Hey guys. St. Catharines here. Been subbed for a while now. How much was your lack of sailing experience , HUUMM ? ? I , um , I , don't think I believe ya . LOL. Even your camera work, nice, really, nice. Anyway , you know and I know Lake Ontario can kill ya. Real quick. But damm it all , you are down where I always wanted to be. Like ' Sailing UMA ' says " don't buy a couch ". And don't ya know it , I did ! 40 years ago . I'm here [ and 40 years older ] and you guys are there. Stay there or keep sailing on around our beautiful ' Blue Dot '. Please don't stop making you videos. Us old farts need em. Stay healthy, stay safe, stay afloat.

May I suggest installing a solid welded stainless steel arch as far back to the stern as possible. That is what all people finally get to. Your solar panels over the biminy are not working most of the time because of the shade from the boom and main sail. And you should know by now, that only 10% overshade reduces the energy you get by 90% And also one more note. I might be mistaking, but it lookes to me, that you have installed solars directly on the stainless tubes. If so - that's a time bomb. NEVER let steel and aluminium get in direct contact - put some plastic between them
@SailingJibsea3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. When anchored, we just simply move the boom the the side in the morning to prevent blockage and it’s been working well for us to get fully charged
@konstantink78413 жыл бұрын
@@SailingJibsea Moving the boom aside works just fine! If you are anchored most of the day light. In the Med - where I sail, it is common to be underway most of the day, and anchor in the evening. So the solars have to work with the sails up, and the transome arch does the job

Well, that turned out pretty slick. Good job Travis. As far as not having enough power from you solar panels, and keep in mind I'm talking with ZERO experience so take it with a grain of salt and maybe someone that has the knowledge can throw their 2 cents in. I saw on another channel that stated, if a certain percentage of their solar was blocked by the sun the charge controller shut down, so if they had all panels going to one controller the entire thing would shut down if one side of the panels were shaded. The fix was to install a couple of charge controllers basically putting their panels in zones. This way one side was still bringing in juice while the other side may have shut down. Those charge controllers aren't cheap so a person would have to weigh cost to benefit. Again this is outside my field so hopefully someone can chime in and tell me I'm full of #### and stick to fishing or I may have a good point. lol

Beautiful underwater vid. My suggestion is, Do Not remove the battery. Just add 2 solar panels instead of just one. By lowering below your battery power will reduce how you live. She needs her power, Solar panels are lot cheaper than before, easy to add and of course make her happy. Your right the wind generator is just a give me power. Is your engine also a Charging source when used, if not, make it so. Do you have a Generator on board, If so, this can be used also with a min. amount of fuel on cloudy days. You should get 3 Solar's across, center one can be attached to the outer ones. Beautiful waters and Mountains, never been there. Some Day.
@geoffhunwick91513 жыл бұрын
A good ratio of solar to Ahs is if you have say 100ah battery you need 200watts of solar. We live just in the sun tropics of Australia no the coast and that ratio is good for our RV to have 100% charge on a good day by day 11am but that all changes with over cast days but most days we still reach float through the day. Love your travel footage of places we could get to so love you sharing your adventure we use. Geoff

Watts are a good starting point for panels but it's the efficiency of panels that really matters. Higher quality panels are far more efficient, albeit more expensive, than cheaper panels. Read the specs on the efficiency conversion of sunlight to energy which is expressed as a percentage.
@nuffsaid79523 жыл бұрын
My suggestion is do not remove a battery. Add solar panels, panels are cheap these days and the more battery storage you have the better. Look at whether you charge the house bank from the main engine also as this is good while motoring. Also if you have a generator, use it to boost the batteries on those cloudy days.

Hi there. Nice insights. Boatless at the moment sadly, so getting stuck in to what I need for my next Sailboat. Beamy Aft Cockpit, Custom 50mm x 1.6mm 316 stainless Steel Solar Arch, linking into Bimini, linking into the Sprayhood/Dodger. Arch to fit 4 x 250 watt High efficiency Monocrystalline Cells Panels, for 1,000 Watts, into 660 ah AGM House Bank. I'm avoiding Lithium at the moment, as there isn't enough solid Factual data in them for non damaging discharge levels- a manufacturer of Lifepo4 batteries has told me they get damaged each time they discharge below 50% Capacity, and rapid charging isn't very good for them plus there is a strong chance charging them over 85% reduces their service Life, just like with mobile phones and such. Getting AGM to have a useful 10 year service life isn't difficult. to get engine start, bow thruster, and Windlass batteries back up to 100% fast, there'll be a high output well cooled Alternator on the inboard engine, no generator,,and surplus outputbhelps top up the house Bank with a smart external regulator. I might try Carbon Lead for the House Bsttery Bank.

We have an Air Breeze wind turbine and it is great at bulk charging when the sun isn't out -but pretty much craps the bed once it hits absorption stage. It keeps braking and stopping since it isn't smart enough to throttle back like the solar panel controller can. It is even worse when we have a ton of wind and it is putting out 20+ amps. It'll run for 1 minute and when the voltage surges to 14v it brakes to a stop and won't start again for 5 minutes or so. That whole time the batteries are sinking again back to 12.6v or so. Then it does it all over again. So the batteries never get up higher than about 80% on a really cloudy dark day even when there is plenty of wind. But at least they aren't draining down to 50%, which would be bad. We have had 4-5 dark overcast days in a row when the batteries never got above 80%. If we had lithium batteries we would not have that issue but I really don't care that much because as long as it it keeping the batteries between 50-80% they can't be damaged. We can always equalize next week when the sun comes out again abd we are at 100% again. On sunny days we usually hit float or equalize every day by around 11. I have turned up the dropout voltage of the wind generator about .25v but don't want to turn it much higher for safety's sake.

they have panels up to 400w 24v panels keep in mind that one 100w/24v =2 100w/12v
@robertsylvain3333 жыл бұрын
Sorry man but your wrong, watts don't change with voltage
@s.v.gadder14433 жыл бұрын
Volts x amps = watts. I run 30v panels and a mppt so what happens is the charger breaks the voltage down to 12v and multiples the amps.
@robertsylvain3333 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly but the watts never change. 1amp x 100v=100watts. 100a x 1v=100watts again. If voltage goe up or down it doesn't matter just as long as the ratio is the same you get the same wattage
@robertsylvain3333 жыл бұрын
So one 100w panel at 24v does not equal 2x100w panels at 12v
