Being in and out of the house while being young. That is, they buy food with intentions, but being young means the office or social life pulls them away from home. Then they get food when out and hungry - BF does have a well stocked dining area.

also you should note that it looks like all the veggies are organic and they can go bad in 3-4 days (no preservatives). To counteract it, its best to make small, short and frequent grocery store trips. It may take more time, but less than 70 years ago in America, EVERYONE had to go to the store at least once a day or two; Not to mention that elsewhere in the world it is still the current habit to go to the store frequently.

Emma Kessler I can only really speak for myself and maybe my close friends and family circle, but I think it’s mostly true that people go for a big shopping trip (to a supermarket that’s most likely as big as a Whole Foods type of store) once a month. There we spend around a 100 USD buying things for a five person family we use the whole month. So we buy pasta, dried beans, lentils etc, toilet paper, snacks, tomato purée (it’s a staple in our house but not for everybody of course), meat that we either eat that week or maybe put it in the freezer, milk, frozen produce like peas, maybe tater tots or other quick SOS meals, cleaning supplies and fresh food for the next few meals. Then everyweek once or twice we go to our local shop to buy fresh produce for the lunch we wanna make (we usually make something we want to eat, then eat it until there’s no more. Then we’ll make something else. Sometimes we make only one thing, sometimes it’s a soup and also a bigger main course or pottage) we also buy bread or breadrolls everyother day. Dry or moldy (summer is very humid) bread is the most likely thing to get thrown out here tbh. And we also buy charcuterie cause it’s eaten at breakfast a lot here, that’s also much better fresh, so we only buy a little amount we can eat in a few days. Shop is literally a 2 minute walk so if something runs out it’s no big deal.

@ Sucks to be you Actually, depending on what type of bacteria was in the spoiled milk, it’s still edible and healthy for you to eat (if you’re not lactose intolerant). If the milk is spoiled in its own bacteria, the proteins clump together and create cheese and yogurt. If spoiled in outside bacteria, like _Brucella_ , you can get extremely sick... I would just stick to eating cheese that was professionally produced because it’s better safe than sorry lol.

Going every day would be very hard for some. But I think what they can do is buy all their food that their going to eat that they could find from meal planning before. Then they wouldn't have to go everyday, and still won't waste too much food. They could also just get food in smaller portions, and get food which has a further due date.

Exactly! And working full time is not an excuse to not do this, as long as your groceries are easily accessible (i.e. own a car, walking distance, or quick public transport). My sister-in-law goes grocery shopping almost every day after work and she has a toddler. They always have fresh ingredients for meals and never waste food. The biggest consequence is that dinner gets pushed back a little later than 5-6p, but when you're used to that it's not biggie.

Out of curiosity how often do people there typically grocery shop there? I feel like part of the problem with Americans is that we try to grocery shop too infrequently and so produce and other fresh things go bad before we use them. I think also a lot of younger people who live alone waste a lot of food because things are often sold in two large of a package for one or two people to realistically consume. Still not an excuse to waste perfectly good food however I think that’s part of the root of the problem. I know that was a struggle for me when I lived alone and didn’t have easy access to Transportation so I was forced to shop very infrequently and didn’t have anybody else to share food with.

How are Americans so wasteful? Like my family never throws food out. We eat everything before the final date. And having a small family and alot food is no excuse. I live with my parents because my older sibling all moved out and have their own families now. EDIT: I see a lot of americans commenting that these two don't represent the whole country. And I am sure their are americans that don't waste as much but the USA has one of the highest ecological footprint per person. If everybody on the planet would live like americans we would need 5 Earths to sustain that lifestyle. So I am not just basing my opinion on these two ladies behaviour.

Hi! It might sound weird or har to believe but it is difficult to not waste in USA. I lived in Mexico for a long time and I almost never wasted food. There was always someone in my family house hold that was checking the fridge to make sure nothing was going bad. But once I moved to the States, I noticed it was hard to do the same. I live alone now and I am always on the run to work or school. Sometime I am stuck in traffic for hours, so it is more convient to eat at school or work. Even if I bring my food from home there is only so much I can eat before it goes bad.

Its mealprepping but not the same food every day you just grab whatever out of the freezer and go. For me it works great!

Thank you... 2) I think a lot of the problem for many of us when it comes to food waste is that we shop for "the ideal healthy food I think I will eat," but ideal healthy food doesn't last forever, so if you get too much, end up eating other things, or forget about it because life gets hectic, it goes bad. 3) Mushrooms...mold...I had a joke in there somewhere, nvm

You just have to buy food, when you really need it, I mean don’t buy avocado if you’re not gonna eat this thing today or tomorrow. You better buy all you need to make a soup and something else, to have a dinner, get some milk and cereals or yogurt or eggs and bacon, whatever you want to have a breakfast. And any other food that you will eat today or tomorrow. When food is over, go to the grocery store again and buy something else to eat. But not like you guys do, you’re buying everything at once. Peace ✌🏻
@clairetj
@clairetj 5 жыл бұрын
Roman - in theory you save more money buying more at once, especially if it’s on sale ... provided it doesn’t spoil. Ex: when bacon goes on sale or buying eggs in 2-3 dozen packs saves half money. Also freezers exist
@CaddyMeister

Claire Cossette so? And what is the result? Half of this “cheap” food goes to trash, and as you can see freezer can’t always help, especially when you’re buying 5 packs of eggs to save some money
@TwelvetreeZ

Or just don't worry about 'best before'/expiry dates and cook more? Most expiry dates are set well before food actually goes off, so unless it smells weird or has mould on it, you can eat it (and with veg, nine times out of ten you can just trim the mouldy bits off and eat the rest). Then, as you say in op, if you cook more and plan your weekly meals, you're more aware of what you're buying/eating/storing and waste less as a result. Buying 'what you need, when you need it' is simple in theory, but often ends up being too expensive and time-consuming in the long-term.

Hi Auri and roomie ! Mushrooms : if you store them in a fabric bag they will dry, you'll just need to hydrate them before cooking. Old avocado, cucumber, yogurt, eggs : wonderful in homemade face and hair masks. A full bottle of quality curdled milk will be perfect to make paneer. I find the best way to waste less is to buy less though.

I’ve found an app that you enter everything you have in your fridge, freezer pantry and it finds recipes for you based on what you have and I’ve found myself wasting less food that way and also saving money since I’m not running out to the store to get one or two missing ingredients.

y'all are so quick to judge and say they're wasting a lot when none of you have tried the challenge or taken the time to account for how much food you're wasting yourself. i'm almost positive everyone in this comment section has wasted this much food before but can't stand to admit it lmao

I see a lot of people commenting about how much food you guys waste, but I can totally relate. I’m so bad at eating leftovers and there’s always some fruit or veggie that goes bad. I love that you guys did this video to bring awareness. I took something away and will pay more attention to what’s in my fridge! :)

@@nicodifictional540 It's bad, if you give spoiled/rotten food to your dog. But, speaking as someone who always had dogs, if you give leftovers to your dog after you've eaten (as long as it's not human food dogs should never eat, like grapes, raisins, chocolate, artificial sweeteners, mushrooms, avacados) then nothing goes to waste. My family and I NEVER had leftovers in our refrigerator, because whatever we didn't finish, the dogs then got it.

Some tips for stretching food: 1. Keep some long-lasting dried/canned/boxed/frozen foods for snacks or quick meals. Keeping a stock of meat in the freezer also means you can pull out what you need the day of and fewer grocery trips. 2. Try to only buy fresh foods (like veggies and fruit) you know you will need for the next 1-2 weeks. Keep track of what is going bad the quickest and use that first. 3. I like to bake 5-day old bananas into pancakes, muffins, bread, etc. If I will not use them that day, then I freeze them for later. 4. I use on-the-edge fruit to make jams. It is super easy and means the flavor is different every time. You can also take not great looking apples and make your own applesauce.

One really good food waste tip is, through the week, the little bits of your veggies you won’t eat like the roots of an onion, of carrot peeling, potato peels, the center of cabbage, winter squash scraps, celery leaves... anything food that could go into soup, freeze it until you need broth. I also throw in the tiny little garlic cloves that are too small to peel open. I just crush them and add them to the freezer. When I have a good amount and I need broth I just pull the frozen scraps out, I add water to a pot, add the veggies, and boil. The more veggies you add, the richer the flavor will be. It’s really up to you. You can make the exact amount of broth you want, and all those scraps had one more use. Just make sure you wash and scrub EVERYTHING before you peel or cut them up. You don’t want dirt in your broth lol

Portion control is a skill, and i’m not talking about only the size of your plate, but also the amount you cook. If you make something in a big batch, i find it easier to put it in the fridge in smaller portions, and then not cook again untill it’s eaten. If you want a longer shelf life, freeze food in premeasured portions. Also food thats been in contact with your mouth previously (half eaten takeout, sandwiches, old lunches) spoils suuuuuper duper fast. So sometimes its just easier to toss it straight away if you don’t finish it in one go. But next time, you need to think about taking a smaller portion.

My family of 4, (mom, dad, me, sis) have leftovers day every week. So we basically, clear out the fridge and heat up everything we had leftover from the 6 days we had in the fridge. Over the week, we do eat whatever is in the fridge as three of us work and dad is retired. So, instead of dad cooking everyday he cooks probably three times a week but small portion sizes as all of us diet control and we try to maintain our weight. So when we get to Sunday or Saturday, we have like 4 small containers of food leftover. Vegetables and fruits gets eaten pretty quickly in our house, we only eat chicken or fish and the rest are random lentil curry or pasta.

CH4 has good calorific value, can easily be used as cooking gas. And, if you are thinking of rotten egg smell of methane which is actually hydrogen sulphide, it will go when you burn the gas. Though methane is a greenhouse gas which can trap 25times the heat , but after burning it, it will reduced into carbon and hydrogen which both are very essential for flora and fauna existence.

This is SUCH a great video. Not only so you both are aware of the amount of food waste you produce, but to raise awareness to your viewers that we all need to be more mindful of the waste we make that go beyond just single-use plastics and packaging. I'm curious to see how much food I waste in my home in 30 days and to see if I can decrease over the course of a month as well :) Any tips for someone who's living with family and typically has fully-stocked fridges that never seem to empty out despite what seems like constant efforts to clear out the fridge by eating and cooking what we have?
