In America, “Happiness is a warm gun.” I am Canadian. I personally had a conversations with an American who could not understand “why, after coming here for thirty years, I STILL cannot bring my GUNS into Canada to go skiing at Whistler.” I asked this person why he needed his guns in order to ski. He looked at me like the answer was so obvious I must be crazy. Then, realizing I was a Canadian, he explained. “I’ve already killed one of them and the other one will be on a colostomy bag for life.” I was shocked. This man was boasting that he had murdered one human being and maimed another. Terror sank like a stone in the pit of my stomach. I was shaking inside as I forced myself to ask him , “Why?” “They were jacking my car!” He spoke with pride, as if it were obvious that the value of a car (which can be replaced,) is clearly far more precious than that of two sub-human lives, that his vigilante murder were justified as some kind of moral victory over evil. His smug, self-righteousness attitude told me everything I didn’t want to know about the level to which the soul of our neighbours to the south has sunk. By the way, last spring after a rare mass shooting in Nova Scotia, our Prime Minister banned the purchase, sake or possession of ALL Automatic weapons in Canada.

We already have the law on the books...18 USC 242...it's a Federal Crime to violate someone's Constitutional or statutory rights under color of law. This law was specifically written for bad cops, but Federal prosecutors almost never use it except in the most egregious cases. Despite the mountains of evidence that cops routinely violate peoples' rights, from illegal searches to excessive force to any one of about a million other possible violations, and almost every time it happens, the criminal cop is permitted to walk away, regardless of whether he/she is fired, suspended, retained or sued. We already have the law to hold cops accountable - no new legislation required - but it just sits there unused, because federal prosecutors won't use it. If we had a team of specially appointed prosecutors and judges specifically tasked with prosecuting nothing but 242 cases all day every day, we could finally reclaim our constitution from these criminal cops.

These bozo badge wearing killer cops especially, are not made for the streets. The department cannot train people to be street wise and responsive so they shoot. Signed: Philando Castile

Big mistake to not follow up with the Professor comment that in America "we have never taken the community seriously" ee have not recognized that there are effective in helping to reduce violence and increase safety, but we have not given the community the tools to use their input and ideas. I have been able to see where a difference can happen when local police and invested community members worked together....Of course, policing is just one part of the needed changes, but it is extremely important.

14:38 to 16:33 Not just kids school performance drop after violent incidents, but us adults too. We as individuals, a community, a state, a nation are effected by the traumatic residue of physical violence, as also economic violence. Longterm malaise and chronic dysfunction (as individuals, as well as as community) ensue long after the endless cycles of violent crimes (and its mirror) police and state-violence repeat themselves. I'm thinking of Detroit, Chicago, NYC, Atlanta, Baltimore, Minneapolis . . . and yes, Raqqa, Mosul, San Pedro de Sula, Tijuana, Mogadishu, Kabul . . . and many many more. All places where it's easier to buy an ammo-clip than a stick of butter.

He's so very right! We (as a society) have asked police to be brutal to potential criminals; all communities both white and black have supported "strong" policing. But this is the inevitable result of ignoring poverty and inequality--and expecting people to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps no matter how deep the hole they were born in. If the only opportunity to make a living in my neighborhood is selling drugs, then I will sell drugs. And who are the major customers of drug dealers?

Good discussion overall. The guy sense to have really done good analysis and his book will be interesting. However, I would have also liked the exploration asking this line: "What is the impact of the way a 911 call described the situation versus the police interaction?".
@elaineberg30953 жыл бұрын
If I was a police person, I would start rethinking my actions on the street. Just because you are police does not give you the right to be judge, jury and executioner. You are trained on how to make an arrest and what crimes require this. When people are killed for traffic infractions, passing a single counterfeit bill and asking questions of why they are being arrested are not killing offenses. Especially when these people are killed by white peoples without due process. It is time that guns are taken from the police. They have tasers, billy clubs and most importantly, words of mouth.

The professor has an interesting thesis and many of his interpretations are actionable. However, in order to accept the majority of his premise , one is forced to agree with the supposition that none of his findings address the fact that white communities don't have the same outcomes. Policing in the African American community started with slave catchers. Policing in the Mexican American community started with the Texas Rangers. Policing in the Indigenous communities started with the English settlers. The systemic nature of these undisputed facts is largely lost on the author's findings. Finally, it is a bit disingenuous not to include the fact that police departments are largely autonomous and did not have a federal mandate to keep statistical data on police involved shootings untill the year 2000. Thus, his benign statement of policing being an issue for decades. The police know, if there is no paper trail, it didn't happen. Therefore, if race is a factor based on what you lead with, that role is not a central role. A = For your study on children and the affects of violence on the performance in school. B = for the book recommendation C = For your interpretation of your findings and your inability to understand you should place race at the forefront of your interpretations. Additionally, you hold a position of great influence. If white males, in a racial hierarchical society don't stand up when they have the data and the platform, then nothing of significance will change.

The origin stories of policing departments always tell us why the mythology that has been passed to generation after generation might be. Confronting those mythologies (which justify violence against the traditional other) and changing the way police are trained. Not from the myth but from the reality of the people of the community.. can change things.

Is it the mayors of these communities pushing for more police instead of social programs, not the people in these communities? Also why not take guns away from the police. It use to be that way at least in Britain. Reduce gun availability, reduce violence? It sounds pretty simple but I know that idea would have people up in arms. Just a thought, though!

"All people are created equal." is a myth. There are people who are generally trustworthy and others are complete opposites and many varying degrees. MLK had a dream that people be judged on the content of their character. Prof Sharkey pointed out that stress can influence character.

At around 8:00 in the video, Martin asked for an example of people changing their stance on policing, and to some degree, abandoning a more holistic preventative solution, for a return to an increase in punitive measures. Sharkey cited Atlanta's Mayor's recent request, to hire 200 additional officers. He said that the return to punitive measures, when crime increases, is a natural phenomenon. Sharkey immediately followed with the statement that - evidence shows that residents and community organizations, are effective in controlling violence. I wish he had provided evidence, or Martin had asked for evidence of this, in communities where violence has existed in high levels, throughout the half century time period, that violence has been a major problem. Established stable functional communities can control violence more easily, because there are not the conditions nor a culture, that more readily fosters it. It is easier to patrol a community, when a criminal is more easily recognizable, because significant numbers of them, don't live among you. Part of the problem is, the 'Left' is not willing to admit, that culture plays a big roll, and it is not the "culture of poverty, so much as it is, the culture of criminality. Most people living in poverty, are not criminals, and certainly not the violent type. Many, if not most criminals in households living along the poverty line, are the exception, in their families. Their siblings take the normal route to support themselves and work to better their lives, but some, for various reasons, are drawn into, or willingly embrace, the culture of criminality. This choice may to some degree be personality driven, if it is ,sociologist and psychologist, need to do a better job of making the understanding of the process of human development, more understandable and practicable to the average person. Civics as well as returning the creative arts, industrial arts, and home economics, must be returned to the curriculum, of the worst schools in the country, so as better students and citizens will be produced. The curriculum of these schools have to be updated to keep students competitive with the rest of society. Proper or optimal parenting needed to be taught in schools. Of course it would have to also take into account non-traditional family structures, that exist today, but the basics of good parenting, should be emphasized throughout the society. The debate seems to be presented as an either or, question, but the two options can be equated with 'Marshall Law' and a 'Marshall Plan'. A 'Marshal Plan' is implemented, when control of a situation has been established. Rebuilding can not take place while fighting is still going on. This is is how I see the situation. The holistic/structural/long term efforts, have a better chance of working if the literal hemorrhaging in the streets is stopped early on. The same is true on the police side of the equation. The military culture/mentality of the police, has to change. They cannot have blanket immunity for wrongdoing. Even the military has their 'code of conduct' and punitive punishment. If only policing could be done immediately with "a few good men"? The first step in policing is the standards, a community sets for itself. The best way to defund police and prisons, is to make them largely unneeded. The bounds of morality have shifted to some degree, over time, but save for sex/sexuality, basic human values are still largely universality recognized, if only rhetorically. It is certainly a legitimate argument as to whether we are doing ourselves a disservice, as a specie, that we don't take them more seriously. When it comes to the law, those entrusted to enforce and uphold it, should be held to an even higher standard, of the law. How can the people have faith in and respect for the law, when those who represent it and apply it, disrespect and disobey it? Even members of the military don't get rights beyond the citizenry. The 'Policemen's Bill of Rights' should be repealed nationwide, but also these killing/shooting have to be viewed, and judged fairly as individual cases, and judged on the evidence and circumstances of each individual case. Finally, religious belief or spiritually, and even philosophical ideology, plays a significant role in the lives of people. They all have a sense of a superior idealism in common. One of the greatest ideals of enlightened or religious/spiritual human beings, is peace. We would all be more consistent with our higher selves, if we always kept the notion and possibility/hope of peace, in the forefront of our minds. George H.W. Bush and Margaret Thatcher, in the 90's proposed a 'peace dividend' to the nations of the world. We should be constantly reminding ourselves of how costly violence of all kind, is to us. It is costly to our physical and emotional health. It's cost is felt, but often not acknowledged, as being costly, in other areas of society, like insurance. A life is a terrible thing to waste, especially when no one knows what potential exist in that life, no matter what circumstances the person may be born into. The potential benefit each person has to humanity, can't be calculated, but we can imagine the possibilities. Is it too idealist to simply ask ourselves seriously, to give peace a chance, and can we all just get along, justly and equitably?

American culture is rooted in love of the gun. It's rooted in the "Cowboy hero", the white hat, versus the black hat, rooted in the Militaristic posture of the government. This is a reflection of the American, who based his power on the barrel of the gun, enforcing belief systems that enshrine the gun. The Military budget of the US Government is a symbol, militarized Police Departments is a symbol, Americans who choose the "Second Amendment rights, over the greater good of the Community is symbolic. Lastly and most importantly, the silence of the people who know better, who don't think they are impacted by a culture of violence, particularly since, Hollywood thrives on depicting violence in movies. Who has moral authority to speak out about this insanity.

This was purposeful, so don't say America hasn't known or done it's job. It's done it's job very well.

However the increasing amounts of hardware and the increasing militarization of the police seems to be corroborating points. Tanks and other military paraphernalia make our domestic streets look and feel like war zones at times.

Statistics can sometimes give perspective. To address the common police claim that they can violate rights "for their safety" : according to FBI numbers the police kill about 1000 people a year in the U S. The nearest "western" country to that is Canada with 38. Most European countries kill less than 10. Police deaths in the U S. average about 49 a year due to violence. But the highest number of police deaths are by vehicle accidents which they generally cause. In a rating of the most dangerous jobs logging is #1, law enforcement is #17. So which of these numbers should we be most concerned about? Who's safety is at the greatest risk? If the police are concerned about their safety, then they should address the #1 cause of deaths, vehicle accidents, mist of which they cause, and receive violations for speeding without an emergency or lights in, running stop lights and signs, not wearing their seat belts, have car inspections up to date, being distracted by their laptop or cell while driving, etc. I hear no concern about this nor concern about placing others at risk by their reckless driving. Numbers can give perspective rather than repeated baseless claims.
