🐍We’ve had some human/snake interaction over the Christmas period. It’s not surprising, given the Summer weather but one particular event demonstrated the need for first aid prep and applying it correctly, in order to give yourself the best chance of surviving a venomous bite.
🐍It also showed that exact snake ID is not urgent and, in most cases, not necessary at all.
🐍A QLD woman was bitten in her bed, while sleeping, according to what we can gather. The consensus is that the snake was not actually an Eastern Brown as stated but a Mulga (King Brown) Snake and according to the report, antivenom was dispatched with the paramedics (very unusual). The article doesn’t specify the type of antivenom but it’s likely it was a polyvalent antivenom that covers multiple snake species.
🐍Mostly, we don’t know exactly what happened but King Brown snakes aren’t actually part of the Brown Snake family but rather the Black Snake family.
🐍The important take away is that correct and effective first aid was applied, in the form a compression bandage. One way to think about it is, the antivenom can save your life but the compression bandage might keep you alive (and often symptom free) long enough to get you to the antivenom.
🐍Always assume a bite is from a venomous snake, unless you’re an ID expert.
🐍Apply the bandage FIRST, then call 000. If you call 000 first, there will be a delay where the venom will be moving in your lymphatic system. Best to stop it in its tracks, then call emergency services.
🐍Don’t worry about the species. It’s not necessary. Worry about that after you get help.
