Speaking as someone who grew up in Oklahoma, it is NOT a southern state. We are pretty much the only state that doesn’t fit in any of the regions. We aren’t Southern, we aren’t part of the Plains, and we aren’t Midwest. We are Oklahoma.

A lot of the "weird" pronunciations of Oklahoma towns come from their roots as Native American words. Chickasha is a Choctaw word. Miami (pronounced mi-yam-uh) comes from the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Checotah was named after a Creek Nation chief. Even the name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people" or, more formally, "Land of the Red Man". This is a state built and inhabited by Native American tribes, and the culture of those tribes is the lifeblood of our state.
@16firebuff Жыл бұрын
I live in the town the Choctaw named Bokchito meaning pretty creek
@KSL-853 күн бұрын
@@16firebuff bokchitto means big river… sounds like boke-chiddo in the language. Chickasha just means Chickasaw and so pronounced like chickasaw with and SH, chickashaw… but locals mispronounce it to chickashay. Oklahoma means “group/people-red” and thats pretty much it. The word yakni “land” is not part of the name. Just for some clarification.

Tbh people at my old schools tell me that I am southern and this was before I even asked that question but I always told them that I wasn't and I couldn't tell but now I can definitely tell that I am and I'm okay being southern.

I've lived in at least one of these places, and YES, Oklahoma is most DEFINITELY a Southern State. The further south you go, the more southern you get and I don't mean the directions, either. If you REALLY want a laugh, go up to middle Missouri. When we were stationed up there, I went exploring one day. I honest to God came across these towns: (In no particular order) Tightwad, XXL, Uranus, and last but not least, Climax. To make it worse, they had this store on the highway that I HOPE was not a market of some kind. It was called "The Friendly Little Climax Market." I turned around and went back and took a picture. I was afraid no one would ever believe a place like that existed. Of course, this was back a good many years ago. I did manage to find a picture of it online. Too strange.

A lot of OK towns are native American words. So yeah. Hard to say!

OMG, I love this channel, and I'm not Southern. But in rural Ohio, they do play country music. In Hocking Hills they have one FM station, and it's country. So I learned to like Luke Bryan.

Well, is Oklahoma a southern state??? I was born and raised in Oklahoma..lived in Alabama and Tennessee....there’s definitely differences in the people....Okies are definitely tougher weather-wise.....😁
@richardaprilball37905 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about that...I'm not tougher anyway. Storm weary and willing to accept my fate so that I can sleep in my bed, not my basement - yes, but I grouse about the wind on our hill all the time!

My grandma was from Oklahoma and grew up during the depression. They ate black eyed peas, corn bread, and milk most nights for dinner. Although a very small meal it’s definitely a very southern one.

I spent a couple of summers in Durant about 40 years ago. Achille is a little flyspeck town south of there. Some of the locals had a little fun with this AZ kid by quizzing me on how I thought "Atch-lee" was spelled. They really de-emphasized the "uh" in the middle but it might have been there, it's a 40 year old memory after all.
