Eden J they aren't actually the same thing. I wish I could say the difference and how US labeling confused the terms between yams and sweet potatoes. But all i remember about the hilarious heated debate in my nutrition class I took last year is that we ate ube ice cream after lol.

Yam and sweet potato are different. Yams has rougher skin, drier meat, and has more starch than sweet potato. And ofc sweet potato has soft skin, soft meat, and sweeter (hence the name). And both have several colours such as white, yellow, orange, and purple.

Belle Jacinto it's actually pretty common in many parts of Asia, Polynesia, etc . It's known as ube in Phillipines and that's what it's popularly known as but it didn't originate from the Phillipines. Don't be sad, it just means many cultures have a shared love of purple sweet potato 😊 the ones I've always had were from Japan and I was pleasantly surprised to learn other cultures use them in their cooking too ☺️

Mystearicia a quick Google search actually debunks what you said. A yam is a potato. There are three types of purple sweet potatoes Stokes (US made), Okinawan purple sweet potato, and Ube (purple sweet potato or a yam). If you looked for candied yam recipes they actually use sweet potatoes. So a yam is a sweet potato and a sweet potato is a yam.

Actually, that is not right, sweet potatoes and yams are not the same, in the US, they label soft sweet potatoes as yams to distinguish them from the firm varieties. And where i am from, i have tried both purple sweet potato and yams in their boiled form, and it does not taste the same. I am not sure what they are using in this shop, it may be yam due to the massive confusion on the labeling of purple sweet potato as yam, but unless u eat it, u wouldn't know. I love to eat sweet potatoes, but weirdly enough I dont like yam.

I noticed that the girl on the left is in many dieting videos but also she is in a video like this, I rarely watch buzzfeed, only unsolved series and sometimes when I click on a funny title, but it is strange that on one hand, she claims to have a great metabolism and eats whatever there, but also tries other diets, I kinda have a feeling that she is bulimic (do not jump, maybe I am wrong, just what it seems) or in general really obsessed with her body image, I might be wrong, but she strongly gives me that feeling that something is hiding behind that smile, she looks healthy, but many people struggling with ed do, just take some vitamins etc and you look better, and something about her in that way seems really off, she really seems like a nice person, but, is she happy with herself?

In Australia it's called taro in Asian dessert shops and I've been to Korean dessert shops and it was called taro too. And like others said it's also called ube in the Philippines. Maybe in America but no one calls it purple sweet potato here. Heck there was even a flavour called purple taro in a bubble tea shop (I thought taro was already purple but)

Purple yams, what we call ube in my home country of the Philippines has been around since forever. It's not new. I wonder when the Koreans started using purple yams on their desserts? We've had this in ice cream for decades. You can ask any Filipinos and they will tell you. I'm glad people are discovering it because we love it and it has a creaminess to it that I think is much better than regular yams. My mom makes ube by mixing it with condensed milk and velvet a cheese. We also use ube to make halo halo and ube cakes and all other types of pastries. My Oma (mom in Korean) and I were talking about how different it was for her growing up. She grew up as a Korean in the 80s and was bullied and ridiculed. Now Korean stuff is popular and trendy. She says I'm very lucky because I didn't go through all the shame she did.
