The shell is an abalone shell, quite small and they come much bigger. There used to be abalone fishing, using divers, around the {California" Channel Islands off Santa Barbara. The boats went out early morning and returned in the evening. Each abalone yielded two abalone steaks and they had to be pounded twice with a 4-lb wooden mallet to soften them. I knew the owner of one of the fisheries and he employed Vietnamese men to do the processing. He calculated that every night each one lifted the equivalent of a couple of tons with his right hand. They could arm-wrestle much bigger men! This was the 1970's-80's and I believe that the abalone are now protected and fishing banned. I still have a dozen or so large abalone shells from back then.

Nope nada never ever again went to the same place to sample some of the Welsh food on offer came away with a serious bout of food poisoning the incident was reported to the authorities no actions taken so if you all value your health then avoid wt all costs
