ICYMI: we live in Toronto, Canada AKA the 6ix AKA home to the one and only 6ix god Drake, who lives in one of the swankiest neighbourhoods in the city. We thought it would be fun to go DIY dumpster diving in Drake's neighbourhood to see what furniture we could find for free on the side of the road, and then upcycle these second hand pieces into home decor gold! We ended up upcycling an old arch mirror into a golden faux-antique masterpiece duping the Anthropologie Gleaming Primrose mirror, and thrift flipped an old shelf into a mid century modern credenza! Who do you think won this DIY challenge?! Let us know below!

No the sidewalk is not part of your lawn. The city maintains the roads and the sidewalks with your tax dollars. It is public and he is just being a dick. I live in the south of France and the constitution here states that the coastline is public property and owned by all citizens. So you can't have private beaches etc as we have the right to be able to walk the entire coast. Except that rich people build their terraces there anyway and hire security to keep people off the beach or rhe sidewalks! It's very frustrating!

5:14 - yeah, that's a public road. His property starts with his fence. The usual municipal road allowance on a street like this in Toronto is 66 feet from the curb. It might be different in this specific spot, but it's very unlikely that it's zero and it doesn't matter whether there's a sidewalk or not. Your taxes pay for that road, so you could have politely declined that guys "very friendly suggestion" to cross the road. Rich people don't own everything.

Sorry Girls - You need to go upcycling again when people are spring cleaning. That's when they throw out lots of big things. Bonus if you can find a community/municipality that promotes this all at once. My community does this x2/year. It revolves around the trash cycle, as x2/year the trash hauler allows residents to throw away large items for free. So, these 2 days a year the curbs are loaded with items to upcycle. If you're feeling brave, my wife says you have an open invitation to come to St. Louis, MO and do this. She could even show you where to go.

My dad and I used to love "trash hunting" when I was a kid! 🥰 It's actually a pretty normal thing to do where I live. People place old items in good condition outside of their house for other people to pick up if they want free stuff. If no-one wants the items, the crane comes once per month to pick up the items and take them to the dump. Community members recycling old items is better for the environment, so we encourage people to do it. ☺️

Celebs don’t have private garbage service. I used to work for a very wealthy family as a PA/household manager I would have to listen for the garbage trucks, bring the cans to the truck just before it arrived then bring them back immediately after. This prevented the ugly cans from being seen from the curb and also stopped people going through the trash and getting personal info or DIY supplies.

These both turned out incredible!! My vote is for the mirror, it just blew me away. I agree with some other commenters that you could add a lower shelf to the cabinet using the same method as the dowels. That dowel method was super impressive!

To me, this competition was a draw. You both nailed it! If the feet of the cabinet were painted gold, Kelsey put golden ~aesthetic~ knobs and Becky’s mirror on top, it’d be [chef’s kiss] The happiest new year to the TSG crew ^^

TIP for when a lid doesn't open: just warm up some water close to boiling point and pour it sideways on the lid. The materials of the lid will expand or the product stuck in there will dissolve a bit and it'll open easily. Use a cloth to open it, this will increase friction so it's easier to open and it'll protect your skin. I've done this with oil paint tubes (those are the worst), normal paints, a bottle of vitrox solvent, literal glue.... it works with most stuff :) Edit: Both are such transformations! But I want that mirror! So aesthetic haha

I use danish oil often at work. That stuff dries into a tarry sludge. If you give it a few taps with a hammer (or screwdriver handle), it’ll usually dislodge. Or pry off the plastic cap and use a wrench. I’ve never had to resort to putting holes in the can, and some of those have been used only a few tablespoons at a time.

I honestly can't decide which I liked more! That mirror ... WOW! It's such an incredible piece, even just as it was! I'd have loved it on my dresser, but the accents, the gold paint and "antiquish" look gave it a whole new life! And that cabinet! Some might find it too tall, but the height is just about right! When looking for a sideboard piece like that, you want that height. Especially what is potentially a liquor sideboard. It's the perfect height for mixing and serving drinks, and those dowels not only added character but also function. Imagine hanging towels or cloth napkins when throwing a party! Easy access to wipe up drops or spills or added hooks for more glasses! All that's missing is a bucket of ice, and you're set!

Before Covid, our town would have “junk day” once a year. It was the day that the municipality would pick up all manner of large items as part of Spring clean up and recycle what they could. It was the best! The weekend before pick up people cruise around checking out everyone else’s “junk” in search of treasures. It is great for the environment because items find new life and don’t end up in the landfill and it is a fun community building activity. I have found amazing things like an antique rice bucket, a vintage portable mimeograph and a leaded glass French door. We found that the wealthiest neighborhoods have the worst trash.
