I’m old. When I was young my dad raised rabbits for food and then for show. Wanting to help my dad I would clean the hutches an remove the piles of “turds” Mom taught me much about gardening. Rabbit manure was a fantastic fertilizer. I frequently sowed leaf lettuce and spinach directly on to of the manure pile. Best ever harvest. And all performed in a “clandestine” and forbidden way in the midst of a small and forbiding city environment. Both sides of my family were from European subsistence farmer heritage….most likely many hundreds of years and generations. I take my fellow American families of similar experience and extraction close to heart. God bless you and yours. Please keep the young ones interested, invested, and in the loop! ❤️❤️❤️

Definitely some great ideas for a sheep/bee/chicken/hay/now rabbit farmer just getting started. We just ordered the welded wire to build new cages but i didn’t really have a good design. This is definitely a winning idea! Thanks for showing this! We have a bulk meat rabbit buyer so we can keep our does busy on a commercial schedule. But with our four barns over 10 acres we needed organization. 2 barns of sheep and now one of rabbits and we are looking at the fourth barn for rabbits as well so we can move to an 800 doe breeding program. But as a newcomer I have to plan ahead for feed by the ton but overall everything is within 50 miles of us. Thanks again! What a great info. Video!

This is a great video for a lot of information, especially for newbies. My comments will be directed specifically at the Tamuks! Remember these are amazing Commercial Rabbits! I have never had to examine sperm under a microscope with this breed. I would say this isn't necessary until you start noticing a problem with a buck being non-productive (which I never had either). If you do, I would simply cull that buck. I do agree with them about watching the production of the does AND the bucks. One thing I will say about the metal dividers is that they will restrict the ventilation between your bucks. I wouldn't use them UNLESS you have problems with the bucks. If the cages are large enough, your problems will be less. I recommend the cages for the bucks be 30X30. I recommend the does with babies be 24/30 by 36. I LOVE that they know which buck throws smaller babies and use them on the first timers. Excellent information. He also mentioned how they choose the top out of the litters to keep for breeders, excellent point. Before I had the Tamuks and for those of you who don't have them, NZW and Californias are considered a Class 6 rabbit. I would use a Class 4 rabbit for my new breeders for the same purpose, to have the first time mom have smaller rabbits. Seems that after the first time, they are fine and honestly with the Tamuks, I never had problems with this, but it is still a good idea to pay attention and take advantage of the situation if you have it. I also agree that with the Tamuks, as he said, you should be able to get 4 fall offs in 3 - 5 minutes without you having to help or be involved in any way. One presentation, 4 fall offs. You NEED that many fall offs for higher number of kits and it keeps your bucks happy. LOL He is talking about cross breeding the californians and the New Zealands with the Tamuks and saying that they were out performing the Tamuk alone. I did not ever see that and would not recommend it. NORMALLY you can take advantage of hybrid vitality by crossing the calis and NZW. It is automatically built in to the Tamuks so you don't have to worry about having to achieve it. IF you don't have the Tamuks, definitely use the cross of the breeds to achieve the hybrid vitality. Then rebreed that cross BACK to another Cali or NZW, then back down the line back and forth. Pulling the BEST out of your litters to improve your herd. He talks about his evaporator cooler. It only works in certain areas. I was told that it didn't work in humid areas, which I'm interested in seeing how well it works for them in MS, I would think that it wouldn't, but happy if it does. I'm excited that he shows specifically how he does all of the watering projects as well as the cooler. Just to clarify, it is best that quarantine should be away from ALL of your existing rabbits. I understand that the ones they have are going to be butchered BUT if you brought in something deadly, it could knock out all of your profit for six months or something. I'd be more cautious. I also prefer to have a rabbitry on ground rather than concrete, but if that is what you have, then . . . .Concrete does nothing to absorb the urine, which means that all that ammonia gas is hanging area and steps need to be taken to eliminate it to keep you from having sick rabbits. The one thing that I would say about their set up is I think the building really needs more ventilation. Having some vents at the sides on the bottom of the building as well as more vents on the ends would give them more air flow. It is important with rabbits that you have an air exchange rate of 15 turns per hour. www.raising-rabbits.com/rabbit-health.html The building is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, I'd just make a few minor tweaks to it. I'd like to see the fans pulling in fresh air, which would mean a hole or vent in the wall behind them. Pulling the air from inside the barn as they are could lean to respiratory problems. I didn't see the other end of this barn. Ideally it would be fairly OPEN to facilitate the movement of the air. The slanted cages are nice, BUT they do cut out some of the indoor space for the rabbits. The other man talks about having wooden cages. I have to comment on that. Wooden cages can lead to coccidiosis. I generally feed 1 oz to each pound of rabbit. Once a rabbit is bred, I begin free feeding. I free feed does with kits and all my fryers. I prefer a feed that has 18% protein, 18% OR MORE Fiber, and Less than 2% fat. Country Acres always worked for me. I totally agree with what the woman said in the beginning. She wanted to give her rabbits a break over the summer during the heat and now she can't get them to bred. There are two reasons why that may be. IF her rabbits got TOO hot for too long, bucks AND DOES can go sterile. Above 85 degree becomes the point where you start worrying. I recommend your have thermometers in various places in your barn so you KNOW what the temps are in there. 90 degrees and up is where you can start seeing heat stroke in "normal" rabbits. Typically the Tamuks if you have adequate ventilation are still eating and moving about. I don't want to guarantee anything but with our barn and our ventilation system, we had them producing during 95 to 100 degree weather. The thing to remember is that there are a number of factors that come into play to make your Tamuks this successful. He touches on the fact that they have large litters. Everyone should be seeing an average of 10 to 12 kits per litter. They should also be seeing weights of 5 pounds by 8 to 10 weeks. You can produce 8 litters a year with the Tamuks. The variables that make this level of success happen are: Correct lighting, Adequate ventilation, Sanitation of your herd, Proper Food (type and quantity), Water quality, Size of cages (small cages make for small fryers), number of fall offs during breeding, and condition of your buck and doe. I would like to see your record cards to help people see how to do that. Also, like to see how you dispose of the poop off of the concrete floor. Do you just wash it with a hose or?

Put deep litter on the floor and add chickens. No smell and lots of GREAT compost! PLUS, another product to sell.
@HisWayHomestead3 жыл бұрын
The only problem with putting chickens in with them is that the chickens like to roost on top of the cages and poop all over the rabbits.
@SwiftsScents3 жыл бұрын
@@HisWayHomestead Other farms I've seen have wire on the tops of the cages so the chickens can't get up there. :)

We’ve actually done that. I’d rather keep them separate. We’ve had the chickens jump up and peck the feeders and knocked feed dust out of it.

Hello, what are the benefits for having the nest be below the cages like that? Thank you!
@HisWayHomestead Жыл бұрын
It’s much easier for the babies to get back into the nest. A lot of times they latch onto momma and get dragged out of the nest. A traditional nest box, they can’t get back in and can die outside the nest.

Very nice setup for rabbits that you're breeding but I have one question where is there hay I don't see no Timothy Hay and none of the cages for the bunnies and I do think the cages should be a little bigger
@HisWayHomestead2 жыл бұрын
This is a commercial meat rabbit setup. Much different than having a pet rabbit. They are fed pellets. According to university extension offices, the size of the cage is correct.
@dustinfisher29 Жыл бұрын
Why no hay for their digestive system or solid boards to sit on to protect the hox'?
@HisWayHomestead Жыл бұрын
There is plenty of fiber in the pellets and the wire mesh on the floor is tight enough to not cause problems. They are meat rabbits. Their life span is 10-12 weeks.
@Daddyfarmer3 жыл бұрын
Good fences make good goats. If you have enough acreage you don’t need to feed anything except in the winter and it still ain’t much. Also we have 6 rabbits but want to go bigger. Look into feeding just hay. I just watched a guy and he only feeds hay.

Thanks! If you’re raising rabbits for meat, I’m not sure if you could get enough protein from just hay. But not buying pellets is very appealing.

I got introduced to rabbit meat in the service stationed in Germany . I have looked around and can't find a source in my area for meat rabbit. funny story I asked at my local grocery store and they had frozen rabbit whole it was a little wild rabbit that was so tough and stringy I had to borrow some false teeth to chew it ! but if you have never ate meat rabbit it is wonderful , you will never be happy with a chicken leg again after tasting a fat meat rabbit leg. The rabbit leg and thigh is bigger than your outstretched hand and is over a pound each try it you won't be sorry!

What would you say the advantages of the slant front cages are ?

it is so much easier to access the rabbits. with a square cage with a door in the front, it's a long reach to get to a rabbit in the back of the cage. This allows you to reach all of the cage so much easier.
