“My countrymen called me a traitor. My Canadian neighbors called me a Nazi. They would never understand.” - Franz Stilger No matter what was said about you in life, you sir, will always be remembered as the man who had the courage to not pull the trigger. And that, I believe, is one hell of a legacy to leave behind.

As someone from BC and close to the Vancouver Area, it's absolutely despicable that fellow Canadians called him a Nazi. Nazis don't show mercy and compassion. That is a stain on us. He was a German, fighting for his country, nothing more. His humanity should of been celebrated.

what's also funny is that his family hated hitler and his policies/the genocide. unfortunately, he was still a soldier in the german army and, as such, he was duty bound to fight for him and his fatherland. i believe he was even conscripted (might be wrong on that though) so he had no choice regardless of his opinion.

@@tylerjerabek5204 exactly. unfortunately it's something a lot of people refuse to even register. they just see a German soldier in that time period and immediately think of them as Nazi's when in fact probably most of them hated what was happening.

Stigler had been trained to never fire on an airman in a parachute. He regarded the plane as being so badly damaged that it was analogous to a parachute for the crew, so it would have been dishonorable to fire on it. He then escorted the bomber past the German anti-aircraft artillery guns, which would not fire close to his plane. It is a fantastic true story of humanity prevailing even in war.
@patrickdasp5609
@patrickdasp5609 Жыл бұрын
This. Also to mention that Stigler was one air fight victory away from getting the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross which was the highest honor a German soldier could get during the Nazi regime. But like you wrote Stigler remembered the words of Gustav Rödel who was Stiglers commanding officer in North Africa "If I ever see you shooting a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself". Yes my ancestors committed quite some crimes during that time but there were also some honorable persons during those harsh war times.
@asvagar8163
@asvagar8163 Жыл бұрын
Rödel was also the trainer of german fighter ace Adolf Galland. and Galland told every man on his wing the same. "I see you shooting at a man in a chute, i'll get into my plane and shoot you down myself." strangely enough, that kind of chivalry was not only between pilots, but also tank and ship crews. you don't kill the man, you take out the machine
@Shiftry87
@Shiftry87 Жыл бұрын
@@asvagar8163 I cant say i have ever heard that revolving tanks as even a single infantry man can be a threat to a tank if they have grenades on them to destroy the treads if they manage to get close ofc. But for the navy and air force absolutly. If a pilot manage to survive the destruction of there plane they are no longer a threat to u so firing at a chute was considered lack of honor and many trainers in WW2 was veterans from WW1 and back then it was even worse if u did that. Same goes for the navy, if a sailor manage to survive the sinking of there ship they do not deserve to die freezing in the middle of the ocean so if there is no longer a threat to your ship u start pulling sailors out of the water. Subs were the only exception as they were already cramped and hade no real way to keep any pow onboard.

Sabaton is a Swedish metal band, most of their songs are about Military History. A sabaton is the foot piece in a medieval suit of armor. Formed in 1999, lead singer Joakim Broden and bassist Par Sundstrom are the primary songwriters , and the only original members left. They tell the story without taking sides. The current lineup seen here includes guitarist Chris Rorland (joined 2012), guitarist Tommy Johansson (j. 2016), and drummer Hannes van Dahl (j. 2014). Franz Stiglers commander had told them that if they ever shot a man in a parachute, he would shoot them himself. Franz felt shooting a plane so badly damaged, and unable to fight back, was akin to that. Charlie took Franz to a reunion, Franz felt uncomfortable and not sure if he should be there. Charlie told him that everyone there was family to the men he spared. What the video didn't show is that the band took the time to personally meet with the Stigler family at the concert. The Mom, Jovita Theren-Stigler, is active on KZbin, and will sometimes leave a comment on reactions to this song. "Christmas Truce" is a Sabaton song that we recommend , and is perfect for the season.

Hello, ladies! If you liked this video, I have three others 1) Night Witches, Animated Story Video 2) Christmas Truce 3) Bismarck But Sabaton is the metal band history teacher you didn't know you needed! And just to clarify, Franz Stigler, the BF-109 pilot, did what he did because his Flight Training Officer had once told him, "If you ever shoot down a man in a parachute, I'll kill you myself." Franz Stigler saw the Pub, the B-17, as helpless as a man in a parachute. But that isn't all there is to the story. After Franz and Charlie became friends, he had been invited to a reunion of his wartime air unit, the 378th Bombing Group. Charlie then invited Franz to go with him, and after finding out what Franz had done for the Pub, was made an honorary member of the 378th. When Franz said he had done nothing special, one of the wives of the surviving aircrew of the Pub turned to him and said, "Look around you, Mr. Stigler. The children and grandchildren of the men you saved that day would not be here now, if not for the actions you took that December day. You did more than you know." Which is, in my opinion, the moral of the story: We never truly know how we affect others, or what consequences our actions may have with regards to other people. Merry Christmas, ladies, and have a very merry holiday season!

If I remember right from reading the book about those two pilots Franz Stigler was an ace pilot with somewhere around 27 kills at that point. However he considered shooting down that bomber as cowardly an act as shooting a defenceless man in a parachute.
@randomlyentertaining8287
@randomlyentertaining8287 9 ай бұрын
I believe he had four and that any pilot that got five kills (ace status) would automatically get the Knight's Cross, Germany's highest base award for valor (additional pieces like oak leaves could be added for later acts of bravery to increase the "level" of the award). That's where the line "Said goodbye to the cross he deserved" came from because Stigler never got another kill during the war and so never got the Knight's Cross.

Hi ladies, subscriber from Oregon. Didnt check the comments but assume someone may have mentioned that Floor Jansen from Nightwish is married to the drummer for Sabaton. In their "Christmas Truce" video, he is the light haired fellow hurt by a hand grenade at the beginning and comes up out of the trenches to begin the brief "truce". She also is the singer at the end during the credits of that video. My father was a B17 bomber mechanic who had to patch up or part out the planes too damaged when they came back from bombing runs. Many never came back and so he lost many friends. He was stationed at Horham Air Base England for 3 years during WWII. By the way, they do a video in honor of women in military of a group of Russian female pilots you might check called "Night Witches" .

If you want an awesome live song with Sabaton you should react to en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg. The album Carolus Rex they released during that time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) from a time when Sweden was a much bigger nation with ambitions of expanding. The album was released with both a Swedish and English version, the difference being that the Swedish one tells the story from our/a Swedish soldier's view while the English is more from an outsider observer's view. It is the Swedish version they played during that show so be sure you have the subtitles on. I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

Sabaton has a loooong list of history based music. A bit of advice, Sabaton videos often have dedications (in memory of...) and/or messages (war know knows no...) at the end, so watching to the very end is recommended. Actually, Sabaton have won awards for being educators of the public (not much money, but prestige), they have a history channel on KZbin where they talk about the history behind the songs (over 100 at present), and why/how they made the song/video. Animated STORY videos, short history lessons with music videos in them, followed by concluding history), you will likely have enough explained in these to get you interested to find out more. No bullets fly you just saw. Night witches abou female bombers during ww2 and their success despite the bad equipment and discrimination... Lady of the dark female ww1 warhero and leader of soldiers. Red baron, famous fighter pilot in ww1 Epic ones (official not the lyric videos) Bismark, about the sinking of the ship Defence of Moscow, self explained Christmas truce, about the spontaneous truce in some parts of the western front during Christmas 1914 40:1, about polish soldiers, badly outnumbered (just under 750 in all) facing 42 000 germans, they where BADLY outgunned desperately defending against the German invasion 1939. Uprising, the Warsaw Uprising during 1944. To hell and back: they tell the story of Audie Murphy (highly decorated) and his struggle AFTER the war, so about PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers can face. Fields of Verdun: the 300+ day long battle fought there. Price of a mile: about the battle of Passchendaele in WW1 Screaming Eagles: about the battle of the Bulge Royal guards and Livgardet in that order, they are partially intertwined and tell a story (Sabaton do that), both about the history behind Swedish Royal guards, written to celebrate the 500 year anniversary of Livgardet (Royal guards in Swedish). Unkillable soldier: About Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart. the acting deliberately simulates "plot armour" and acting in videogames/movies where hero never has bad outcomes to injury. he actually went through MORE in reality, survived plane crashes, escaped POW camp… served Boer war, WW1, WW2 and few minor in-between. Live performances: 40:1 from poland Uprising from Poland Uprising, live from Poland. En livstid i krig live from Göteborg Sweden (in Swedish but there are subtitles), very heavy again, about thoughts of a young man going to war. Swedish pagans, live from Wacken 2019 (with Tina Guo). These are just some, there are plenty more.

When Franz Stigler said "IT WASN'T EASY", I thought because of the uneasy rivalry of WW2. When Charlie Brown invited Franz Stigler to the WW2 Airborne reunion, many WW2 Airborne veterans gave Franz an uneasy welcome and one yelled "Nazi" to Franz. But Charlie was able to make Franz feel welcome and they became good friends. In 2008, Franz passed away and a few months later in 2008, Charlie Brown passed away.

Thats why the band also said they wont do any songs on "recent" conflicts as there are still too fresh to have historians and similar scholars saying "Yes that is what exactly happened". But they also have some songs that are not telling stories so those are "just" songs

There’s a story during WW2 in the pacific where if I remember right Japanese pilots flew over an American airbase and dropped a note saying the following day they would come back and perform and air show for them. The next day a few Japanese planes came back and did just that. They did rolls and loops over the runway for a few minutes all the while the US guns didn’t fire on them and people on the ground enjoyed the show. After a while the Japanese planes returned back to their base undamaged and the following day the war continued. Truth is way stranger than fiction.

Indeed, it's true. All of their songs have truth to them. They even have their Sabaton History channel that talks about each of their songs and the true story they're based on in great detail. In an interview Franz said as he was lining up the shot, he saw the tail gunner bleeding profusely and couldn't do it. As he escorted them to safety, he also flew close enough so that ground weapons couldn't be fired, for fear of hitting him too. What a guy!! I HIGHLY recommend seeing the full animated story to Night Witches(the 7:22 one, the other one is just the song). It tells of Soviet women flying in flimsy threadbare planes and taking on the Germans by cutting their engines and swooping in silently, dealing devastating blows.

There’s so many sabaton songs that hit hard. They have a history channel that goes along with most songs so maybe watch that first then show the song or show both. The last stand, 82nd all the way, uprising live in Poland woodstock, the attack of the dead men, the lady of the dark, Christmas truce to name a few

Great reaction guys and a good first pick! Pretty much all Sabaton songs are based on real historic events,mainly military. If i may suggest a few more songs to watch I'd go with Lady of the Dark ( animated version ),about Milunca Savič,one of the most decorated female soldiers in history. Christmas Truce,about the unofficial truce that took place during Christmas on the western front in 1914. Or Sabatons version of the motörhead song 1916. I could go on and on,you pretty much can't go wrong with Sabaton!

Best regards from Germany PS: There are some short videos on youtube of a documentary including the pictures you see here. Its pretty awesome. And its cool to listen to both em talk for a little longer. Its really a piece of history and there are probably 100s of stories like this on all battlefields in all wars that there have ever been.

As the Grandson of a man who flew in a B-17 over Germany in WWII, this story really hits near the heart. These ladies need a full dose of Sabaton. May I suggest “To Hell and Back” based on a poem by the most decorated Soldier in US history, Audie Murphy, and titled after his autobiography. PTSD awareness is still required.

There are many incredible stories that Sabaton has told with their music, I hope you enjoy going down the rabbit hole :) "Christmas Truce" is a must, it's about what I truly think is one of the most remarkable moments in human history. "Lady Of The Dark" has another animated story video, I think by the same studio that did this one.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Sabaton! They do almost exclusively songs about wartime, but really they are songs about people - their bravery, compassion, determination, ingenuity, and the tragedy when such things are lost to the world. Always watch to the end, and when doing animations make sure it's the Animated STORY Video, as some also have animated music videos which skip the extras. I look forward to more...

Yes Christmas Truce and 1916 official videos are both a must. You should also take a look at the new album by Tarja (former Nightwish singer) called Dark Christmas. You'll recognise the songs but will never have heard them like this before. Official videos to be watched of course.

I don't know if you ladies remember doing a reaction a month or two ago of a Tommy J doing a Celine Dion cover, It's all coming back to me now, well Tommy is one of the current guitarrists in Sabaton so you might recognise him if you react to any video of Sabaton from 2016 up until now. By the way I can't wait for you to do another Tommy reaction so can we please have one soon, mostly as he does a load of chrsitmas covers on his channel.

Hello, Ladies! Sabaton are indeed the world's coolest history teachers. I've learned so much about aspects of military history that I didn't know - and I consider myself a nerd! I hope you and your families have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year! You will also love the other animated story videos that Sabaton has done in collaboration with YarnHub. Cheers from the middle of Canada! (which is NOT living up to its fearsomely cold reputation yet this year, for some odd reason)

I am a new subscriber and the first reaction I watched was Grand Funk Railroad "Inside Looking Out."" They were one of my favorite bands and I saw them live many times and they were one of the very best live bands in the business but the critics didn't like them and despite their popularity with fans and their incredible talent and awesome live shows they never got the recognition that they deserved. I started going to concerts in the 60s and went to more than I can remember. Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osborne as the front man was one of the most memorable concerts that I attended in the early 70s. I would love for you three to react to the song "War Pigs" from their second album released in 1970 called Paranoid. Thank you very much and Merry Christmas to all of you and to everyone watching and have a Happy New Year.

They do leave a few details out, after landing Brown passed out and they had to drag him out of the B-17, because of the cold and hypoxia he didn't realize he had been hit with a 30 caliber round and was bleeding out. The official account from the German side was Franz followed them over the white sea and engaged, and the b-17 spun in, which means on the record it was an unconfirmed aerial victory, had be actually shot it down, where there would have been witnesses, he would have had the knights cross for it. They knights cross had a point system, a flying fortress being a 4 engine bomber is worth 3 points in that system. He had 27 points. The knights cross is awarded at 30. So he was one bomber away had he actually taken them out, he'd have gotten the knights cross for it. Also that he tried to signal to them to land in German territory at a nearby airfield to be taken prisoner because Stigler did not believe that plane could make it home, when he realized they were going to make a run for the white sea, where they'd have to pass the AA guns, he made the decision to stay in close to the German AA wouldn't engage them at the risk of hitting him. It's also worth doing some digging, I've seen the aftermath pictures of ye olde pub, the actual photos from after landing, and the animation does an okay job illustrating it, but seeing the actual plane that banged up, ripped open, and honestly barely held together is a powerful image knowing the story. Seriously it's a wonder it didn't break apart on landing, the mid/rear fuselage was all but gone. The rear stabilizer was almost completely cut off. Not for a reaction but to really understand just how devastated that poor plane was, and why Stigler would see it the same as if they were in a parachute.

Sabaton has a ton of songs that I love. Three that I highly recommend are To Hell and Back, the animated Lady in the Dark, and Soldiers of Heaven. I see you already did Christmas Truce; I’m watching that one next. Also I saw you reacted to Nightwish. The lead singer Floor from Nightwish is the wife of one of the guitarist in Sabaton. The female vocals at the end of Christmas Truce during the credits is Floor. 1916 is one of my more recent favorites.
