I totally agree that the original looks more realistic, in fact a lot of it actually was real! They used footage of real grass, filmed the tanks using miniatures & had an insanely talented team of professionals from ILM (one of the best VFX companies in the world) working on it! At the time this was completely revolutionary and still totally holds up today! The purpose of this vid was simply a personal exercise to try refine my skills and learn new techniques. I thought it could be interesting to try see if two people could remake this scene on a home computers using today’s technology and figured other people may be interested in seeing the results. I actually struggled a lot with the grass and lighting on this one. I really wanted to try get the grass interacting with the AAT’s in the 2nd shot, but unfortunately I ran into quite a few technical issues I couldn’t solve with the raytraced shadows. I also couldn’t quite get the scale correct due to limitations with the grass density. In a few shots I had 500k grass mesh instances on screen so performance was rough and I wasn’t able to polish the scene as much as I would have liked. I’m sure there’s better ways to go about this, but unfortunately I’m still rather new to unreal engine. I will certainly take in any criticism and try to do better in the future!

Both the remake and the original scene are great in their own way. It feels more realistic in the original scene but the details on the droids and tanks are better. Everything is stupid in SW and the prequels ruined it. A trade union going on a galactic conquest with a droid army? Just because some unknown dark figure said so? And the Jedi are now the rulers of the galaxy and also war leaders? Why would the trade union care about Nabu, some backwater unknown planet? Clone army, just because Obi Wan mentioned in the original SW a clone war. How about the Clone War was some kind of war between discarded mutant clones who joined the Dark Side and the Jedi were the only ones who could determine real people from clones? Like Blade Runner, but instead of robots you have clones. And the Clone War was actually a covert and hidden war, like the Cold War. Or something cool like this? I could write a better SW. I wished Disney would just a do a hard-reset and disregard the prequels. But not only did they continued with the nonsense of the prequels, they put 50+ years old actors into it for nostalgia. I /really/ wanted to see a 55 year Hans Solo looking confused and out of breath. I /really/ wanted to see a 60 year old Luke shitting on the Jedi. @@Ruzzky_Bly4t Good question. On the Original Trilogy, stop motion miniatures were the most possible way to give life over massive-sized vehicles(the AT-STs walking on ESB/ROTJ are such good example for that animation style). Considering the Prequel Era production happened the late 90's/Early 2000s, the CG quality was good enough to make realistic, smoothier animations possible for pretty much everything, and everyone.

Considering this is a fan project and using real-time computation this is remarkable! it's crazy close! I can't put my finger on it since I'm not a VFX artist, but something with the lighting is just a bit off. Perhaps a more matte material on the droids and softer shadows? I think in the end, until all lighting is ray traced real time, you're just not gonna get the same effect as a fully baked scene. Bravo regardless!

@edvenify2 жыл бұрын
tbh it makes sense. the battle droids are meant to be super cheap and disposable, a one size fits all deal. No in-built upgrades or enhancements -- just a robot with basic dexterity and functionality, than can use tools to meet performance short-falls (can operate a weapon, use binoculars, drive a tank, etc). cheaper to mass-produce rather than use a different OS/AI for every different situation.
@Plasmon192 жыл бұрын
Same reason you don't engineer humans with eagle eyes. The compartmentalized aspect of battle droids make their functionality flexible. A battle droid can use any equipment at low cost without having to mass produce every form of tool or weapon to fit a specialized role. This is something that modern robotics is aiming for as well with construction and rescue robots to minimize cost, if one robot can fit multiple roles it becomes that much more valuable without having to expend that much in resources. Although the CIS did allow for the construction of specialized command modules for droids in the battlefield to make up for the weakness of having to rely on a centralized droid control ship, which is a major weakness.

@qwert_au2 жыл бұрын
The OP has a point in a very specific context. While edvenify and Plasmon19 make excellent points- there are CERTAIN things that would not bear overall design restraints, for example additional optical functionality. You have to remember that we are looking at galaxy who's inhabitants have FTL. Not having built in weapons is perfectly arguable as per the 2 points, but optical or sensory options, unlikely.

@macattackk3 жыл бұрын
@@solaris5303 true, but it’s what it’s most commonly used for, and you get the Sam e result if you render frame by frame of in real-time depending on the quality settings.
