Milunka's brother received call up papers for the first Balkan war, he was sick with TB. She chose to cut her hair, dress as a man , and go in his place. Her awards include : Order of the Star of Karadorde (twice), the highest Serbian award. The Serbian Milos Obilic medal. The Russian Cross of St. George The Legion d'Honneur (twice) , from France. The Croix de Guerre with gold palm, from France, she is the only female recipient of that award ever. The British medal of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael. The French offered her a pension if she moved to France, she declined preferring stay in Serbia. From Sabaton's 10th album, 2022's The War To End All Wars.

Per her Wiki. Milunka Savic was awarded the French Legion d'Honneur, twice. The Russian Cross of St. George. The British medal of the Most Distinguished order of St. Michael. The Serbian Milos Obilic medal. The French Croix de Guerre with gold palm. A perminamt memorial complex devoted to Milinka Savic was opened in 2020 in Josanicka Banja. Milunka was briefly married, producing a daughter. She adopted three orphan girls. Milunka worked as a night janitor, living in atrocious conditions. The French governmant offered her a pension which she refused. News spread after the ceremony in the Sabaton video, and with public preasure the Belgrade City Assembly gave her a decent apartment where she lived her last few remaining years. Milunka Savic.

She got into enemy trenches and threaten to blow everyone up with hand grenade unless the surrender. When they did, she exchanged them for Serbian prisoners (over 20), essentially saving double amount of lives. After WW2 she adopted several children which she raised as her own.

Just wanna say Milunka Savic is and always will be my #1 hero and idol. Not only is she a brave and amazing soldier, she's also a great person. She's the definition of what a strong powerful woman should be. She had a policy many soldiers didn't which is to only kill when necessary and her unusual tactics resulted in her capturing lots of enemies rather than killing them.

Agreed. She became a mother and in the inter war years was a mentor to many a young man. She was tasked with teaching young men what was right. She was respected by all nations who knew of her.

Thing I like the most in this video are small details that are very accurate. Like officer asking soldiers who should get medal - that was custom in serbian army. Also "new comander" because commander of Iron regiment died in Kolubara battle. And yes she was feared and respected, she was very skilled fearless soldier. She was also not just regular soldier but part of elite unit in most elite serbian army regiment. Crazy stuff, she was legend and still is among Serbs.

Milunka Savić joined the army instead of her brother. at that time women could not be soldiers. She skillfully disguised herself as a woman until she was wounded the third time. when they bandaged her, they saw that she was female. She was wounded a total of 9 times. After the war, France offered to live and be an honorary citizen of France, she refused and remained living a modest life in Serbia.

There is a story about her. She was wounded 7 or 9 times when they discovered she is the woman. After her recovery, she was summoned to report. They had to decide what to do with her. She insisted on sending her back to the front. The officer told her they needed time to make a decision and dismissed her. She went out and stood still in front of the office. After a few hours, the officer saw her standing still in the hallway. He approached her and asked her what she was doing there. They will make the decision in a few days. She said that she is waiting for their decision. He sent her back to the front.

There were a few other women in the serbian army, some of them from other nations, se for example Flora Sanders (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flora_Sandes) or Leslie Joy Whitehead (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_Joy_Whitehead) or for women in the russian army Maria Bochkareva (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Bochkareva) who was the first russian women who commanded a military unit. In WWII Russia also had a large number of female soldiers (they are estimated to have had around 2000 female snipers) and pilots (see "Night Witches - animated story video" by Sabaton).

Let's go! . Okay another really good one is "Hell and Back". About the most decorated soldier ever. There is one about the Warsaw ghetto uprising, they do a lot of Polish stuff and one of their bigger shows that you can find live videos of is in Poland and it's absolutely the thing of Goosebumps. Speaking of Goosebumps, En Livstid y krig" what's about an entire generation of men sent to the 10-year war, something like that, by the king of Sweden if you do the live in Gothenburg version, it will be more goosebump inspiring if you turn captions on then maybe no bullets fly where Christmas truce.

Fun fact: my grandfather met Milunka Savic during the Great Retreat also known as Albanian Golgatha, when, as a 15-year-old, he had to follow the Serbian army with tens of thousands of other underage recruits of the next year. However, the Allies sent the children to be educated in France instead of to fight on the front. He finished his schooling in Aix en Provence and then studied law. Meanwhile, Milunka Savic fought on the Salonika front until the liberation of Serbia. After the war, my grandfather became a syndic at the Yugoslavian mortgage bank in Belgrade. He heard that Milunka Savic was having difficulties making a living and hired her as a cleaner for the directorate's offices - until April 6, 1941, when the next war finally came to Yugoslavia. what a charming chauvinist, right?

You know, thing slike this are one of the reasons why I get so upset about modern hollywood trying to "cleanse history". They are obsessed with the girl power message and will try to rewrite history to insert it, when instead they COULD be making movies about women like Milunka or the Night Witches. It's a pride thing back then for all nations. I believe she got into some trouble during WWII and spent some time in a prison.1942 she rejected the invitation from the nationalist collaborator Milan Nedic to attend a banquet organized for German officers and generals. I believe her reply was, "During the war, I killed Germans. I do not eat with them!"
