Sutan learned that soy sauce and miso are made from soybeans! Whether we will be able to successfully complete it is yet to be seen because it will be at least six months before it is completed. Watch and enjoy the changing colors of this soy sauce behind us!😊 instagram.com/kimono_mom

A lot of lessons in this one - Sutan (and we all) learned the process for making things we think are so simple and easy are really complicated and require patience. When she spilled her water filling her cup, a good lesson was that Moe didn't rush to clean it up, by leaving the little mess, Sutan learned that it wasn't an emergency - and that sometimes messes happen and are OK. Thank you for sharing this process with us!

Moe-san, could you do a video of the different purchased seasonings ordinarily needed for Japanese cooking? Maybe showing the package, what to look for, what to stay away from? I'm always confused in the seasoning aisle. Kimono Mom videos are the highlight of any Friday! Arigato!

Wow... excellent job!!! This is a great way to learn where the foods come from... My son still cannot accept that pasta sauce is made of tomatoes 😂 My grandma used to make soy sauce and soybean paste at home when I was young... I remember it was a long, long, and long process, but she continued to make it home for her family. I miss you and love you ❤

I love your videos :) I minored in Japanese in college and took a number of Japanese history classes. I see so much of the things I learned in college used in your everyday life! Your videos also help me practice my Japanese! Some fun facts about miso and soy sauce if anyone is interested: Many families used to have their own special recipes for both miso and soy sauce that were passed down from generation to generation. It wasn't until after the world wars, when industrialization was introduced to Japan, that soy sauce and miso began to be made with consistent flavor profiles. Although there are still many different variations of each ingredient to this day (i.e. dark and light soy sauce, or red and white miso), people now expect a certain flavor profile for each kind. It was only through industrialization and popularization of having consistent products in grocery stores that they began to stick to certain recipes giving us the flavors we know today. It is my understanding though that many families still retain their original recipes! Disclaimer: I only took one class on the History of East Asian Cuisine and Japanese cooking was only one segment of the entire class, which I took about four years ago. I am going off memory, so PLEASE correct me if I am wrong or feel free to add additional fun facts below :)

I wonder if Sutan will always love cooking with her mama or will she lose interest in it as she grows up? You never know with kids, she might one day decide to become a comedian! But, whatever the future may bring, the time she spends cooking with her mama will always remain precious to her. 😊 I watch some documentaries about Japan and I saw some households still make their own miso, so you are definitely not alone in this, Moe! 😁

I've never thought of making miso or soy sauce at home, and now I'm interested! Sutan was also able to help quite a bit today! At home, we use koji to make sweet fermented rice wine, great with glutinous rice balls with sesame or red bean or peanut or meat filling in the winter months! Is the koji for miso and soy sauce the same kind? Or is there a special kind for each?

We got everything made by manufacturer. It is convinient. But to experience the process, including the waiting time, it is priceless. I too sometimes make some fermented food just to enjoy the process and appreciate the result. Fermenting and food preservation is such an awesome invention in human history and I want to be part of its continuation by learning and do it myself

I love this cooking video, it shows how home cooking should be. Nowadays, people like to cook with disposable plastic gloves, Have this belief that it's more hygienic than their own clean hands which is ridiculous. Plastic habbit is toxicated original kitchen activity. Actually with proper lid u don't need to wrap and layer it with plastic. In old days when people make miso there's no plastic involvement at all in the making process, which the best way.
