riveria sleeper for one night daily services... Amtrak requires SIX train sets to run the California Zephyr and Southwest Chief as well. If daily service isn't enough, imagine Via's twice weekly service for the Canadian with three train sets? Amtrak requires THREE train sets for the Coast Starlight, Texas Eagle (north of San Antonio), City of New Orleans, Capitol Limited, and the other Viewliner one night sleepers in the east... Much more rolling stock is required for more frequency and routes... Even in Europe nearly everyone flies when the train route is beyond three hours...

I rode train 91 "Silver Star" from Columbia, SC to Tampa, FL back in 2016. The train arrived 6 hours late after the engine broke down somewhere around Rocky Mount, NC as well. They had to bum a CSX freight engine from the freight railroad they run over, so needless to say we were restricted to I assume 70 mph instead of 79 mph and it wasn't till Sanford, FL we picked up a Amtrak locomotive for the remainder of the trip. I enjoy riding trains regardless so not like it was a loss for myself and got a daylight ride over a overall nighttime portion of the route which was exciting for me, especially seeing familiar areas, but I hate it for those that do want to arrive on schedule.

On a recent trip on the Coast Starlight from Seattle to LA, we got as far as Davis, CA and just after breakfast the train stopped and we were told that the tracks were washed out ahead and we had to get off in Davis, go back north to Sacramento or further south to Emeryville and find our way to our destinations. Either way, they had no way to get us any further since the buses couldn’t through the snowed-in passes. A porter told us we should go to Sacramento rather than Emeryville. We are from Canada and don’t know the details of each city so took his advice. Once in Sacramento we decided to rent a car to carry on. It was Sunday afternoon and they were all closed. So, after an hour plus in the lineup to speak to an agent I asked for any way to get to LA. She said we could go back to Emeryville 😖 on a commuter train, catch an overnight bus there to Santa Barbara and then another commuter train to LA. Unfortunately, there was no mention of the almost nine hour wait for the bus in Emeryville. I rented a hotel room nearby to soften the wait. We finally got to LA exactly 24 hours late. Amtrak immediately refunded the entire one way portion of our trip. I was glad we didn’t have to apply for a refund (or even ask for it). Would we take Amtrak again? You bet. We can’t blame them for weather. We were unaware of the weather issues they were dealing with. In an entire week in LA it rained and was chilly every day so things were definitely unusual. We are retired seniors and are not wealthy but with a little planning we are able to take an occasional trip on the train (in a roomette) so people of average means can certainly afford it. We were road trippers and loved driving vacations but my hubby always missed everything because he was behind the wheel. This way we can both relax, have a nap, take a walk etc. He isn’t exhausted at the end of it. We love the privacy of the roomette and every meal we’ve had on the train has been very good. The crew are (mostly) friendly and accommodating. We’ve done the Coast Starlight four times now and will do Seattle to Ft. Lauderdale next spring. We are really looking forward to that trip. If you aren’t prepared for some bumps in the road when traveling, you should stay home. Things can go wrong no matter the mode of travel. Also, if you think sleeping accommodations are expensive on Amtrak, you should see the cost of a similar trip in Canada. You do have to be wealthy to experience that in Canada. We are big fans of Amtrak.

I learned the hard way that you won't arrive as scheduled. Going westbound bound toward the West Coast, it is definitely so. Aside from any unpredictable delays, they have to yield to freight train traffic. It's the same thing going eastbound from California. I left LA, and arrived a couple hours late to Albuquerque. In Denver, my train was horribly late. I was scheduled to arrive in Omaha at zero dark thirty, and arrived around 9am. The East Coast around DC and the Easter Seaboard is not to bad. Also Chicago Union is a nice hub to explore the tri-state area of the upper Midwest.

Canada would be great to travel through by train. Mary has harped on me for years around the journey being the best part of the experience and to slow down and smell the flowers. We're looking at some other routes in the west to see if we can hit them next year.

Just took that NYC-ORL trip last week. I agree the Flank Steak was really good. Came back on the Silver Meteor, was disappointed to not see it on the menu, had to just just get the reheated microwave beef short ribs. Have to remember to take the Silver Star in both directions next time.

DC to Savannah would be a great trip. Amtrak does an alright job of factoring delays into their scheduling but its unfortunately pretty unpredictable once you leave the corridor, I'd say just be flexible with your arrival time, maybe plan to stay in Savannah a couple days, and enjoy the ride

Mary and I joked about using the toilet in front of each other if we had one in our car. I guess it's a convenience if you are traveling alone, but so bizarre to have that right next to where you would be sleeping. It was a fun and memorable trip. We want to do a larger span out west with some better scenery next year.

Jeb Brooks better watch out, this was a great train travel vlog 😊. Brought back some happy memories, when we lived in Charlottesville I did the run up to NY, Boston, Philly, Trenton and DC many times. We also did the Auto train from Virginia to Orlando when we moved down here a few years ago. I want to do the cross country trip from Boston to LA at some point but need to convince my better half. I like this video simply because it's a more tourist view of the journey! As I'm contemplating a Train trip in the future, this gave me a really good idea of what to expect! I had a similar delay on the leg from Orlando to Miami! I got into Miami at 10 at night, 5 hours after it was supposed to be there. I wonder if they will reroute either the Silver Star or the Meteor straight to Orlando as both lines go to Tampa then Miami in the future as the Brightline Trains From Miami to Orlando and back will begin in May 2023. Thanks! 😉

@@165daytona Yes the Meteor heads to Tampa while the Silver Star heads south between Kissimme and Lakeland. It confused me as I was told last year when I took the Silver Star north from Miami and got off in Winter Haven. A person on that crew told me they were headed for Tampa. It seems now they had separated the 2 trains back to their previous routes that or I was told incorrectly.

You do realize that your "engineer delay" was a result of your previous "engine delay" since Amtrak is very strict with their hours-on-duty restrictions. The "engine delay" was quite unusual with the older model engine that your train had, since those are pretty reliable. They have had some software issues with the newer Siemens engines; I endured a similar delay in Milwaukee back in September. Fortunately that one was only 45 minutes and I was still able to make my connection in Chicago.
@ridesharegold6659
@ridesharegold6659 Жыл бұрын
It's pretty frustrating that Amtrak didn't schedule the engineer switch at a station stop especially after the first 4 hour delay. At that point they had several hours warning that the first engineer wouldn't make it.
@ViewFromTheCheapSeats
@ViewFromTheCheapSeats Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, it absolutely made sense that the engineer was impacted time wise due to the engine issues that we had. As mentioned by someone else's comment below, it would have been good if the extended stop was done in a station so that folks could get out and stretch as well.

The only thing about taking trains through the cities is. They always go through the worst areas so it's really not the best view. Only when you get outside of the cities do you see the really pretty sights. Cross country trip on the train has such beautiful views compared to going from city travel behind parking structures and through bad areas and all the different train depots

Very Good video!! It brought back a lot of memories! I took that exact trip....and to be honest it was a horrible experience. I really enjoyed watching you guys enjoying it. I wish I had a similar experience. I had the toilet in the roomette and the entire car smelled like sewer gas...every room in that car had a toilet. It was horrible! I was nauseous the entire trip.. The smell got into all my luggage and there was no way to get the smell out my clothing. I was extremly paranoid being near people...which was unavoidable. Next, the views are the worst of the worst. I was looking forward to seeing some decent views...but it was incredibly depressing. On the upside the staff was very nice and attentive. As far as the food...it was not good. But it was a few steps up from airplane food. A lot of it was microwaved prepared food. Overall, I really enjoyed this video because in a way I felt I "survived" that trip. It probally goes down in my book as the worst trip I ever had. From the looks of it I think they improved things a bit.
