In February, I decided to take my wife, Sandra for a second honeymoon to Thailand. We quickly decided to fly with Qatar Airways and to, for the first time in my life, fly Business class! This video is about my thoughts of the experience. Enjoy!

Great video, I agree, I always pay for the executive lounges. Virgin have an excellent lounge at Heathrow where they have small rooms isolated with glass and long couches, very quiet and great place to get some rest between flights. Another excellent executive lounge was in Manchester (UK) British Airways. Agree, drinking any alcohol before or during a flight is a bad idea.

When you said you did not want to show Qatar Airways enployees since you didn’t have permissions, made me think of all the “travel by air” videos where you see lots of attendants in lots of airplanes, from which, I’m guessing, they didn’t ask for permission, and how, from you, it shows again, the respect you have for everyone working in aviation, actually I’m sure the respect you must have for people in general. Speaks loudly about your philosophy.

It's absolutely fantastic to see the real Petter outside of the cockpit for once and indulging in business class. As much as we all get carried away into first class airline review videos, it's rare to see such an honest vlog that really speaks to the average person for a once in a lifetime trip. My wife and I were ruined for long air travel a few years ago when we traveled to Europe for a river cruise. On the return flight, we had been booked in economy plus which had been oversold so we had been upgraded to business class. My wife has some mobility problem so she uses a wheel chair. When we arrived on the flight from Brussels to Heathrow the wheel chair pusher pushed her to the World Club instead of the normal wheel chair area. It was then we realized it was in a different world! It is so very worth it, especially if you are a little older.

I think it's good to keep the airlines honest in their policies and there is no sway either way considering they did not pay you or offer you free flights for this review. I don't know if its just me, but I've spent the entire VLOG (well done on that, keep going) waiting for several key moments: - "That's worth remembering for later" - Explanation that "The passenger is a XX year old male with a long history in aviation. His significant other has been with him before and they both reported being well rested during the flight" - The inevitable catastrophe. - The "What did we learn" part In all seriousness, amazing point of view. Your excellent advice about not feeling rushed is really important. I incorporate this into everyday life. Even just going to work, I leave early and don't stress about traffic. My life is so much more enjoyable now.

Meanwhile back when I flew out of Adelaide airport in 2006, their immigration hall opens only 1.5h before departure. So with my family reaching the airport 2h bef a flight departs, that hall was still shuttered with movable partitions that directed us straight to the gates instead (but airport staff would soon ask us to wait for that hall to open 1st)

Those seats in the 787-9 aren't Q-Suites, they are Adient Ascent based seats. In the Q-Suites you don't sit at an angle. Qatar also do have first class on a few of their 777s.

Hey! Just wanted to correct some information given in this video! So the suite you guys sat in in the B787 is not actually Qsuite but a newer slightly different but smaller version of it introduced only on the 787 as the cabin wasn't wide enough to accommodate Qsuite. It's called the Adient Ascent Suite. Qsuite is only available on all A350-1s and select A350-9s and B777s and is the seat you flew on during your second leg. Secondly, Qatar Airways does offer first class on select B777 to destinations like Istanbul for example but unlike first class on the A380, those B777 first class seats are not authentic Qatar Airways seats as their respective aircrafts are loaned aircrafts to Qatar Airways from Cathay Pacific during a time of aircraft shortage. The service remains the same regardless. Happy to clear that up :)

I fly quite a lot in business class long-haul, in the past year a lot on Qatar Airways. Access to lounges can be a game changer (can be because lounges in some parts of the world can be overcrowded), for sure the lounges in Doha. The Business class lounge is amazing, but the First Class lounge is next level - fine dining, jacuzzi, spa etc. Flights in business - definitely a game changer with lie flat beds, food (especially with the possibility to order on demand like in Qatar Airways), more privacy and other amenities. It is a completely different way of travelling. No doubt.

Even if you're flying economy, lounge access can help just for access to showers during a layover on a long trip. In 2015, I found a place in Narita (Tokyo) where I could take a shower, with no lounge access required, and they also had little nap-compartments. In 2018 in Hong Kong, I had to get lounge access to get a shower, and it ended up costing about $75, but I still thought it was worth it. -- Unrelated, one really nice thing about the 787 is the humidification of the cabin air. It makes a big difference for long-flight comfort.

I flew Qatar 2 years ago on my way to Japan when due to Coronavirus the country was closed to foreigners and tickets were almost free. Very professional and friendly crew, I totally recommend them but their prices are on the expensive side now.

I'm truly shocked that this is your first business class trip! Thanks for sharing your experience. Where else can you be pampered so well and be served meals with a blanket and pillows and watch a movie all the while experiencing the joy of travel? My first biz class trip was ord-gru. I'll never forget that first experience and my ability to travel in economy on long haul was completely destroyed 😂

I had the pleasure to once travel business class on a business trip paid by my employer over the Atlantic. The difference to economy class where you're being treated like dead freight that needs to be occassionally moisterized is an eye-opening experience.

On one occasion, I was offered an upgrade from economy to business for a reasonable price. It was worth every cent. I'm one of those who cannot speed while sitting in a confined space. But on a flat bed, I was able to sleep for several hours and arrived my destination well rested.

As others have said, this is a very open and honest vlog, and when I finally treat myself to a well-deserved vacation, I do believe that as you showed us Business class is definitely worth the extra that it does cost. And you were probably best suited to present us with all that you have available when picking to travel in this fashion. And it was nice meeting Your wife and partner in Life . My Son is taking a vacation in a few months and will be traveling from Arizona to Thailand and he is doing it in business class also. Once again thanks for letting us travel along.

at the right price business class is undoubtedly worth it. It makes the whole travel part of a long haul trip an experience worth having rather than an ordeal you survive so you can get to and from your holiday/work destination! Prices should start to come back down to more sensible levels now that the airline industry has got back into gear and the number of flights match the number of passengers wanting to fly better.

I flew with Qatar from Italy to Doha to go to Male (Maldives). A beautiful trip, made in economy but the level was very high. We had a great meal, great hearty food and slept. We flew out on two A350 and on the way back on a 777 and an A350. I will definitely fly with Qatar again. ps: Petter, this Vlog is amazing. Congrats to you and your wife

Hello Mentour :) Im thinking on recent case where one pilot as passenger replaced incapacitated captain... Ok, in this case it was the same type rating pilot... But anyway, in case you are traveling as passenger and suddenly pilot or copilot become incapacitated, would you offer to assist remaining pilot, even if the aircraft is not 737... to handle radio communication or something like that ?

7k round trip on that long of a flight for 2 isn't too bad compared to some of the rates I've seen lol Seems worth it as part of an expensive trip with loved ones, at least once. It makes the whole mood and experience completely different when you dont start off a trip sore and grumpy. Something I've done before is upgrade just the outbound leg of a trip for that reason, as it matters a lot less on the way back. Although, I've noticed a lot of airlines don't allow this on round trip tickets anymore.

7K absolutely sounds like a waste of money to me, especially since it only is for a couple of hours. Imagine having 8 days on your destination that gives you plenty of comfort.

@@Dirk-van-den-Berg I'm going to suggest that it's a relative and perspective issue/question. If you're option is a vacation to a GREAT getaway for a solid length of time (say 6 days or more) versus a barely afforded 2 to 4 days at a mediocre hotel someplace you can "tolerate"... for the price, then yes... It's probably a waste. This IS "Business Class" for a reason... and I'll get to that... IF on the other hand, you're on the way to a GREAT getaway either way, then why not? You might technically shorten the stay on budget, BUT you also essentially remove the first 48 to 72 hours of "recovery from the trip" because you had the comforts and friendliness on the flight(s) out and look forward to the same treatments going home... I've been on budgeted travels, and more often than not, I've wished to have a vacation just to get over my vacation because of the hassle and stress "in the field"... largely going and coming... not for being a stranger in a strange land... and NOT for "overdoing" anything. Business Class is how management and executives travel multinationally for actual business functions. Some of those people make multi-million dollar decisions and their performance HAS to be at its best. You DO NOT want someone showing up for an executive round-table that might make or break your company's YEAR in about an hour's discussion after they've been kept awake for 72 hours, cramped against a handsy jack-ass and kicked in the lower back by an obnoxious kid with ONLY bribing the flight attendants for liquor beyond their "in-flight allowance" as a comfort. It's a fine point where "It costs money to make money" and can DAMN WELL be worth the investment... I'm not one to take advantage of the pajamas... To me, that's a bit much, and I'm quite used to the dubious practice of sleeping in my "road clothes"... I've built a habit of picking out the "road clothes" exactly for that as part of their function... "Comfortable and casual enough to sleep in"... as it were. However, that's just me. I can understand how someone might find changing into PJ's (EVEN on a plane full of other people) more comforting than trying to sleep in whatever else they've worn on the plane... ...AND just to be clear, I'm only pointing out that (probably like yourself) I see some of the "amenities" as relatively superfluous, even if I can understand the point... haha ;o)

Yeah I thought that sounded pretty reasonable. I flew return with BA from Heathrow to San Francisco business class in June 2015 and it was a little over £10000 at the time for two. Which would have been equivalent to around $15,000 at the time. The seating seemed pretty similar to these ones as you had panels to pull up as well. Food was very good and it was extremely quiet as only around 1/3 rd of the cabin was full if that. On the way back we flew out 4 th of July and it was even more empty. Over 20 years back when I went on honeymoon to Havana we booked with a company called Voyages Jules Verne in the U.K. and they upgraded our tickets to first class for free. It wasn’t as swanky as today but still very good and the tickets were £7000 for both of us if we had paid. More than the whole honeymoon cost! Again it was very quiet as over Christmas holiday time so likely why we got an upgrade.

I am a tall guy and a normal seat is painful to me after a while, not enough leg room, but there are some extra seats with extra leg-room which are perfect, they are still cheap and more than enough for me. Those business class seats look great though

My husband is a big tall guy. We travel in economy class; sometimes depending on the aircraft we're flying he has enough room, but other times he's all squished in and I feel bad for him. Most of the time he's ok; it's just very bad luck if there's not enough leg room.

Business is the only way to fly on long haul. Anytime I fly to my other house in the Philippines, it’s business class. 15 hours in economy would be grueling.

Just a note that the old Doha International Airport is also used for executive private jet, mainly Qatar Airways private jets. As a business class holder you do have access to the Al Murjan First class lounge which is huge and don't get as crowded.

I flew from Australia to Italy and back with Emirates, which apparently they are exclusively business class. It was absolutely fantastic. While the seating arrangement wasn't the same (the Air Bed hadn't been implemented yet) the service was phenomenal. Because most of the trip was VERY light on passengers, I spent the majority of me time in the crew quarters playing poker with the hosts and unlimited, but responsible Scotches! ;) All I can really say is there is nothing like the difference between Economy and Business Class. One day, I'll try first, which my son has already experienced, but for now, I will hold on to the happy memories of those flights. Everything wound up being timed so the same crew team were on for the return flights (there were some changes along the way, but the main "1/2 hour friendships" I'd made on the way to Italy were there for the return journey!) The adage, "It's not about the destination, but the journey." proved to be true, I would only add "...and the friends you make along the way!".

So glad you had such a wonderful time! I'm still waiting for my first honeymoon (it'll be 35 years come September lol). You would have got on brilliantly with my dad. He was the ultimate in forward planning, giving himself plenty of extra time for every journey, especially if he was going to a train or plane, or if he was going to be picking someone up. I've taken after him, and if I'm driving anywhere, I usually add about 30 minutes for every 100-150 miles (depending on the route). As a result I'm rarely late for anything - unlike my old feller who used to be dreadful and always late. It has taken me years just to get him to look for traffic information before leaving! I'm always so much more relaxed if I can set the departure time (I've learned to tell him we need to be wherever it is earlier than necessary lol). It must have been a lovely change for your dear lady to be on the receiving end of such good treatment! She surely deserves it :) Looks like you'll be taking business class for any long distance flights from now on. Travel less often, but enjoy it more when you do!

I was privileged to receive a complimentary upgrade to Qatar business on the last leg of a return journey from SE Asia to Europe via Doha. This video did bring back some very happy memories. It is the only time I've been in a genuine business class (I have experienced a couple of short haul business trips and those were little more than just wider seats). Qatar's 777 are really nice.

So fun seeing you finally travel in business class Petter! I paid for my parents recent trip to NYC and I sent the on they’re way in business. They had also never flown business before. They really enjoyed Swiss business class. I would recommend you some time check out Lufthansa First class I you ever have the chance! It is really special going to the First Class terminal in Frankfurt and being driven to the 747-8!

Definitely more videos like this 👍 I enjoy all your videos so much. I feel like a private student learning so much about aviation from a different perspective. However as former cabin crew mostly on the 747’s and as an avegeek I got sooooo excited for you both knowing this was your 1st time in business class especially in the Q-Suites. Once you’ve had that experience up front you can never go back unless it’s your only choice. Congratulations 🍾 on your second honeymoon looked like you had a real 1st class experience and I would definitely love to see more videos like this. Don’t be so afraid to video more onboard or in the terminal most airlines love the publicity especially Qatar 🇶🇦 as there experience is so consistent. I really enjoyed listening while onboard it make us feel like we’re with you, so maybe watch some videos from Noel Phillips, Josh Kahill or Nonstop Dan. I subscribe to yours and their channels, they do a great job but all have their own niche just like you coming from a pilots experience and persecutive. 1st review the ground experience and the lounges and their offerings. 2. Boarding and seats on aircraft specific. 3. Food and drink offerings we want to see menu’s and how the presentation is. 4. Crew friendliness professionalism and of course the Loo review without a doubt lol 😂 5. Deplaning customs wait times as no videoing allowed in customs. Followed up with your over all experience and how you’d rate the airline. It’s a damn shame you can’t get discounts on other airlines via an interline agreement. However find some good deals on days off and do some reviews on airlines most reviewers don’t do and you’ll have created your own niche from a world class pilot who knows his shit up front but not so much down the back. We flew QR business class Atlanta-Doha-Singapore not long ago. Since then we've flown premium cabins internationally with British Airways (first), Delta, American, United (the newer Polaris seats on the 787-10) and Cathay Pacific. While CX is very good, especially the lounges, none of them were as good as Qatar's business class. No, I didn't buy tickets. I used frequent flyer awards and paid just the taxes or fees.

One other tip I would add about being early to the airport is whether you are traveling to a country where you need a visa. If you do, get there earlier than usual.

I have flown business a few times with work (including on airlines no longer with us like Continental (amazing!!) ). I have flown American Airlines first class and was underwhelmed - tired plane (duct tape holding the carpet down - in first class!). I lived in Singapore for a few years and regularly flew Singapore AIrlines SIN-LHR in business (on my own cost - usually with the help of air-miles). You are 100% right - if you enjoy the travel experience, the money spent on the tickets is worthwhile (if you have the budget obviously). To me, Singapore Airlines is the best business class product in the world - as a big guy, even I was finding the seat comfortable and roomy and a 14 hour flight was pleasant ! It's hard to go back to economy for sure after being used to being treated like a human in business class !

I've flown J with Emirates many times for work, so it's very similar to this one. It's a completely different way of flying. When you arrive at your destination, you're rested and refreshed, compared to an economy flight. It's the proper way to fly. But I don't think it's worth it, if you have to pay out of your own pocket, spending that much money for a few hours of flying. I usually use miles to upgrade, but of course you have to travel a lot to do that. Also, if you get your loyalty points with a company, you get many perks of flying in J even in economy, like priority check-in, boarding and luggage delivery, and lounge access.

I really enjoyed this video! You made me remember the almost magical feeling I had the first time my wife and I flew first/business class. What a difference compared to economy class! We really couldn't believe what we were missing out on. Like you said in your video, it really takes the worst part of any trip and makes it so much better. If you can afford it, I recommend it to anyone - even when you don't get the "best" of the best, it's still so much better than economy. Although I live abroad, I’m originally from Barcelona, which means that I’m back home often visiting friends and family. I justify my priority pass membership exclusively when flying out of BCN. All 3 lounges there are leaps and bounds beyond what most Priority Pass accessible lounges around Europe have to offer.

I always arrive at airports 4 hours before flights even on short-haul trips and even when flying coach, with good reason - there’s plenty of stuff to do inside the terminal (including things like have lunch) in most cases. Will never forget how much fun it was to have food delivered to the terminal at LAX waiting for my flight to Boise to depart back in April 2022. It’s also a fantastic plane-watching experience - most American aircraft terminals have fantastic views of the taxiways, runways, and the apron.

I enjoy watching the planes, too. The dark windows and heavy soundproofing make it much more pleasant than if you were out in the sun and the noise, and I even saw a C-5 come in and land, at a non-military airport, don't know why it was there.

Well, it depends how often you are flying... for 10 years I flew Manchester to Amsterdam every week, going on Mondays and back on Fridays... at the end I had the whole journey worked out to the minute treating the airport like an oversized bus station going straight from entrance to departure gate, at that point it's more about optimising your time than any kind of fun at the airport!... and yes I know I had a huge carbon footprint at the time so now I'm redeeming my carbon-emission sins of past by cycling to work 😀!

The Emirates business class seat isnt a great product to be honest. To me, Singapore Airlines is the best business class product in the sky. Great experience flying with them and the most amazing cabin crew as well. I was privileged to call Singapore Airlines my "home" airline for a few years, but it is an objective, not biased opinion :)

My wife and I are entertaining a trip to Australia at the end of this year from the east coast of the US. Business class on Qatar heading east seems like a good way to go. Leaving Australia, maybe Qantas across the Pacific to make it a round-the-world experience. Thanks for the review!

As a pilot, I'm surprised that you haven't noticed the very poor condition of Suvarnabhumi airport's runways. They provide for the most bumpy takeoffs and landings I've experienced. As a regular flyer to BKK, I fly Emirates and Etihad a lot. Unfortunately in economy unless I get an upgrade, a very rare occurrence in many years. I favor Emirates because of the A380 which provides unmatched pax experience IMO. I've tried Qatar a year ago because they had the best price at that time and I must say that I have been really unimpressed. Food, service from the crew, seats, IFE, boarding and deboarding procedures... I have found almost everything not on par with their competitors. And I really dislike Doha airport. It's too big and complex, one gets lost easily, signs are seldom and unclear, the food area is very difficult to find, almost no place in the transit area to plug a charger (I haven't tried any lounge). Dubai really is a much better transit experience.

Wonderful perspective and review, please do more of these! I recently went to Indonesia from Brussels with Qatar Airways as well. For three adults, full business class fares were too steep, but I did upgrade one leg to business class. The Qatar app showed an upgrade offer and I took it for me and my parents. We had a similar great experience on a Boeing 777 in Qsuites. Lovely staff, food and seats. This is something I did previously with Singapore Airlines, and I find this a nice way to enjoy business class but to keep costs down. I always chose the departing leg because we usually bring gifts to the family and the extra baggage allowance really helps. And we’re all stressed from work and excited for the trip, and business class is the icing on the cake for that. The return flight is heading back to work, and often at night times as well, so I don’t mind being back in economy for that.
