I got out of the army in 1971 and built up a farm with the idea of selling produce, pigs and eggs. I fenced in a large amount of woodland for my pigs and my chickens ran free. I did ok selling pigs for a long while, but nobody wanted to buy eggs, they always said they wanted caged eggs and they can get them cheaper at the store. I did sell quite a bit of produce, but now that I'm old I just raise for my family. Mr. Salatin has a way of creating markets and that is what you must have to live a life like that. He also has a lot of knowledge and younger people need to take notice of that.

That's messed up, to consciously choose caged over free range.

I think the biggest challenges for the new homesteaders trying to be self sufficient is determing your expectations for your under 5 acre farm. The first being are u wanting to produce sustainable income or self sustaining food for living resources. Water resource becomes your #1 concern involving cost & sustainability. Any acreage determines your direction between vegetation vs animal husbandry. Make that distinction & go

this gives me so much peace, after seeing all the homesteading videos, showing places that should be on magazine covers, and mine looking very much like Joel's. From gates leaning against a building to using whatever supplies I can find to tack together a shelter, or buckets for anything that fits in them. Thank you for giving me this little bit of insight. If it works who cares, besides my husband, what it looks like?

@@Melidontcare You don't really need that much land. It helps but you can live simply with a small house on a large plot of land. Even just purchasing a tiny house or trailer on 10 acres or so would be more than enough to get started and to slowly expand.

You did well man. Showing what a man can achieve with the potential God created in nature. I'm a believer in "creation potency". God doesn't bless certain individuals more than others. HE bless Hardwork. When HE finished creating on sixth day HE looked and saw that it was GOOD. God meant the potential of all that HE created was set and ready to be MANAGED/EXPLORED/CULTIVATED. So one farmer cannot really "claim" being blessed as such, whatever we achieve is the result of "creational potential "

clev hay The man has done backbreaking work his entire life while taking big risks, alone. This is the life my grandfather loved. But most farmers around the world trade farming for wage labor when they can. I know some third world immigrants who love farming, did it in primitive conditions in their homeland, but they choose the amenities of the city now.

But that all chickens were so happy and spoiled; but that factory farmers were both successfully sued and prosecuted for cruel, behind closed door, exploitative practices regarding animal and fowl alike; but that fellow citizens would disavow the practices, hence products of the factory farmer while supporting en masse the farmer of holistic, range free, certified humane practices: Boy!!! The all things, healing that would take place thru out our country. One day such will no longer be a dream, but, in fact, a reality. Not, I expect in my lifetime, but one day. Blessings to all those helping to bring it about!
