I’m a painter and decorator by trade. Walls that haven’t been painted on previously NEED to be primed. If you just fire paint onto a plastered wall the paint won’t adhere and dry properly leaving it looking patchy. If you had primed first you would have only needed 2 coats after to get that perfect F&B finish. It tell you on the Farrow and Ball tins that they recommend using primer before using their paint. It’s definitely the best paint I’ve used. I will always recommend it when pricing a job. £48 a tin but the you get twice as much coverage compared to the likes of Dulux.

I'll echo what you said. PRIMER! With F&B use the F&B primer specific to the paint color and sheen you've chosen. F&B finish coats are thicker than most others and do cover more wall space IMO. One coat finish is fine as long as you use their primer. If repainting: Regardless of the original color and sheen, I would use the F&B primer then the finish coat. I have noticed a second finish coat (applied after the first coat has completely dried out a day later) does add some depth of color but its not necessary with an F&B finish coat. As to the cost, yes it's relatively expensive but if it's an important room that you spend a lot of time in, I think it's worth the price. Buy and test samples first (remembering that the primer will alter the depth of color in the final result).

I used to swear by Valspar's colour matching for F&B paint, but now I've gone over to the dark side and would never use Valspar on a period property. Long story short, I've learned from a heritage house surveyor that latex-based paints and those made with other synthetic binders (e.g Valspar) and modern gypsum plasters are not breathable and trap moisture within walls, leading to damp problems. So now, I would go for lime plaster in a period property and breathable paints such as F&B, Earthborn, Little Greene and Brouns & Co. I also found that on exterior wood, Valspar colour matched copies of F&B paint fade a lot faster than the F&B originals and as it's non-breathable, it started to cause timber rot on my timber framed windows after about 4 years. Totally agree that professional painters/decorators don't like using F&B, mainly because the paint is pigment rich and doesn't use synthetic binders (which give paint that creamy feel that helps with application) so F&B paint doesn't glide as easily when applying it and you definitely need to use a primer to cover up test swatches etc. to avoid an uneven finish. A bit of prep goes a long way.

Just a few additional notes on the F&B paint: - We did try with both a brush and a roller and both were equally as bad as the other. - it took 6 coats to finally get an even coverage 🙃 and yes I had to buy more cans 😭 - We were advised not to buy the primer by the pro in the shop, because they said it does nothing 🤣 - Whilst paying for the paint a Decorator who was stood behind me in the queue said “you’re gonna regret that love” 🤣 There are many people who have used F&B paint who think it’s great and don’t have any of the issues that we had, BUT, there are more who have had the same experience as us and most professional decorators won’t use it or charge their clients more if they really want to use it because it’s such a faff. The issue is that you don’t know until you try and that’s a lot of money to gamble with so having tried Valspar V700 paint (and loved it!) we would advise to use that and get it colour matched to F&B if you love their colours. Remember my tip from the last vlog to get an accurate match 👍🏼

Totally agree about F&B, me and my husband have a painting business (spray painting) and my husband hates F&B. We live in Wimborne in Dorset where F&B originated from and going back many many years ago ( showing my age now ) if we ever got a job in that didn't matter about the quality of paint, we used to go down to the F&B factory, where you could go in and they would mix it for you, while you waited. you could literally get a massive bucket mixed for £11! We knew the quality was rubbish but it was cheap as chips, so we didn't mind. Then a few years later they got the 'English heritage' stamp of approval and the prices went through the roof! but they quality stayed the same. My husband point blank refuses to use them any more, even though we spray a lot of antique bed steads and have customers who ask for a F&B colour, but we just colour match by eye and have sprayed thousands of beds over the years and no one has ever said anything about the colour not being F&B. BTW we use Valspar for 90% of the work we do, as the quality is excellent. Sorry about this being so long, but have watch a few of your videos about F&B and keep meaning to let you know a little bit of the background of the company. I'm loving this new series btw, but do worry a bit about the both of you when you start doing renovations, as you both seem to get a little stressed when living in messy spaces, but please try to chill and enjoy the process as it won't be like that for long.

I tell all my clients off for painting sample squares direct to the wall. Paint the colour onto sheets of a4 to see the colour. Then you don’t have to sand all the squares out prior to painting and also colour will appear slightly different depending where it is in the room. Haven’t got to end of video before typing this (so apologies if you found out) but go to a Johnstones trade decorating centre, they will mix all FB colours in a better quality paint for a lot less money. Cut then roll, rather than the other way around.

The room looks lovely Emma. For me personally, paint is just paint. My understanding of the “finish” is that it depends on the quality of the surface underneath more than the paint itself. I understand gloss, satin, matt, and chalk finishes but really, it is just paint! Most people change up colour schemes every few years so its not like it’s there forever. Doesn’t compare to a classic style designer handbag that lasts forever. And no, sadly I don’t own anything designer due to lack of funds ☹️

I find it really odd that you don't 'cut in' before you paint, but if that's your way of painting and it works for you. Looking forward to the end result :)

We do normally, but as we are putting coving on we only painted up to where the coving will be going (left an inch or two from the ceiling as it will be covered by the coving) but we cut in where the two colours meet and around the door first. 👍

That is really odd, I absolutely love Farrow and Ball because of the dense color and the spreadability fact that it covers so easy and so well. I love Farrow and Ball, however, I know it's not the best coverage wise, it CAN look patchy, and marks incredibly easily but I still adore it. Colour matching never gets the same texture. I love the chalkiness and how it looks different colours in different lights. I also use Fired Earth paint which is very similar, same price, but I love the chalkiness of it. They are very authentic to paints in the Georgian and Victorian periods which is what I was looking for, not a satin or very flat Matt. I suppose it all depends on taste and preference.
@EmmaHill4 жыл бұрын
I guess it will be different for everyone depending on the walls/lighting etc etc. But we just weren't very impressed, especially with the green wall (which had no drawings/markings on it and Simon had done a white base layer) where it went really patchy until about the 4th coat. 🤷♀️
@jenniferboyle28654 жыл бұрын
Farrow and Ball is more expensive because of the way the paint is made, their paint has less binding agent, less water but much more pigment. The cheaper paints use synthetic pigment as it’s easier and cheaper to produce, Farrow and Ball only use real pigment. This is why you cannot colour match them and the cheaper paint will never look the same. Also this is why Farrow and Ball have such beautiful colours that change in different light, and have that lovely chalky finish. I guess it’s just a matter of taste!

Of course the F&B did not perform as it should have ... you have to not only prime, but you HAVE TO USE THE CORRECT PRIMER. I'm a NYC based Interior Designer (10+ years of experience) and whenever I paint (my own house) I always prime and if it is a color I always have the primer tinted to the color. F&B is really unmatched when it comes to their pigment and pigment is what you are paying the premium price for.
@tijuanaforeplay82324 жыл бұрын
Do you recommend a specific primer brand or is tinting the primer the most crucial part?
@NicoleDufourDuRocher4 жыл бұрын
Tijuana Foreplay Farrow & Ball specifies the proper primer based on the color. If I’m not using F&B (Benjamin Moore - which I do not believe is available in the UK) then I always tint the primer, it is well worth the slight upcharge. If I’m using a budget brand I always use Valspar Simplicity which you can have tinted to match any brand’s color (note: may not be exact but super close and it will not perform the same as high end brands over time) Also, if you’re deadset agaibst primer, paint swatches on paper then tape to tbe wall with painter’s (blue or green) tape. Also, do not use masking tape either (like Emma has) it doesn’t prevent paint bleed (as she discovered) and it can damage surfaces leaving behind residue or taking up finish:paint.

Like your valspar service they name it and have it on file so you can go back anytime you need more. Why is F&B the first choice for so many vloggers or people on Instagram more so now than before. Farrow & ball is expensive because of the packaging, brand, shipping fees and maybe quality. They don't tell you a lot about their paint on tje data sheet, which is a problem if you want to buy it or to sell it. I would advise you to seek paints that has 40+ volume solids in it. That indicates you if the paints has good coverage. Also look for the level of sheen. It tells you how shiny the paint is. Also other tips, always buy paint from someone who could tell you those things. That would avoid you headaches. See you!

I completely agree re how poor Farrow and Ball are Emma. It's really insulting how they can charge so much for such a poor quality product. I used to use it and had no problems but I think they've definitely changed their formula as it's much thinner and the coverage is terrible. It took me 3 coats and I am STILL having problems with evident streaks and cutting in marks. It's infuriating because it's constantly up and down the bloody ladders and using reams of frog tape to rectify each coat. Seems like a very sneaky business tactic on their part to still charge through the teeth and yet weaken their formula in the hope no one will notice. I'm convinced that's the case. Anyway, yes, it's SHITE.

I looooove the colour you choose, bummer that it didn’t go on well... I just decided to paint our walls with F&B Dead Salmon but I’m scared now, I don’t have a fortune 🥴🙈 do you know what finish you choose in paint? I was going to go with modern emulsion.

I just used Farrow and ball paint in two different rooms 2 tons in one. I think the paint came out great. I think ambient temperature has a lot to do with it plus, you have to clean the walls well and use their primer.

For darker or saturated paint colors, I have the paint store tint a primer as close to the desired color as possible and that way can almost always get away with 1 coat of tinted primer and 1 coat of paint....so sorry if I'm telling you something you already know!
@EmmaHill4 жыл бұрын
We have never used primer, but maybe we should take a look. Although most of the Valspar paint we have used has been almost fine with one coat and we have given it a second just to be safe 👍
@JeralynVictoriaArt4 жыл бұрын
@@EmmaHill yeah you should'nt have to always use primer, unless covering a dark color or slippery surface OR painting over a light color with a darker one in this case, but it's honestly impossible to know 100%! I've painted a similar green in Sherwin Williams Duration paint and it was thick and covered in 2 coats, but at least you found out the properties of a more expensive paint & can wear test it yourself!!

I have been a huge fan of the Aura line, through Benjamin Moore. I have been using it for nearly a decade, and every other paint I’ve tried, has never come close. It’s very rare that I will use anything else, and usually there’s a good reason, but I’m always disappointed when I have to use another line.

I just can't do flat packs. When you tipped out all those screws for the bed, my heart sank. I just can't follow instructions, I feel like I've got flat pack dyslexia. My sympathies with the wardrobes. I pretty much wrecked a flat pack TV stand. I ended up having to pay a guy to come in and fix it. He said I'd done it back to front! 😖

Pro tip: Sort your screws and Co. first then start the montage. You can collect them in bowls or glasses so you can easily reach what you need and it stays sorted. Same goes for the boards. You can also use colors to mark steps in the instruction if that may help. I love assembling things.

Wouldn’t have used Estate emulsion for starters and especially not without the primer no matter what the guy in the shop said. Should have gone with modern emulsion would have been much happier with outcome!

A great vlog Emma. Poor you at the end. 😟 We have the same two colours in our spare room. I love them. Not sure which brand of paint we used as we have thrown the tins out but we tend use delux. You both deserve a good holiday when your DIY venture is over. All the best x
@CharlieSpoons3 жыл бұрын
We use FB paint, the trick is to put it on thick, dont try and eek out another sq foot. 2 coats only. Everything you need to know is on the tin. If you have lots of contrast on the walls ie new plaster, different colours, just prime with cheep emulsion white works so does light grey for darker colours.

I bought some F&B, and after three coats of still not covering I had it made up with the F&B reference and in almost one coat I did other walls. A paitner friend told me not to touch it as it has a bad reputation but their colours are amazing. They have sold their colours to big stores so you can give the F&B ref and get some made up for a third of the price.

A primer coat done over all those samples and multi colour walls would have stopped the multi layers of your main colour. The guy you’re buying really expensive paint from suggested not using primer.....so he sold a lot of paint to you didn’t he.

You probably should have looked into the paint you were using first. You used estate emulsion witch needs a special primer before using. You should have got modern emulsion witch has a higher sheen level but still leaved a matt-ish finnish. You can also wipe modern emulsion and are less likely to scuff it. I very nearly made the same mistake. Great informal video though

So funny how people buy farrow and ball and dont understand it . Firstly the colours transform a room . Better than any other paint. But the same goes if you want to buy a Dior or a top shop dress. One is expensive and takes time, the other cheap and off the shelf. If your not prepared for the hard work , then dont buy farrow and ball. It will need at least three to four coats. You also need to use their undercoat and primer for walls and ceiling. So patient really is a virtue in this case. Take your time. If you have kids dont buy the estate emulsion , they do a modern version which is more wipe friendly. As for the expense. If you take in too account it ages beautifully, its transforms a room so much you will keep it longer and the paint goes further. It is well worth the the effort money and time. Cheap paint means a cheap room. Its really that simple. Dont buy cheap brushes and NEVER buy a roller that is only supported one side, your will always get uneven results. Buy a roller that a professional would use. Remember when you walk in to a room , the walls are the biggest area, so why splash out on good flooring , and furniture and neglect the one thing you see the most of.
