I just want to stress that Blizzard never apologized. That they said during BlizzCon wasn’t an apology, that was PR nonsense.
@dreambrother16
@dreambrother16 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's not an apology if you refuse to even say the name(/ pseudonym) of the person you wronged OR what you did wrong (and by extension show you understand why it was wrong) OR make any kind of changes to the system that allowed it to happen.

@@dreambrother16 They're cowards. They're afraid of angering people in their focus group. They're afraid of befouling the image worshipped by the cargo cult. Publically traded companies should get out of entertainment, and serve more generic markets. I wouldn't outlaw them, but I would boycott them for eternity.

@jo mo mo Did they pissed anybody at all? Every publication I know happily covered BlizzCon and the release of CoD soon after (remember, they are _Activision_ Blizzard). I know that I deleted my Blizzard account (I’m not into their games too, so I never used it), but how many others did? It seems that it was not enough for them to even address it properly. I’m not saying that we should not do anything because it’s not going to work, we totally should, I’m just… I’m cynical, basically. To be very clear: I’m not (trying to be) racist against China, I’m against the Chinese government. And I’m not saying that game journalists are the enemy, I just think that they should be more responsible in what and how they cover and not be unpaid hype machines for those corporations.
@dreambrother16
@dreambrother16 4 жыл бұрын
@@alsorew Just because PC Gamer and the like took Blizzcon as an opportunity to become marketing stooges for Blizzard and forget about what they did does not mean everyone else did. I know enough people deleted accounts that their system stopped working and stopped allowing people to do so for a brief period (idk if that was intentional on their part or not) so it must have been a lot. I think the more pertinent question is how many people reinstalled or re-bought their games? How many people took the hype bait of extremely premature game announcements made with the specific intention of distracting from this topic and essentially forgave or forgot Blizzard's actions? Maybe the ongoing financial hit they've taken is noticeable to them, maybe not, but the talk around it has certainly died down; this is the first bit of actual coverage I've seen in months. Realistically there's not much we can do on an individual level except keep mentioning it to keep it in people's minds and keep boycotting Blizzard. Side note: I've taken to referring only to the PRC and/ or Tencent when talking about that side of things as I feel it puts the blame where it should be and is sufficiently distinct from China as a whole.

It doesn't matter if Blizzard apologizes. Corporations apologize all the time, but it's never sincere. They have lots of money, they can hire professional apologists or consultants to train their PR guys to make an apology. There's no face of blizzard anymore (unlike in the 90s or early 2000s), it's just a souless corporation. They'll walk over you if you let them. They're too big to see anything, nor does any particular employee actually run the show. This is the fate of publically traded companies. Personally, I'm not against publically traded companies, only ones that produce entertainment - because it's always some cargo cult. Entertainment is a creative endeavor, not a focus group. I will boycott companies such as Blizzard forever.

I think for me this highlights the gap between when a cooporation or an organisation wants to have good values that support diversity, freedom of expression, etc, but hasn't yet fully worked through the commitment that that involves. As you say these situations will inevitably arise because we don't yet live in a world where everyone has equal rights. Courageous individuals will feel moved to act on those values and beliefs to try and change things. It stands out to me that Blitzchung was willing to put his career on the line, and also that he felt responsible towards the 2 casters who were also punished. That's the level of social consciousness he brings with him to the situation - he is thinking beyond himself in what he does. I really appreciated this interview. What I like about PMG is also that quality of looking beyond the immediate situation, and seeing the systems or the history that are also in play. Thank you for bringing that thoughtful perspective to these issues.

You slowed down your speech noticeably and provided a lot of pauses for him to process but have never treated him as “stupid”. ESL speakers are incredibly smart but when you interview them in English, especially on such high level topics, the language barrier is notable. It felt really genuine and in the interest of fair journalism that you clearly acknowledged that barrier and gave him the chance to respond with his own English vocabulary.

I think its good for companies to remain apolitical, however in Blizzard's shoes the smartest thing they could have done is just let Blitzchung say his bit and then not take any action on it. Even if you want to stay out of politics as a company, or if you're trying to cozy up to a dictatorship, if someone wins a massive tournament they've earned the right to say whatever they want once the camera goes on them. If they swear, censor it, but otherwise let them speak - it doesn't reflect on you as a company.

@@mrnickmoodie where are you seeing this? I ABSOLUTELY agree that people hold up the CCP as a way to shoot down socialism....it's maddening and infuriating because with something like less than 7% of the marketshare being publicly owned, China meets no actual definition of socialism that exists. It does, however, meet the fully propagandized version that the U.S. has been pushing since McCarthyism--capital is power and capitalism wants to reign supreme. I am an avowed anarcho-socialist....as in, I have actually read Marx, Kropotkin, etc. With that said I can still sit here and say that I think the CCP is evil and total shit. Their human rights abuses are well documented and are even more brazen than those of the U.S.--which is saying something, given how our government takes advantage of the nationalist rhetoric and pride of its citizens. Americans will blast other (less white) nations for doing things which pale compared to our own documented atrocities which are ignored or denied. Like dude....I GET IT. But I haven't seen Chris beating the capitalist drum? Being against China isn't being anti-socialist. Yes. There are some people out there who just dislike China because they call themselves Communist, and for all the reasons I'm certain you know we have a well documented smear campaign against all forms of monetary systems which don't prioritize capital. Our government has effectively made "communism" and "socialism" into synonyms for "totalitarianism". I hate it. But flipping the other way isn't a solution either. And I'm just not seeing where PMG is banging the capitalist drum.

HI, as an 61yr old life long Socialist/Communist I am well versed in Marx thanks. To not recognise that each attempt at socialism will have it's own characteristics (cultural/economic/environmental) and won't 'hit the ground running' as fully Socialist is naive as I'm sure you recognise. I point out and will continue to point out when people (even unwittingly) let little snide digs at people trying to get over the repulsive system of capitalism. Now, with this chap here, it's not malice (I would hope) but ignorance and considring the anti-socialist/anti-communist spouted continuosly I'm not surprised, dismayed but not surprised. I will continue to point these things out. The US literally has slavery going on, planned, incarcerated slavery and more people incarcerated than China (by far) and more people in prison today that throughout the life of the CCCP. The human misery caused by Capitalism as we speak and historically has no compare to those countries which are trying raise the conditions of the common people (something capitalism may pretend to do but it knows it needs poverty and unemployment to function). Now, I'm not going to say the Chinese system is 'perfect' that would be foolish but y'know on a scale of nastiness the US (and othe ccapitalist states) are way off the scale worse. I won't even go into the massive upscaling of US military build up all around the Pacific practically circling in that part of the world and the pre-war rhetoric coming from capitalist politician's mouths daily. Capitalism needs war and, tbh, you will see WWIII in your lifetime and it will be a capitalist country (cough, the US) that instigates it. The whole 'China bad'........I will not accept ti from westerners sitting comfortably while their own countries are exploiting their own and other workers (murdering daily) Worldwide, even flippant unthinking comments. With the recent legal case against ActivisionBlizzard it’s starting to feel like they’re trying to be the least likable video game publisher. Also RIP Hong Kong it’s just another part of China now.

Any company that doesn't support the protests in Hong Kong doesn't support democracy and the freedom that should come with that. We need to end opressive dictatorships, not punish people for standing up to them.

Not really going against china politics I.e Hong Kong protests companies supporting that lead to china cutting business with them which would bankrupt a lot of companies they’re not against democracy or freedom there against significant financial damage to business

This was the event that made me swear off Blizzard games forever. Not because of what they did to Blitzchung. It's shitty, but they have clear language in their contracts with the players and the tournament rules about pulling stunts like he did. I support Hong Kong, but if he had used the opportunity to speak out AGAINST HK then I would want him banned for life. Blizzard has to protect the integrity of their brand and I understand that. What they DIDN'T have to do, and the reason I stopped purchasing their products, is punishing the fucking CASTERS. They didn't do ANYTHING to warrant that. They were there to give a normal post-match interview, Blitz came on and did his thing, and Blizzard slaps those guys in the face. What were they supposed to do? If a 4chan troll managed to win a tournament and came into an interview and just shouted the n-word over and over, would Blizzard penalize the casters of THAT interview? I don't think they would. They only did it in this case as a gross overreaction in an attempt to placate Chinese fans and Tencent. To say nothing of the recent lawsuit brought against them, the contents of which should surprise absolutely no one.

Your feelings closely mirror mine. Although it's worth noting that they didn't try to discourage him when he said he was going to do it, just that they'd let him and cut away after. But all the same- yeah, ending someone's career for someone *else's* crime (and at that a crime closely in line with the values you've been tying to your brand image for years) is cruel and the fact nobody really talks about this doesn't sit right with me.
@Kimmaline
@Kimmaline 2 жыл бұрын
@@carlbutcher2268 thank you for this, I've been trying to find out what the casters even did to get punished as well. I mean, I assumed it was BS, I've been involved in social justice work for over 20yrs now and very little about China or its dirty business connections could surprise me at this point I fathom. But I figured there had to be something that was being pointed to past the typical CCP excuse of "proximity to the bad is the same as conscious culpability."
@carlbutcher2268
@carlbutcher2268 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kimmaline Yeah. There is an actual reason. It's still a spineless act of pre-emptive capitulation from a company that pretends to be better than that, but ultimately Blizzard are following the money and that means doing what the CCP wants without the CCP asking.

I disagree with your first point. If you have to protect your corporation's integrity even at the cost of someone else's voice on issues that matter, then maybe you shouldn't advertise "every voice matters" as one of your company's core values. You set up the expectation that you will acknowledge and protect your players' voices. Which is a clear contrast to what your legal terms advocate for. Blizzard shouldn't have set those expectations.

@@zxcvb_bvcxz Shortly after this post, I started asking in trade-chat within Warcraft about him. After a week or so of bringing him up, one person said he's active and in tournaments, but I wasn't able to get proof. There's a lot of these high profile people disagreeing with China and then going missing for a at least a bit. The billionaire Jack Ma was one, but reports say he's alive and in hiding.

Everyone knows that we don’t live in a bubble as much as we want to. I get gaming when it comes to being an escape. But at some point, the outside world will interfere. Blitzchung did the most honorable thing with the power he had after winning Hearthstone. Activision Blizzard’s response was unacceptable. Seeing this video proved further that Blitzchung is in the right.
