We visit Aptera! Q&A with Chris Anthony - April 5, 2022

This is sooo much more interesting than every other interview I've seen with Chris Anthony. Most of the time, he's stuck in salesman mode (see the Jay Leno video, ugh) but here, it's clear that he realizes he's dealing with someone who knows much more than the average interviewer and is speaking to Steve like a peer, and Chris comes across as much more frank and technically knowledgeable. I think this will do a great job of instilling more consumer confidence in Aptera generally.

Chris is actually a finance guy by education not an engineer. Steve Fambro is the engineer. That being said Chris has done several technical ventures in boats and batteries and started as an engineering major so I believe he is far more well versed in technical matters than most finance people.

No one can predict the future and whether they will ultimately be successful or not, but it won't be from lack of effort or greed! It really is exciting. I was impressed with how much Chris knows. I can't wait to get my Aptera. The big concern I have is just how much of the design still isn't locked down yet this close to production. There were several things mentioned that are critical decisions. It is seeming less and less likely to me that they will be manufacturing anything at all by the end of this year. Probably not even next year. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

As they fu** around painting the door hinges, trimming the fenders and messing with solar panels, without a billionaire backing them, it will be a perpetual dream. "We're still working with suppliers" means they don't have anyone that has committed to work with them. I really wanted one. Oh well.

I know a thousand miles range is stupid on the surface, but when the temperature drops to -32 degrees and you run into a 60 mph head wind going up hill in a blizzard you will be glad you had the extra juice. If this sounds like a once in a lifetime thing, know that it is Interstate 80 for several months in the winter, and a few other roads.

@@robertkirchner7981 agreed.... That's what I've pre-ordered as well. Most of the time I'll just need 60 or 70 mi range so I'll lose a bit of efficiency but not all of it. Yet when it really matters 600 will get me out of arms way... If the way is filled with trouble then at least I'll have a great shot at getting to where I need to go. Plus the capacity to boondock and/or build-up/store-up reserve power from portable solar panels I already own.

@@robertkirchner7981 Gotta say I find it interesting the CEO isn't getting the "top model" and even refers to it as a "beast". The extra range isn't useful for most people and the weight will impact how the vehicle handles. Once they have production builds I suspect the different models acceleration and competence in the moose test will differ quite a bit. Given even the 25kw can feed the 3 motors at full power (with a full pack - maybe a little less with voltage loss when party discharged) and general attitude wouldn't expect a deliberate nerf for the smaller packs acceleration which means they will be the fastest.

@@Sam-gf1eb Not what I meant. Having an industry standard MC4 connection means that you could in theory use any standard solar panel. There's a big question surrounding max voltages, grounding, and how resilient that connection is to getting unplugged and plugged back in repeatedly. I doubt it was designed for that.

Steve, excellent video! I understand that it might be a conflict of interest but you might consider working for Aptera doing these interviews. At least get a major discount on a vehicle and hopefully one of the first to get delivery. The Aptera marketing team should have been putting this type of video out at least monthly. If Aptera is really going to deliver production vehicles by the end of 2022, it would be worth a monthly trip for you to get an update. If things are on schedule and delivery is happening at the end of the year, you will really boost the confidence of so many people who are interested in this vehicle. As a former project manager, I know how these things go and timelines do often slip but even if that happens (and likely will) transparency is enormously important. Some of Chris's replies were a bit concerning if they are going to make production vehicles by the end of the year. At this point, the production vehicle should be near design complete. Sure, there will be some minor changes that will likely happen up until August but their suppliers can't just retool over night. There might only be 6 major assemblies that are put together at the Aptera facility but there are still ~1070 parts that need to be put together. Getting those 6 major assemblies to Carlsbad for assembly is a major undertaking given the supply chain issues we are seeing. If you can get down to Aptera on a monthly basis, that would be awesome. This is by far the best video about Aptera that I have seen and I have seen most of them that have been published so far. Your approach on not trying to get an angle or story or to feed your own KZbin channel was good. You asked good questions and got honest answers. I understand that a monthly trip to Aptera is costly in time and money for you. I hope Aptera sees the enormous value in this video alone and will somehow work with you to make this happen. Even if it was an on-sight video every 6 weeks, it would be a goldmine for them and really give us a ton of good information.

I would be careful about taking this as absolute confirmation; I think he was theorycrafting (which obviously he should be careful about... don't want to be Elon). They will probably have trouble removing that heat passively. They need to work out a deal which is made public and solve technical challenges to charge that fast.

@@ccibinel I agree. You might be able to charge at that rate but that is an enormous amount of heat that will have to be dissipated. I have found that fast charging or discharging can really do a number on the battery life. Heat becomes a big factor.

Aptera has previously said they would have 50 kW DC charging which would be 500 miles/hour. Faster charging than this would make cooling more difficult, increase weight, and reduce the battery lifetime. The CCS connector and cable can handle much higher power than the Tesla US connector/cable, so Tesla will need to phase out their own plug soon, although both are fine for 50-150kW. CCS is required in Europe, so no point for Aptera to use a US-only Tesla plug. CCS just needs an adapter to plug into a Supercharger once Tesla allows it.

I think that unless they have found a way to change the hardware with little cost impact, the design limits the maximum charging rate to 50 kW DC 0 or about 500 mph at the full charge rate.

Yes, the argument that “people rarely drive more than 300 miles without stopping” is valid. And finding a place that offers food, rest and bathroom is easy. BUT, finding a working charger may not be as easy at the present time, and for an unknown number of months/years into the future. Case-in-point.. I sometimes drive to visit family. It is 440 miles from my home to the first charging opportunity (a Tesla Supercharger and a two-outlet destination charger). The other route is 600 miles to my destination, miles with no charge points visible on any map. Gas stations are basically every 30-50 miles apart at most. So ICE it is. 🥺 Yes, I would LOVE a 1000-mile Aptera.

Great interview, Steve. Really interesting to hear Chris talk about the philosophy of Aptera and the ways they have learned from previous ventures and will likely avoid some of the bumpy roads other EV start-ups have encountered getting their vehicles to production and scaling up that production. However, Aptera certainly has their work cut out for them to get a production vehicle out the door by the end of the year. Not impossible, but it'll definitely be a challenge. I really like that information about a plug for external solar panels, A lot of RV's now come with a plug for portable solar panels and that would be a great thing to have unless they would maybe incorporate it into the charge port if they were going to have a dongle for vehicle to load it could be made to accept line in from external solar. I saw an episode of Black Mirror where a woman drives to a building in the desert and unfolds a solar panel across he trunk of her car and plugs it in before going inside. I just like the idea of being able to charge without a grid and flexible and folding panels would fit nicely in that hatchback floor

This is what I want to see! Honesty, engineering, progress. It instills so much more confidence than the marketing videos they put out themselves. I'd rather see them owning up that one or two things will not be there in the first production models, than seeing a video saying everything is amazing. Thanks for asking these questions. Maybe next time you can also get some info on the safety systems. Not just the structural behavior of the vehicle. It's great that the deformation of the body towards the passengers is minimized and that the impact is elongated. Now I just want to know what systems are in place to avoid the passengers from hitting the walls (airbags).

Great stuff. TBD if his statements regarding tesla is confirmation we get the plug - hope so but many don't. Chris kinda went wide with V2L since it is simply providing an AC plug and not a complex V2G solution which admittedly is not really an off the shelf option yet. Always love to hear we get more storage space. Great they are still thinking of other finishes and think in the right conditions a wrap may last 20 years (I park in a garage). PS: I just noticed with the new logo. Shouldn't the interrupted circle be in the inner one - I assume it is meant to be read as an abbreviation of Owners Club from left to right. Currently it reads "Club Owners" which is kinda a different idea (or french). PSS: Yes I know owners club in french is club des propriétaires but the point is its backwards.

As someone who engineers stuff, I hope Aptera can ignore basically every single request in this video. Here is why: every little thing you're asking for would multiply (not add to) the complexity of the car. This inflates the price, slows down delivery, and increases risk. Here is what I want: An Aptera with just enough features to make it a commuter car. Suspension, drivetrain, heat, A/C, lights, seats, airbags, waterproofing/weatherproofing, soundproof where you can. THESE are all the major obstacles that we as Aptera supporters should be most interested in right now. Hell, leave the solar roof panels off the car for the first delivery... just make this car and make it remotely close to the sale price... you'll have a winner. After that you can and will add all these upgrades to make the car even more amazing. But until then, KISS.

Thanks Steve. This was more informative than most of their updates and interviews so far because Chris didn't have to first go through all of the introductory newbie questions, and right got to the current and most important ones on our minds today. The only kinda-bad news that I got from this was that AWD will likely be delayed in the first run of production. And therefore I will probably need to change my order to FWD, with the possibility of adding the rear motor later. So that I don't have to wait an extra 6 months to get mine. Most likely other reservation holders will think the same way, and the unfortunate side effect will be fewer AWD orders, which will in turn lower their priority to add them. It seems to me that they could just add the extra motor initially (for acceleration), and then enhance the motor control later to gain the torque vectoring features using software updates as they develop them. It was good that you asked about the safety testing (which is important) but I think that even more vital to outside confidence in the Aptera will be their 3rd party efficiency, range, performance, and real world solar testing. So many of Aptera's power use and range specs have been estimated with software. And until we see the verified, real-world, FWD/AWD/full-solar, production intent Apteras tested, more and more prospective buyers will be doubtful about the Aptera's bold efficiency claims. Maybe to the point of not taking Aptera seriously.

I'd be happy if they put all of the wiring and plugs in the FWD vehicle to enable a straight swap out and over the air update to the CPU to make it all work. They would then be able to get production humming and offer it as an upgrade.

8:30 Reducing HVAC weight that much just for human comfort leads me to believe the battery will not be able to be cooled with refrigerant to coolant heat exchanger. Because it does need considerable capacity to move heat from two loops at once.

I wish companies like Aptera would stop overthinking cooled seats. Ventilated seats are easy. A simple DC fan (like a computer fan) with flexible ductwork and perforated seat covers. If you want to get fancy, add an a/c duct where the seat fan pull air from. Just having air flow through the seating surface would have a cooling effect.

I have watched a few other videos on this vehicle and after watching this video I changed my battery pack selection from the 600 to the 400 mile range. On trips I generally drive 600 to 700 miles a day but it seems to me I can accomplish charging at meal stops to get me to where I need to go that day. No need to spend the extra dollars. Also during the video it was discussed there are still issues developing the 60 watt battery packs so the 40 watt vehicles will probably get delivered first.
