I only discovered your channel today and I'm enjoying it very much. The tech stuff is very interesting to me and the quality of your work (e.g. hatch frames) looks very good. I started sailing almost 60 years ago and I've built and maintained a few off-the-beach boats. I sailed A-Class catamarans for many years. In the old days, before foam sandwich, carbon fibre, etc., we built the hulls with ply. They were very light and we needed to keep them that way. Epoxy was our friend. I thoroughly ^10 endorse your use of epoxy. Sealing and encapsulating timber with epoxy is brilliant. No rot. No water absorption. No weight gain. And an epoxy glue join is usually stronger than the joined items. One tip about laminating layers of timber using epoxy glue. If you use screws to hold the layers together while the glue sets, and then remove the screws when they are no longer needed, fill the screw holes with thin epoxy. If you haven't discovered it yet, check out the WEST system.

Glad you made it through. My girlfriend's neighborhood south of St. Augustine got hit hard. Lots of homes including hers flooded out. FEMA helped plus lots of good folks volunteered. Hurricanes can bring out the best in folks. Quiet a few big sailboats broke free and washed ashore. Some are still sitting there as of this post.

Ah see and old Freedom with it's wishbone rig at 4:51. In a way I can't help but think of Matthew as a modern day Joshua Slocom. First I have to say your joiner work from what I can see looks great. Also you choice of boats was a good one I think. First I like the design long keel with a center board is Ideal for the arctic though I may have missed it, I might have put some extra insulation in but that can be problematic in it's own right. All in all I'm impressed with you two... I will be following your adventures form here on out. The great thing for me is to know no matter how old or experienced one gets, there is always something new to learn when it comes to sailing. A never ending story! To bad it not a split rig...

Adding additional insulation is actually one of the first things we did last year. Unfortunately we started this vlog really far into the progress of the boat, but everything up to this point should still be documented in our blog if you'd like to check it out. www.mjsailing.com

I used West clear epoxy and 3 coats Captain's varnish on top of that for a companionway door. After about 5 years, it still looks fabulous with occasional recoat with varnish, but it's under a dodger so it stays mostly out of the sun. The danger of epoxy (I'm told) is that (a) it's not UV resistant and (b) if water gets under it somehow, it will make a big mess, and (c) If you ever have to wood the item again, good luck!! -- epoxy is remarkably resistant to heat guns and/or sanding-down. I've taken these words of advice to help motivate me to keep my epoxied wood freshly varnished.

I know all about time frames when it comes to boats. Had to replace an interior deck on my SeaSwrile and it took far too long. Great video, and the sound was fine, except when it was real windy. Wood looks great, including the maple floors. Check out videos of Sailing La Vagabonde for some video and boating info as they sail the world. I've been following this Aussie couple for about six months now. I guess aluminum isn't affected by the salt water, as I thought it would be. Although I would think that sailing around glaciers , and that cold water, in an aluminum boat, is going to make for some chilly nights. Looking forward to some more of your video's.

For me watching the retrofit is great, as you get to see the boat come together, and have to add, that woodwork is coming out beautiful! Don't despair using the epoxy in more places than originally planned, as it is a excellent idea, and will make that hard work you're putting in last for ages! Must say, Mathew is really good at it too. You guys do need to windproof a boom mic, but that is more so later episodes. And since this 1 is a early one, can tell you that in the future your motor is going to start and run fine after some hard work! Amazing how I can predict the future right? lol, the power of hindsight. Keep up the good work, although hope this isn't a '2 year' thing of ownership as that much work should make this your baby! Although, if you spot a nice aluminum 42'.... LOL. Don't have to say this, as any sailor knows, but the work never ends, as you always have something to work on, even on newer boats, but the good thing is you 2 will be able to handle it, unlike some I've run into out on the seas.

looking really nice....that maple cabin sole is so beautiful. and teak trim very sexy...keep up the hard work. take your time it pays off. from what I have seen you 2 will have almost tripled the value of that vessel when it hits the water. I prefer smaller plastic vessels now but Aluminum is considered a serious, go anywhere vessel that drives stiffly through glacier waters. I restored a custom 40 foot aluminum vessel ...was a labor of love and enjoyed sailing her in the Pacific. I know exactly what you are going through. some time you must say "enough is enough" and just put her in the water and go. I know it will be hard because you really have attention to detail that shows in your work and truly the jobs never end. It will never be done like you jokingly but knowingly referred to. looking forward to seeing you out there. Aloha

Trimarans although they sound ok in practice end up having less internal volume for habitation and storage than a catamaran or mono-hull. They're almost the same width as a catamaran, but three hulls are squeezed into that space, so it does not work out to be a popular combination.

Although I do a lot of woodworking, I don't work on boats .....yet. I was questioning how well varnish would stick to epoxy and apparently it works. The only thing I don't like is that varnish is a surface coating only and something like a stain actually penetrates wood well. Do you see people staining wood for boat applications? On a side note, what sailing/boat books have you found that you would recommend? Keep up the good work!

You two are great! And very inspirational. A question - I'm planning on covering the plain white fiberglass upper helm with mahogany, mostly for aesthetic purposes. From your experience so far, should I multi-coat the wood with clear epoxy like you did with the hatches, etc? Aluminum ,time to learn eeeevvveerry about galvanic action, I' ve seen boats grounded (electrically) try to discharge the keel which had sea water in it. I constantly had people approaching me on how to reseal pontoon boats I was at a lost to help them, other than new rebuilding. I still haven't been convinced that fg isn't the best although the old Valiants were sad and blisters can expensive to defeat. @MJSailing8 жыл бұрын
We know there will be expansions and contractions on the boat, but luckily any contractions to the hull due to cold water should not make it brittle. We hadn't heard of it being an issue for fellow boaters traveling in the areas we plan to, so our concern on it isn't terribly high.

Glad to hear Matthew was a non-event. Good reason for a party, always looking for that. Can you describe your Murphy bed, was this your own design. Never seen one on a boat ,thought it was ingenious. Best of luck...
@MJSailing8 жыл бұрын
It wasn't our design, but it's very creative! The boat actually came with it, although during our remodel we did widen the fold down area so there was more head room for the two of us to sleep while lying down. The design is pretty simple, when it's up it acts as the back of our forward salon, giving us extra sitting space. The mattress folds right up into it while closed. While it's down, it rests on the edge of the settee, and we just fold down the other half of the mattress. You can see a better explanation of it at minute 8 in our Walk-through video, 4 months into renovation.
@mattjohnson67168 жыл бұрын
Don't tell anyone. I like to take credit for the Murphy bed idea. Seriously, in all the design books I've read, photos looked at, and dreams about boats I've had, the idea never occurred to me. For a couple cruising alone (no privacy) or as a second guest berth, it makes perfect sense. A lot of french boats have open v-berths, but your still dedicating the entire 6 plus foot length to a bed. With ours, half is stationary, the other 3' fold-up gaining a ton of space. Genius! Matt

What motor for aux power?

Yanmar 4JH4E - 54 hp version. We still haven't started it (it's been sitting since 2007) , but it looks good so far. As soon as the welding is done, I can get the diesel out of the cockpit and access to the engine from the top. First fire-up should be in a month or two. Matt

Aluminium on ice? Here in Finland the boats we use in winter are steel, not aluminium. Aluminium is a soft metal... would not sail in ice...

I think you guys have a great KZbin channel in the making and I enjoy what you have done so far. If I could offer you some advice, I would say to cut your videos down to about 15 minutes or less. Make 2 videos out of your last one, hurricane part one, boat repairs part 2. More frequent videos and shorter videos. Take care, but I don't make anything on KZbin so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

Yeah, we didn't have intentions of it being this long, the Q&A was kind of a spur of the moment thing we tacked on the end. In the future we'll probably make it a separate segment or add it to the full video that is only 10 or so minutes long.

If you watch closely, you can see Jessica's eyes glass over during the q&a boat talk. I could ramble on about boats for hours, but since she's the one both behind the lens and the editing software, my segment gets brought down to a more manageable amount. When sitting in an island somewhere with low upload speeds and a beach calling, don't anticipate a 20-something minute video from us :) Matt
