Thanks for your support as always! As I said on Instagram, I'm mad at Sutan from 1:40 to 3:55, so skip it if you don't want to see it. For me, it's a learning experience as a parent to keep filming our everyday life. She didn't drop the rice on purpose. yess. My parents too talked about how important not only rice itself is, but how important the people who work to grow and harvest every grain of rice are, so i'm grateful to all those who make having a full stomach much easier these days. Thank you guys for all your hard work!

As a Japanese American, I remember our family growing up in the US with being told this as well. Wasting food was not allowed. Each grain of rice was valuable.

The biggest thing I appreciate is how Moe was able to move on from the rice incident and talk to Sutan normally within minutes. A lot of parents discipline their child for much longer than necessary or healthy. Having your Mom be mad at you for hours or the entire day because of one mistake is a horrible experience for a child and can create tons of emotional regulation issues down the road if it’s done consistently.

I actually don't think Moe did anything wrong with her discipline when Sutan dropped the rice. You can immediately see just how angry and frustrated she got, but she still took several seconds to breathe and compose herself before addressing it. Then, she explained to Sutan very calmly and firmly why it is so important not to drop the food and the value of the food. I totally understand the feeling of guilt that Moe feels because now she knows it was an accident and not intentional. It's important to remember that, as humans, we can't always immediately brush off something that upsets us. Moe was upset for a few minutes and then makes a visible effort to move on. And that is such a great way to go about this whole thing. Idk, that's just me, i actually think she executed the discipline perfectly. She reigned in her emotions, explained the reason she was upset, and did her best to move on. I personally probably would not have so much self-control in a similar situation

Absolutely, I completely agree with all that. Even if it was an accident, Sutan was, in fact, careless and, as a growing toddler, needs to learn to control her actions and that actions have consequences. Moe did that but also made sure Sutan knew that she still loved her.

Yes, this will be something Sutan remembers, she had an accident but it's very important that she thinks and is careful in the kitchen because she could get hurt. Impulses are normal for little kids but so is learning to control them. She knows and this helps her brain remember.

Yes I also think that is what discipline should be. Not displays of angers, no yelling, no tears. I'm glad she kept this moment in the edidting and let us see it. I am amazed about how Moe responded to this, with no yelling even if she look very upset. It must have been hard for her to keep her anger in, she did so well! It looks like Sutan understood how serious the matter was, she was focus to what her mama says, did not cries or have a tantrum. I will keep that scene in mind, if one day I have children Moe will be one of my parenting models, for sure.

What i have observed thus far is that in almost every episode, whenever she turns around to grab something, she always had her stuff close to sutan. Maybe just put the things further away so she cant just grab it out of nowhere and accidents like this wont likely happen.

What Moe did was very important but most importantly very well done. She didn't yell, she didn't make loud noise but she showed that she was very serious. Sutan knows that when she smiles, Moe also smiles after her, she saw that her mom was angry and understood that there are consequences to her actions (in this case, Moe scolding her) Food is a privilege, something that many people can't afford, it's very important that Sutan understands from young age this concept and Moe did it very well teaching her that

@@lunaromance2243 no they don't. But it's better that Sutan or any other toddler be taught at a young age that food is not to be messed or play with. Besides, what's great of what Moe did is that she was firm, serious and calm in talking to Sutan. Some parents (incl. mine) were just either violent or angry without giving an easy explanation as to why food is not something to play or drop on the ground.

It's important for parents to teach or discipline their child. Whether it's through an explanation of showing it through actions. Sure, kids don't fully understand, but any form of discipline would be better for parents to include an explanation. Even in the simplest of words. It's a way of teaching children what's wrong and right.

I like that Moe shows herself disciplining Sutan. It's real. All parents go through it and you can't avoid it. Moe's struggles and frustrations validate other mothers and parents that are raising toddlers. Parenting isn't always laughter, giggles, and having fun and looking perfect on KZbin. Parents have a tough job of instilling responsibility, discipline, and meaning in their children. Moe was very calm and explained things very well to Sutan. Great job Moe.

Sutan maintained the eye contact when Moe was explaining to her. That speaks a lot me , means she tried to understand her mom’s words, feelings and her own. Me as a kid and adult usually avert my eyes whenever I am having a difficult conversation or try to avoid confrontation. The fact that a kid does a better job again shows the tremendous effort her parents put in raising her.

Be careful to not misinterpret. Depending on the person avoiding eye contact can actually be a sign of intent listening. For extreme introverts like me any eye contact is stressful. In a tense situation even more, so I turn my eyes away to be able to concentrate on what is said.

One of the most labor intensive, hardest jobs in the world is rice farming. It's probably better now with modern farming equipment, but I can remember seeing rice farmers working all day, every day.

If I were a kid, my mom would have just yelled and screamed at me, even about things that were genuine accidents, and to this day I flinch when anyone raises their voice around me. I appreciate this kind of parenting-- it's not easy, for sure, but Sutan is gonna grow up to be healthy and well-adjusted, and learn how to cope with stress and strong emotions well.

Same. Also my mother would go on about it for weeks and unpack everything I did wrong since the day I was born. I also flinch around raised voices, don't like when people speak loudly as it gives me anxiety and am I'm perfectionist which I'm trying hard to let go of. Growing up in a family who has a rice farm background, my parents did tell me the same about rice, how important it is to them to care and cherish even a little peace of rice. Moe's way of teaching almost made me cry and I was happy to see other's thought. Thank you for sharing that moment!!!

This are Indian values ingrained in Japanese society although the influence of India in Japan has greatly reduced starting from 1600s but sometimes it shows in the way people think how they behave

I really appreciate that you included the part about teaching Sutan about the rice. I'm from the Philippines and my father came from a family of farmers. I remember that when I was a kid, I was having a bit of a tantrum and I refused to finish my rice. My parents got angry, understandably. My Dad then told me the story of how he had a rough childhood helping out at his parents' farm and how he planted rice himself from an early age. Of course, it was hard work because he had to study and farm at the same time. From then on, I tried to only take food that I could finish and not waste rice. This is a really valuable lesson that Sutan will take until adulthood. Thank you very much. I feel the respect you have for people, especially farmers, who strive to put food on everyone's tables.

I can relate to Moe because rice historically is sacred for East Asians. We are very fortunate today to have food easily available. I had to kneel down for 2 hours facing my ancestral tablet to contemplate on my actions, when I was young if I wasted or played with my food. It seemed very harsh and unreasonable to me at that time. However, if you've experienced extreme hunger before, you will understand why we should never treat wasting food lightly. I think Moe did a very good job explaining to Sutan. This reminds me back when i was a kid and just trying to help in the kitchen. When i made a mistake, i was scolded and asked to go out of the kitchen. Its makes me sad and hesitant when i wanted to help again. What Moe did here is splendid. She did scolding Sutan but also teach her to pay respect to the food and after Sutan promised that she wont do that again, Moe continued to let her helping and even get to brighten up the mood. I just wish i was teached like this and i'm happy for Sutan to have such a great mother. Hope you guys stay healthy ❤

I’m grateful there are parents like you in the world. Mom is so patient and lovingly teaches even when understandably frustrated. Dad works hard but still takes over with daughter after work and isn’t afraid to be hands on and loving with his daughter. I think Moe's response to Sutan dropping the rice was perfect, calm, and serious. It's important to help kids to understand not to waste food. She didn't yell or do anything abusive, she simply showed Sutan the seriousness of what happened. I think Moe did the right thing

Moe, you did a perfect job with Sutan. We learned what worked best for our sons (now ages 20 and 14) was that we were firm, we explained what they did wrong, explained why it was wrong, made sure they understood, and then made sure that they knew no matter what happened we still loved them. People say that you can't be a parent and a friend to your child. I don't believe that but I do think being a parent comes first. That means both teaching and disciplining them. The goal is always to be helpful and not hurtful. To guide while not trying to guilt them. Not an easy thing to do because regret and disappointment comes within the territory of joy and love. The hope is always that the good memories outweigh the bad but as we know in life, bad memories are often the ones that stick out in our minds the most. What I know is this, Moe is an excellent mom and her love for Sutan shows through in every video. Keep up the good work Kimono Mom. 👍👍👍

In no particular order, the first words that come to mind when I see or think of KIMONO are: culture, tradition, elegance, grace, calmness. You are the living embodiment of the Kimono just as your moniker says. I cannot think of being able to handle the “rice accident” any better than how you handled it on the fly. You turned a very stressful situation into a learning experience for Sutan. She will appreciate this as she grows older and eventually becomes a mother. You are a role model to parenting for us as well whether it be cooking Japanese dishes or these learning moments. Thank you for being real and truly sharing without much editing your life. One last thing, social media always has jealous people and those “haters” that will give thumbs down on anything they don’t agree with-please don’t let that bother you. You will never be able to please everyone, but remember they are a very, very small minority. For me, the most interesting thing about watching Moe scold Sutan was how calmly she did it, and it still didn't affect how serious she was. It was eye-opening and honestly quite refreshing. Do u know how many of us would've been hit or screamed at if we as children did the same thing Sutan did, even if it was an accident? I understand that parenting isn't easy, but this just shows that u don't have to beat ur children to discipline them (and u would be surprised by the amount of people who would find that strange). i think it's absolutely fine to teach young children what is important in life. you did a very good job moe, you didn't shout or scold her harshly, you only told her what is important with a stern voice. sutan will learn from you what is a joke and what is not a joke, she will grow up to be a respectful girl that will show respect towards food :)

I think this might be my first comment on this channel. I was impressed by your lesson for Sutan. It was gentle but firm, this is important for kids. As a korean, I grew up and raised by my korean mum, she wasn't always calm and gentle but she taught me a lot of things that now I really appreciate it. She was always firm but thoughtful. My mum still says she is sorry that she was so scary to me and she didn't pamper me when I was little but I'm so grateful that she didn't pamper me and I grew up well! I am not that calm and gentle like you but I hope I can be a mum who can teach my children about importance of things gently and firmly in the future. Moe I appreciate you leaving in being mad about the rice. That was a very patient way of explaining the importance of not wasting food. My mom used to tell me that the hands that farmed the food ached when food was wasted 😑 seems extreme but when I got older I never take more food than I can eat and try my best to not waste food.

This is probably one of my favorite Kimono Mom videos because it shows Japan's strong ties to its culture and ethics despite all the changes around them, through this simple mother/daughter exchange. One of my absolute favorite videos so far. It’s very important for us to see that rearing children is not always sunshine and rainbows; discipling your child is just as important as showing them affection. Moe-sensei handled this excellently and was able to teach Sutan a good lesson while maintaining her calm despite being very upset. No yelling, no hitting, just a firm reminder that while dealing with certain tasks, we have to use a certain level of respect. I love Kimono-mom even more for this. ❤️

Japanese rice is often called sushi rice here in australia for anyone looking, or you can try australian grown rice which is in smaller packets & grown dry (not in rice paddys full of water) so that precious water isnt wasted here. Its really yummy & buying local rice is far better for the environment than imported rice & food in general! 😊

I loved how you included the disipline in the beginning, that's really how I want to parent when I have kids, I came from very quick-tempered parents and the way you handled that was very well done! And in my culture we don't have rice, but due to our water being scarce in some areas we value that a lot and it is indeed important to teach kids the value of respecting food, and the the fortune of being able to eat :D

Moe-san, actually for me, the beginning part of this video is a gem. It's very important to be gentle even though in mad. I am still not married nor have my own child, but in many times i see parents scolded their children not in a good way and I feel very sorry to the children. I believe being gentle to children is something that we have to learn, it's not merely a gift. I learn a lot from this video. Thank you very much Moe-san for being a good example.

When I was a kid, I would be hit by my mom if I did that mistake. XD Moe scolded Sutan but not in a scary way and after that it seemed that Sutan felt what she did was wrong. I believe she reflected on her actions. BTW Sutan practicing her script is so cute.
