We tried to make a dual lye, hot process shaving soap for the first time ever! This is how we did it

Today we are having a go at creating a shave soap. Shaving soaps are created via a different process than our usual cold process soap creations and we have never made one before.
Shaving soap is typically created using both sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, meaning it is a dual lye soap. You also require either stearic acid or an ingredient which contains high levels of stearic acid. This is to ensure that the shaving soap creates a stable, rich, creamy lather. We are using Kokum butter as our source of stearic acid as Kokum butter is naturally high in stearic acid.
As this is our first ever attempt, I want to make it clear that this is not a tutorial. This video is designed to take you behind the scenes of our business and show you what steps we take when we first think about introducing new product lines.
I am actually following Jan Berry's recipe for today's soap as since it is our first shave soap attempt, we want to follow someone else's recipe rather than trying to create our own! Jan Berry's book is amazingly helpful and can be purchased via the following links:

I make/sell dual lye shave soap. My mixing arm is 5x larger than my other arm. Melt your oil in the slow cooker. You need a hand mixer to mix in the fragrance oil. You put this kind of shave soap in a jar, not a mold. It is intended to stay soft. Shave soap can be used right after taking out of the crock pot. It doesnt need to cure. I recommend throwing out that soap book.

I am also working on a shave soap atm. The dark colour came from the caramelised milk I believe.... I add milk after the cook when making HP soap, not tried liquid milk in a shave soap yet... when I do I'll use iced water and frozen milk putting the container in an ice bath to protect the milk from scalding. I can't wait to see how your soap goes when you try it

I agree with you Ann abt the book ! ...On your recommendation I purchased it and I am very happy with it...I want to try all the soaps particularly because I am interested in making more natural soaps with safe colorants and skin loving oils infused with herbs..Thank you for your videos, sharing tips and your method..I do enjoy them !

I've never made double lye shaving but I remember that they meant to be soft enough to scoop a bit to the shaving bowl and be lathered with shaving brush - if I remember correctly. Also there are probably at least a few methods and types of recipes out there to achieve different results.

I am researching as well. You can also get some stearic from soy wax. Of course the one without adds like gw 415. Lots in my group add this

I've not seen shaving soap that colour or texture before maybe it was the coconut milk that made it go caramel colour. I have seen several dual lye shaving soaps being made. I will be very interested in the final soap after they cure.

U don’t have to use a duo lye shave soap. My soaps are up there w butters and I shave w mine n my customers have w them. I don’t even advertise it as that, but the lather is so thick n creamy u can absolutely shave with it.
