Such a jerk move of Josh, trying to take credit for something considerate Ollie thought of. BUT Josh did the right thing culturally. Ollie should have had the foresight to buy snacks for the other kids (knowing that they will feel left out) and this makes Josh look bad in comparison. The only class where I felt like the smartest student was in a beginner's ASL class. I had already taken 2 years of it in high school, so after a year and a half after graduating, I felt liked I needed to brush up on my ASL. I took a beginner's course a my community college. It was a BREEEZE, and I even helped another student (her first language wasn't English) along the way.

Ollie's message in the end really hit close to home. I remember watching this when it first came out and watching it again now as a yr 13/grade 12 student with no uni offers. 동.네.형.아 선생님들께서도 여러 사람이 모이면 집단적 이기심이 더 강해져서 무임 승차는 꼭 생긴다는 사실을 알면서도 꼭 수행으로 내시더라구요 일개미들에게 실험을 해봤는데 만약에 100마리 중 30마리가 일하고 70마리 논다고 치면 30퍼센트만 일하는 거잖아요 그런데 200마리에서도 300마리에서도 일개미가 늘어나면 일하는 개미의 수가 늘어날만한데 똑같이 30퍼센트만 일한다는거예요 (이런 맥락인데 수치는 기억이 안나서 임의로 적어봤어요) 그냥 본능인듯...

올리 마지막에 말을 참 예쁘게도 하네요. 수능을 포함 대한민국의 교육은 무겁지만 어쩔수 없는 현실입니다. 대한민국은 자원이라곤 사람밖에 없으니까요. 굴릴것도 캘것도 키울것도 사람밖에 없습니다. 10년전엔 더 빡쎄고 20년전엔 더 빡쎄고 30년전엔 더더 빡센 교육이었지만 반드시 10년뒤엔 지금보다 나아져 있을겁니다. 그러니 현재를 사시는 모든 대한민국의 학생들 숨 크게 쉬시고 오늘도 파이팅입니다^^

I really needed to hear that last part by Ollie, about just breathing and that even if things don't go according to plan, its ok. I may not be a high school student anymore, but as a fresh graduate from University my life is not going according to plan at all and I just feel incredibly lost and basically like it's the end of the world. It was very comforting to be reminded to just breathe. Growing up as an asian, you can't help but think that all is lost and beyond help when things don't go according to plan. The asian up-bringing doesn't really leave much room for hope and optimism in regards to mistakes in life and can be rather judgemental and stressful. at least, that is what I think. hopefully i can find my light at the end of this dark tunnel soon. Thank you Ollie, I really appreciated that.

A year later, I'll send some anonymous Internet hopes you were able to create a way forward, through your 2020. To date, all of my major life education and career plans have failed/ended within a few months or years (I finished college 22 years ago, graduate business school 14 years ago). After 3 or 4 failures (including some business ventures), I found comfort and motivation in the saying, "Not dead, can't quit." It's short and fast, easy to say out loud in 2 seconds, to motivate me to sit up out of bed, when I need to start filling out a job application I know I'm not well-qualified for, or even in the last moment when I'm afraid to click on a Submit button. Better to try our best, then deal with the results of failure, than to not try. Of course, easier said than done! :P In the US, the college system is almost designed to NOT give many students a clear direction or plan. More flexible, but less direction. It often creates a looser and larger feeling of slow, existential dread over years of job-seeking or choosing college fields of study rather than sharp, precise intervals of stress due to specific critical testing events (even if a student does badly on the SAT/ACT here, it won't 100% prevent them from trying to pursue many specific careers or jobs). Even with that kind of flexible opportunity (and risk of uncertainty), we can still feel some stress when any big or small plan we attempt fails. I'm not sure I can accurately imagine how much harder the pressure is with explicit and rigid planning in Asian education and culture. (I'm Asian-American, US-born, so I think mostly as an American) Best of luck!

올리가 수능 학생들에게 전달하는 메세지를 듣고 울컥 눈물이 솟네요. 저도 중고등학교 시절 참 치열하게 열심히 살았고 이제는 제아들이 그렇게 살았거든요. 전 고3 수능생 엄마입니다. 제 아들이 얼마나 열심히 살았는지 옆에서 지켜본 제가 누구보다 잘 알기에 수능생에 대한 말만 나와도 주체할 수 없는 감정에 휩싸이게 되네요. 바로 그저께 모든 면접을 끝내고 이제 결과만 기다리고 있습니다. 초등학교 때부터 오로지 한가지 꿈을 위해 열심히 달려온 내 아들의 꿈이 꼭 이루어지길 바랍니다. 전국 고3 수험생들 그동안 정말 고생 많았어요~ 대한민국의 중고등학교 코스를 무사히 통과한 것만으로도 모두가 위너입니다!

when Ollie was giving the advice to the middle schoolers saying "A lot of things in life don't go directly to plan. But that doesn't always mean that its a disaster." I really felt that. I don't know about everyone else who watches Korean Englishman, but from at least the U.S. its all about planning and when something goes wrong, or you're not at the same level as one of your friends it seems like you're failing. 안녕하세요 베댓에 있듯이 저도 수험생인데요 마지막에 "숨쉬세요"라고 올리가 말한거 듯고 펑펑 울었네요ㅠㅠㅠ 요즘 학교에 도는말이 수험생활이 힘든이유는 "공부를 많이해서가 아니라 공부를 하지 않아서 힘든것이다 "라는 말이 돌고있는데 정말그런거 같긴해요 저는 항상 열심히한다고 책상에 앉아있긴한데 어느 순간에 보면 다른 친구들은 열심히 공부하고 있는데 저만 멍때리고 있는거 같고 그러면 그 멍때린 시간만큼 마음이 조급해지니깐 오히려 정신적으로 스트레스를 심하게 받았던거 같아요 약간의 탈모도 오구요ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ 저는 꿈이 없는데 그동안 학교에서 장래희망 써서 내라고 할때마다 저한텐 너무 고역이었던거 같아요 그래서 선생님께도 말해보고 부모님한테도 상담 해봤더니 "일단 대학을 가게되면 꿈이 생기게 될꺼야 그러니깐 지금은 이런 쓸데없는 생각 대신에 공부 한 자라도 더하렴"이란 말들에 정말 하루하루 똑같은 나날들을 보냈고 공부에 쫒기고 있었던거 같아요. 그런데 저한테는 공부밖에 없었거든요 제가 체육을 잘하는것도 아니고 노래를 잘부르지도 않고 딱히특출난 재능이 없으니깐 저랑 공부가 성향에 맞지 않는단걸 알면서도 지금까지 해온게 아까워서 계속 붙잡고 있었던거 같아요. 저는 인문계인데 요즘 자꾸 드는생각이 대학을 못가게되면 나는 기술도 없는데 어떡하지..? 엄마한테 너무 미안해서 재수란 말도 못꺼내겠고 진짜 이번 수능을 망치게 되면 이 사회에 제가 설곳이 없을까봐 너무겁이나요 그렇다고 부모님한테 계속 기댈순 없으니깐 뭔가를 하긴해야할텐데 뭘 해야할지도 모르겠고요 그런데 올리의 "숨쉬세요" 한마디에 응어리 져있던 마음들이 조금 풀린거 같아요 그동안 누구도 저한테 이런 말을 해줬던 사람이 없었기 때문에 더 감정이 북받쳐 올랐어요 이제는 마음을 가볍게 먹고 일단 수능7일 남았긴 하지만 남은 기한에 풀어지지 말고 후회 없도록 열심히 해보고 그다음에 생각해보려구요 그동안 너무쓸데없는 걱정에 묶여 있었던거 같아요 올리 너무 감사합니다 위로가 엄청엄청 많이 됐어요♥♥♥♥♥

감동동란 저도 그 마음 이해해요. 제가 수능을 봤을때는 십년도 더 전이지만 특별한 꿈도 없었고 그렇다고.공부를 잘 한것두 아니었고요. 해놓은게 없으니 마음만 조급했고요. 물론 수능도 좋은 결과두 아니었지요. 그런데요 지나고보니 수능이 제 인생의 큰 부분이 아니더라고요. 그냥 중고등학교 같이 보낸 친구들과의 추억등이 더 남고 정작 나에 대해 알아가는 시간을 격은 건 몇년 후였어요. 자신에게 시간을 주세요. 그리고 조금이라도 관심가는 게 있으면 그냥 해보세요. 해보지 않으면 이게 나한테 맞는지 모르니깐요. 뻔한 말 같지만 고생했어요. 정말. 남은 기간동안 더 하려고 하지말고 갖고있는 지식에 대해 점검해보고 자신을 다독여주고 올리가 말한대로 깊게 숨쉬세요. 매일매일 하루 일분만 이라도 작은 명상하면서도 좋고 집 주위 공원을 걸어도 좋아요. 심신안정에 좋은 캐모마일차나 시험당일에 로즈마리차를 가져가도 좋고요. 정말 정말 고생.많았어요. 학창시절동안. .. 공부때문에 마음껏 편히 놀지도 못하고. 후회없는 수능치르길 바랄게요. 🌿✨✨

진짜 너무 마음이아파요ㅜㅜㅜ 저도 저런 생각을 정말 많이 했었는데.. 일단 공부를 먼저하자. 꿈에 대해선 나중에 생각하자. 라고 생각하고 항상 그렇게 들어왔기에 공부부터 했던 것 같아요. 근데 너무 조급해하지 않으셨으면 좋겠어요! 20대가 되면 여러 경험을 많이 할 수 있기에 대학을 다니면서 좋아하는 것을 찾을수도 있고 정말 생각치도 못한 순간에 찾을수도 있어요!! 그 순간에 꿈을 찾아 다른길로 가는 것이 전 절대 늦었다고 생각하지않아요. 왜냐면 우린 젊거든요! 1-2년 버린느낌인데.. 이런생각이 당연히 들거에요. 하지만 그게 다 경험이고 나중에 필요한 순간이 꼭 올겁니다. 지금 당장 힘들어하지마세요!! 나중에 꿈을 찾아서 그꿈을 향해 가는것도 정말 행복하고 좋은 일이에요! 너무 조급해하지 마시고 꼭 진정한 꿈을 찾으셔서 행복한 삶을 살길바랄게요🙏🏻🙏🏻

The exam culture in Korea is so crazy. I feel terrible for all my students that have to go through it. I spend a good month before the tests working through the English portions so at least that is easy for them. But the stress students are under here to perform is disheartening.

Exactly. They must be the best or face crazy pressure at home. Not good enough here to speak just English and play an instrument. They need perfect grades, volunteering, English, sometimes chinese, an instrument and some other unique skill to stand out here. Pressure for kids is unbelievable here.

I feel like Ollie did a really good job just being an empathetic older mentor to those students who wanted nothing more than just to be a success and ‘get their life together’. He had been through the same stress of being put in the same system and having a hard time being in par with the others or the standard. But instead of being dismissive and generic about how it‘s not that serious anyway or that’s not how it’s going to feel in the future, he related so well to the students. He did not apply the same pressure and false promise of just hardwork and positivity they’ll have their life together. He’s saying that their disasters will work out, if it happens, and it’s not gonna be bad as it will sound. That you will be pressured to shoot the shot for the same top part of the ladder but it’s not really that cool and/or it’s okay to think that it’s lame and you don’t want to put yourself to the same taxing race. He sounded really feeling and tired for the students too. Hopeful and sensitive to some changes to the system that should happen. That was really sweet.

드림클래스를 1년 반동안 강사로 활동을 했었습니다 ㅎㅎ 저희 한국 아이들 정말 예의바르고 이쁜 친구들이 많아요 영상에서 과자를 쉽게 고르지 못하는 학생들에..ㅠ 마음이 아팠어요 마음껏 고르라고 했을때 가장 저렴한걸 고르는 학생들.. 비싼걸 사든 저렴한걸 사든 누군가가 사주는 것에 대해 미안한 마음이 큰 것일테죠! 드림클래스로 학생들을 가르치면서 이 활동이 더더욱 활성화되어서 강사들도 더 많은 열정을 가지고 학생들을 지도했으면 좋겠다는 생각과 바람입니다 ㅎㅎ 드림클래스도 화이팅! 한국에 수능을 앞둔 학생들도 화이팅!! 영상을 찍어주신 영국남자 팀 감사합니다 화이팅입니다!!

maybe it wasn’t intentional, but that “keep breathing” comment really got to me. i’m currently struggling a lot in high school and with my mental health, i have considered many options that are..... not very good at all. but hearing you guys just say “keep breathing” really made me tear up. thanks a lot for the great content guys, it’s so appreciated

I’m hoping the best for you. Just remember high school doesn’t last forever and it’s okay to make mistakes. Never let anything get the best of you and just make sure that you’re healthy. Just know that this rough time doesn’t last forever and we have to go through bad things to get to the good and happiness. “When tomorrow comes, the bright light will shine so don’t worry.” -Tomorrow lyrics. And just know that even tho school and studying is hard and the whole atmosphere may be tough, you’ll get through it. You always will and just know that your future is bright and I believe in you and you are doing great and should be proud of how far you’ve came. One day at a time 💜
