I drove up to the Cape York Peninsula from Sydney in 1972. The images of Townsville are a lot different than I remembered, though the landscape is probably much the same. I do remember having to be careful about the little trains hauling sugar suddenly crossing the road. A town I particularly liked on the Queensland coast was Mackay, though I haven’t seen it in decades. Queensland was my favorite part of Australia. Though I’m American, my grandmother was born and raised in Tasmania, so I have some family roots there.

Sure you can drive for hours on end and see nothing but endless roads or you can actually stop and have a look around. We did a full lap with our caravan last year and another half lap this year. Instead of going across central Queensland you could have turned north at Cloncurry and headed up to Normanton in the Gulf country and then across the Savanah Way visting the Undara lava tubes and the Volcanic NP before coming out on the Atherton Tablelands above Cairns.If you wanted to experience some history you could have headed south east from Cloncurry to Winton, Long Reach, Barcaldine then over to the coast at Rockhampton. Did you go the mineral springs in Katherine, do a cruise or bush walk at Nitmilik (Katherine Gorge), Did you visit the stunning Litchfield NP, Ubir Rocks or any of the ancient aboriginal sites of the Kakadu NP , while there take a sunset cruise on The Yellow Waters Billabong ? Did you call into Adelaide River or Berry Springs, ? When you went down the Stuart Hwy to the Daly Waters and Larimah pubs did you know Australias1st international airport was in Daly Waters which you can have a look around. Did you swim in the mineral springs or drift down the creek on a pool noodle at Bitter Springs when you went through Mataranka ? Did you drive 10 km off the road into any of the waterfalls/swimming holes or limestone caves along the way ? The impression people will get from watching this video is that there is nothing to see between Darwin and Mt Isa other than pubs or a couple of roadhouses and thats far from the truth. By the way the best roadhouse to stop for the night is the Barkely Tablehands which is half way between the 3 ways turn off and Mt Isa.

Every Australian drive is measured in Beers, not kilometres, and every single Pub is planned out prior to taking off on any journey! 😂 Just be wary that the further away from Western Australia you travel, the more likely that you will not be able to find any Bush Chooks 😢

Minor point: mount isa = mount eye-za. Close your vents and whack the air conditioning on when you drive through bushfires. Keeps the smoke out. If you fly over central australia at night you can see out of control fires out in the middle of nowhere from thousands of kilometres away. At first you might think its a big city’s lights but then you realise its orange-red. Theres always fires burning unattended deep in the outback.

I'm glad you went through N. Australia, just so that I know what it looks like. Not a high spot on your world tour, me thinks! Anyway, I will be interested to see what the habitated part of Australia looks like. By the way, Australia bought some nuclear submarines. Why does Australia need nuclear submarines? Why does Australia even need a military? Who would attack Australia? I guess every self respecting country wants to have a military!
@Reneesillycar7419 күн бұрын
Yes we did indeed. I would kindly suggest researching the reasoning behind the purchase. Australia is rich in many sought after resources including land. The Oceania region is geographically isolated & security is important. Australia has a vast maritime domain & we depend heavily on maritime trade that needs protecting. Oh & as for our military, while it is small compared to some, it is well respected around the world. Without it we would be speaking Japanese. Does your country have a military?
@stog982119 күн бұрын
Australia was bombed by the Japanese in WW2. There was even a relatively ineffective attack by the Japanese on Sydney by small subs.
@andrefischer502519 күн бұрын
Very valid questions, do you know why Darwin was bombed more than Pearl Harbour in WW2? Not easy to comprehend but true. Northern & central Australia seem to be very strategic locations - not that I would understand why, but for some reason they are. Up here when travelling you got two options, spend several months checking out all the beauty or do the tourist highlights in a couple of weeks. There isn’t really a practical way to see it all without spending 6 months at least in the region. And even then you’d probably need a few years to do so because many areas are inaccessible for half of the year. There is only one sealed road between the NT and the east coast, and yeah it’s boring and not nice and damn long. Are there other options ? Sure if you have the time, equipment, etc….
@stog982119 күн бұрын
@@andrefischer5025 Australia and Japan were at war with each other after Pearl Harbor. I’d guess the Japanese had fantasies of invading and occupying Australia, especially while much of their military was off fighting Germany. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Chinese don’t still hold such fantasies.
@russmartin418919 күн бұрын
@@Reneesillycar74 The only country that might have eyes on Australia's resources is China, and that is a long reach. Besides,they have many resources too, such as rare earth. They don't have oil, but neither do you. It is doubtful China could even take over Taiwan. They don't even have an aircraft carrier. But hey, it is your money. If you have plenty of it, buy a fleet if it makes you feel more secure. God knows the United States, my country, has all it needs and more. They say the US spends 10 times more than the next ten countries combined. Just thought. You may have more whales and fish than China. Maybe they want them.
