One more test: Use a long beam or pole, that is hinged to the frame at the rear, and stands straight up. Put the anchor at the top/end of the beam, with a heavy spring. Hold the beam upright with a rope. To stop, release the rope the beam hinges down, the anchor is firmly held in place, with points down into the dirt. Ought to be the shortest stop yet. On second thought, maybe a remote controlled car, so nobody has whiplash. Nice experiment.

Keeping in line with the maritime theme, I would love to see you guys make a tiller-style lada that steers and throttles like an out-board motor on a skiff. With the right lobbying, anchors could easily become a mandatory safety feature for all the new cars sold in the EU. Go for it Garage 54! ;)
@jort93z3 жыл бұрын
Actually, for real anchors, most of the effect comes from the heavy chain. You might have more success with a lighter anchor and a long, heavier chain.
@firepower70173 жыл бұрын
But they're driving the car when dropping the anchor. That is pretty much a dangerous thing to do even for boats as a good tug from the chain being tensioned will literally cause structural failure guarantee.
@Zachry863 жыл бұрын
Absolutly correct. Amazes me how many (boaters) do not have a clue about this. In ordinary weather the chain should take all the load and not even move the anchor. For big ships the anchor is mainly there to pull out the anchor chain from the chain locker. As for using it like garage 54 does I think it would not matter that much. Releasing it so that it would dig in directly without bouncing would be interesting to see
@izaacbanks33373 жыл бұрын
@@Zachry86 NO IT DOESN'T the chain holds the anchor down... When the chain lifts off the sea bed the angle of the anchors shank and flukes can no longer stay "set" in the seabed
@jort93z3 жыл бұрын
@@firepower7017 A lighter "anchor" with a longer, heavy chain would be much safer too, I think, Would be much further from the car, and there would be less energy in the bouncing anchor. Obviously it is dangerous either way, you can tell if you watch the video, lol.
@firepower70173 жыл бұрын
@@jort93z They drive the car, drop the anchor and see if it stops the car, and usually the anchor doesn't even dig into the ground and just bounces freely. No further reason to be condescending. Also, another thing you have to factor is that cars displace the weight from the suspension to the wheels to the ground. Unlike boats which is just the hull to the water. So making the chain heavier is gonna make the car slower, and any worse and it will sink into the dirt.
@lagmonster77893 жыл бұрын
This is why i ❤ Garage 54.. There's always a LADA destruction 🤣
@StefanBlurr3 жыл бұрын
Some marine men once told me that the actual chain is stopping the boat. The anchor just sits on the bottom of the sea.
@julianbrelsford3 жыл бұрын
Depends. We used to use an anchor driven into sand/gravel on the shore (you use your feet). Just a backup plan for if your beached boat happened to rock itself loose in the waves and current. I don't think the anchors we used were heavy enough to work well for any other purpose
@macslife3 жыл бұрын
Cool Video guys. FYI When you anchor a boat it is not the anchor that holds it in place but the chain. The anchor is only there to hold the chain in place.... is why one must put out three times the depth of the water in chain length. This provides enough weight and absorb the shock from the moving boat. I think that last part is key here, the transfer of kinetic energy down the short chain is too fast to allow the anchor to bite and the weight of the car over powers the weight of the short chain and anchor. Reckon if you use a longer chain you would get better results. Rock on and thanks for the great videos.

Something similar I have always wondered is if a car would slow down considerably if you open the doors while going full speed; kinda like the flaps on an airplane when it lands. Any chance you guys can test it out? have a motorized mechanism to open the doors to slow down the car by wind force. I can't find any single KZbin video that has done this
@cscrossman3 жыл бұрын
TL;DR: It doesn't really slow a car down enough to be effective. Many moons ago my high school buddies and I piled into one of my friends car. We had this thought while driving to the after school hang out spot. So, the driver got the car (90's subaru wagon) up to 40-50 mph and everyone that was seated at a door, opened them as far as they could. The driver let off the accelerator at the same time. It became loud from wind noise but that was about it. We held them out like that for a solid minute and only bled off about 10mph. Most of which could probably be attributed to normal tire friction and engine braking. So, I'd say the air resistance of doors has very little, if any effect on braking. Knowing what I know now about aerodynamics, it would likely have a larger effect the faster you went.
@yutuvefan4ever3 жыл бұрын
@@cscrossman Then that was a really cool experiment you guys did. Still, maybe they could add more flaps on the car then to truly test the airplane-flap system :D
@cscrossman3 жыл бұрын
@@yutuvefan4ever I'd be curious to see if you strengthen a convertible top and only allowed it to open half way, would it act like a speed brake on a fighter jet. I think the biggest problem is the speed. At lower speed you'll need a much larger flap to be effective. So maybe the convertible top and all the doors at the same time? Lol
@ericdysinger91933 жыл бұрын
Should have made an emergency brake system that lowers from the rear frame with a fulcrum by the rear axle.. This is activated by lifting a lever inside the cabin. The more the driver lifts the lever, the more it is lowered from the rear frame into the road surface.

I also believed that once you did that, it was unreversable and the car would then have to be scrapped.
