Culver's is my favorite "fast food" restaurant. They are more upscale than your typical fast-food joint. The places are always clean, the staff is well trained and friendly and after you order they bring your food to your table. Their custard is fantastic.

A&W has the best onion rings on the planet when they’re fresh, right out of the deep fryer. Contrary to this video, they have a lot of flavour too. Harvey’s are quite good as well.

Sadly, Americans don't know what a Harvey's is and their A&W is far inferior to Canada's. Agreed that A&W has the best rings but they are way too expensive. You can get almost-as-good rings at Carls Jr for almost half the price - and just as good rings at Canadian Brewhouse, 3-4x more than A&W for less than double their price.

Your are right. All that about vanilla flavor is complete crap. Mashed is just a bunch of inexperienced people. I used to live in Georgia in the heart of where Vidalia onions grow. So they might be them or Maui onions, or Haleakala. The maui onions are one of the sweetest onions. I think Mashed folks have never had either.

Probably because you can no longer get filled donuts hardly no more. Only in private bakeries and that company out of Illinois that delivers to stores for a very limited time. Well, Dunkin just isn’t all that great anymore. I would like to find a good raspberry filled donut and it’s very hard to find anymore. A&W in the 60s had the best onion rings. Thick onions like batter and crispy. The California burger hard to get used to. It was a bun, burger, mustard ketchup, cheese, tomato, and lettuce. Does that sound familiar. Today we call it a cheeseburger. It took a while to takeoff but eventually people get used to it, including the idea of cheese on a burger.

Really good, fresh, onion rings are a real pain to make for most kitchens. The onions flavor the oil, so you basically have to have a dedicated fryer. The batter, if proper, is a real mess too, gooey and tending to leave residue in the oil. In spite of all this, they're worth it. I began this way to convince the best onion rings of all to return. Please, Popeye's, bring your rings back. Trouble it may be, but those rings would single-handedly decide the chicken contest...

The Kips Big Boy restaurants in Texas and in other states used to have the best onion rings. When I was a kid back in the late 50's-early 60's, my Grandmother would take us to Kips to eat and I always had to get the onion rings. I haven't eaten at a Kips since then, but Sonic's onion rings remind me most of the Kip's rings. I was not aware of the sweetness on the Sonic rings, but what I don't like is the weird taste of the grease that Sonic fries EVERYTHING in; everything has that same, almost metallic taste. Maybe it's just the individual Sonic, maybe they don't change the grease often enough...I really do not know.

I used to drive for PFG and deliver to all Popeyes and Churches in Lafayette twice a week in the early 2000s. They were delivered frozen and pre-battered with 1 exception. The last Popeyes buffet and only one that serves breakfast. The store on the corner of Pinhook Rd. and South College by the old Lafayette General hospital. They got 3 bags of fresh onions and onion ring batter from me twice a week. They also were the only ones that made their biscuits from scratch, those are frozen and had butter sauce delivered with them.

Your Host Restaurants used to be a chain in Buffalo NY years ago. Old style diner replaced by fast food. They had Fried Onions, not rings, just onions in clumps of batter, deep fried. Different sized clumps, crispy and doughty. Nothing like it. Fantastic.

Onion Rings should be battered not breaded. They should be whole pieces of onions, not minced and shaped with ingredients to hold them together. The rings should ideally be quite large, but the natural rings of an onion means there’ll be a variety of sizes. They should be thin, not great big thick chunks that stay hard and give a poor batter/onion ratio. They should always be salted as soon as they come out of the fryer (most deep fried products benefit from this) and you should ensure there’s none of the outer layer as the texture isn’t nice in onion rings. I don’t know how places can get it so wrong. Now I’ll watch the video. I already know Burger King is the worst, well deserved.

Haystack onions are also nice, they’re not an onion ring but I’ll be interested to see if Smashburgers offering has made the list. They need quite a bit of salt otherwise they’re bland and greasy. Once seasoned they’re delicious. If BK can call their onion ring with no onion an onion ring then I’d let smashburger away with having no ring.

Here in my area (Ohio) Arby doesn’t have onion rings. But I love Frisch’s Big Boy. Like Jack in the Box, they are uneven in size and don’t look attractive but are the best. Real onion. Red Robin are good 2nd but like other commenters, I haven’t heard of about half of the ones in the ratings. But like everything else, everyone has their faves. Variety is the spice of life!

Being a connoisseur of onion rings, for me the best onion is red, not white or yellow. I have been unable to make them myself. Most of the places near me use Sysco. Very few make them in-house, and i do know the difference. As for "battered" or "breaded", as long as the flavor of either doesn't aim to take over the ring, both are fine. The Onion Ring is about the Onion, not the coating (which should NOT contain Sodium Aluminum Phosphate or Sulfate leavening).

I went there for their fish sandwich and a small drink, $1.89 for a small drink! And @ tiny fish sandwich ,breading falling off ,tasteless tarter sauce, and almost $9.00 thats BS !

I like Whataburger better than Culver's. Whataburger rings have more seasoning in the crust. Culvers is borderline bland

I worked at Jack in the Box 40 plus years ago and they offer 7 always 7 rings they are portioned out before they are fried and the broken ones are never included the broken one do not make it into the portion cup. I used to enjoy Sonics rings a lot, Popeyes used to make very good rings but stopped, James Coney Island hot Dogs in Houston have the best rings I have ever had

I am originally from NH and like most places in northern New England, A&W made their own scratch onion rings and they were darn good. Even now in 50% of of the casual dining places scratch onion rings are the norm. I was extremely disappointed after I moved away, to not find decent rings. Most of the rings mentioned were frozen rings and not scratch made. Also, some were batter batter coated and not the better tasting crumb batter coated.

You said some things about Arby's onion rings in your video about them, so why are they not included here? And I presume that the onion rings at Hardee's are the same as at Carl's Jr, since they are sister chains.

The Habit Burger onion rings are excellent. You forgot to mention the accompanying Ranch style white sauce which you may have to specifically request if it's not offered.

One of the best onion rings I have ever eaten came from Cracker Barrel. I was extremely upset when they were taken from the menu. Their menu was ruined a few years back. The chicken BLT, the chicken and rice dinner, only 1 choice of soup, Italian salad dressing French salad dressing and the grilled pork chop dinner just to name a few were done away with.😢

I agree! Cracker Barrel got rid of the Country platter value meals and the catfish.
