when talking about redemption of rita, it does translate over to power rangers in later season. when zordon died in "power rangers in space", his spirit created a wave of goodness that purged the galaxy of all evil. creatures of pure evil were killed and humans who were corrupted by evil were purified, among them being lord zedd and rita. in "mystic force", turns out rita became the ultimate guardian of good magic.

Or as she is known there, the Mystic Mother. Her past as Rita Repulsa doesn't get a mention, unfortunately. Only those who followed the show up to that point knew what happened. That said, where was her & Lord Zedd's villainous son? Did he not care enough about the Power Rangers to bother with stopping the spandex-clad heroes that had caused his parents' reformation that he resented?

I like that in Japan there is a parody that the sentai meet the “American powerful rangers” which call the sentai knock off of them. The red and green ranger have American flag on their costume and were the stereotypical loud Americans that shoot first and ask questions later

*Billy* is actually the *strongest* character in this game, bar none. Every other character (the *Triceratops Ranger* included) must land *eight* regular punches on a sturdy Putty, to make it hit the canvas for good. Billy only needs *five* regular punches to do so! I guess that the game designers had to repay Billy with that, to compensate for his *ridiculous* sprites. A nice plus for you Billy fans out there.

Here in Brazil Power Rangers was a success despite not being a novelty. We already saw four super sentai before in late 80's/early 90's :Goggle V,Changeman,Flashman and Maskman. Changeman alongside Juspion was a cultural phenomenom here on par with Saint Seiya,Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z.

This game was my childhood. It’s honestly my favorite game of all time. I’ll never forget when I got it and could never get past level 3 when I was 7 lol. I always consider it to be the standard to play PR games in human form and then ranger form.

Nah, the reason Tommy isn't in the game is the budget. Of course, we all noticed, that the morphed Rangers are all color swaps of the red ranger regardless male or female. And in order for them to include Tommy they would've not only had to include an additional model for his civilian form, but they also would've had to create another entirely new model for his morphed form because of the shield and then another new model for his dragonzord. For developers with extremely limited cartridge space compared to today, that wouldnt have been the best use of resources as they would've been making 3 seperate new models for 1 single character while they weren't even making 1 additional model to color swap and use on TWO characters for the morphed female models. And while Tommy was bar none the most popular at the time, majority of the promotional material and merchandise from season 1 featured the core 5 rangers only so they were able to sell the brand of power rangers as a whole to kids w/o including him since he was simply an extension to the team at the time. Furthermore, during Season 2 Tommy was even more popular than before and had become a focal point of the show. The promotional material and merchandisebecause of this had moved towards including all 6 rangers or just him alone. From here, he was never left out of anything ever again as selling the brand of power rangers now had to include Tommy in everything in order to reflect that the merchandise being pushed was needed to be purchased because it current and reflected what you saw on the show season 2-3 vs mostly the core team in season 1.

In America, _MMPR_ first started in 1993, though. So, you were a few months late on seeing it as a kid. Even more so, Super Sentai (the Japanese series that begat the Americanized spinoff) isn't the only way Rita Repulsa (Intergalatic Space Witch Bandora in Japan) earned her redemption. At the end of the "Zordon" era, in which Zordon gave his lifeforce energy to defeat all of the villains that had existed from the _MMPR_ to _In Space_ seasons, from Rita Repulsa & Lord Zedd (the latter of the two was an American exclusive baddie added to the 2nd & 3rd seasons of _MMPR_ after he initially sealed the sorceress back into her space dumpster & sent her spiraling back into space, only for her to return during Lord Zedd's recharging period [during the interium, despite supposedly successfully destroying the original Dinozords & robbing Tommy Oliver of his Green Ranger powers with a more improved variation of the Green Candle, Lord Zedd began to suffer defeat upon defeat much like Rita Repulsa had once the Rangers regrouped & came back with the Thunderzords that were made from the remnants of the original Dinozords -- Tommy's Dragonzord was spared, as it, much like the atomic lizard kaiju Godzilla which inspired it, was merely sent back to the underwater depths using the Dragon Flute -- meanwhile Tommy himself was given the more heroic White Ranger costume, weaponry -- including a talking saber named Saba -- and the Tigerzord that Zordon claimed was made out of the light of pure goodness so it could never be turned to evil, even though the truth was that the Thunderzords, White Ranger costume, weaponry, and the Tigerzord were all lifted straight from the Super Sentai series following Zyuranger known as Dairanger, with the White Ranger in Japan obviously being portrayed by a different performer due to the death of the Green Ranger Bari, who was the brother to the Japanese Red Ranger in Zyuranger, so there was much more of an emotional impact to the loss felt when Bari died, in comparison to Jason David Frank initially planning to do some other cheesy sci-fi space opera action series instead of the 2nd & 3rd seasons of _MMPR_ following Austin St. John's Jason, Walter Jones' Zack, and Thuy Trang's Trini departure from the show due to a pay dispute with Haim Saban, only to be coaxed back to reprise Tommy Oliver again & subsequently be the new leader of the team once the Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers were replaced, not to mention the fact that his character & Amy Jo Johnson's Kimberly Hart had become an on-screen Power Couple right up until Amy Jo Johnson had Kimberly exit the show too, with the character of Katherine "Kat" Hillard not only slipping into her predecessor's Pink Ranger role, but also becoming Tommy's new love interest even while diehard fans weren't as keen to the new ship as they were to the old one, which unknowingly led to the BOOM! comics' creation of Lord Drakken, a dark dystopian mirror universe version of Tommy, a few decades later] by slipping in a love potion into the recharging hose & although it seemed that Rita Repulsa only used the love potion to get Lord Zedd to fall in love with her so she could reclaim her position of power at first, it woud turn out that, even after the affects of the love potion had worn off, Lord Zedd had genuinelly fallen in love with Rita Repulsa, so they became a villanous couple in their own right, even if Rita's father Master Vile didn't really care too much for his daughter's choice of husband once he came to stay with the makeshift family of villains during the last episodes of _MMPR_ season 3 before the _Zeo_ seasons began), the remnants of the Machine Empire (the main antagonists of the _Zeo_ seasons), Divaneaux, Andromeda, and even Dark Specter (the purported leader of all of the major & minor villains of the "Zordon" era, who was introduced during the final seasons of the whole era, superceding even the diety Lokar/Satan in terms of villainy), when Zordon's energy wave was released, all of the "monster" villains (both the well-known ones like Goldar, Scorpina, Finster, Squat, Babboo, and all of the recurring villains-of-the-week), the remnants of the Machine Empire, and Dark Specter were all destroyed, whereas the "human" ones like Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd (Yes, despite his most well-known look, Lord Zedd had, at one time, been human), Andromeda, etc. were given redemption arcs & redeemed. In spite of the birth of Lord Zedd & Rita Repulsa's villainous son (who deeply resented the reformation of his parents), we would need to fast forward to the _Mystic Force_ series to catch back up with the reformed Rita Repulsa, because it's in that series where she herself becomes the wise sagely mentor to that iteration of the Power Rangers, known to them as the Mystic Mother. The TLDR version: Following Zordon's self-sacrifice in the last episode of _Power Rangers: In Space_ & the destruction or redemption of every villain up to that point, the franchise, as Americans understood it, was supposed to end. Only it didn't. It just kept on going, as new Super Sentai were being created & so, new post-Zordon _Power Rangers_ series were being developed concurrently as a result. It wasn't until Haim Saban stopped the franchise's connection with longtime merchandise developer/toymaker BANDAI that the Americanized _Power Rangers_ formally separated itself mostly from its Super Sentai inspiration, with the newest versions of _Power Rangers_ being developed in New Zealand rather than relying on pre-recorded stock footage from Japan (or in the case of the 2nd & 3rd seasons of _MMPR_ featuring Lord Zedd as headline villain or the Lord Zedd X Rita Repulsa villainous couple as the leading villains, Japan created footage specific for the Americanized _Power Rangers_ predominately divorced from the mainline Super Sentai series). In the _Mystic Force_ series, a reformed Rita Repulsa IS the Mystic Mother, the wise sagely mentor to that particular iteration of the Power Rangers.

Great analysis! I had no idea about the deeper plot in the Japanese tv show. I'd love to watch your analysis on the Power Rangers The Movie Game. It has the green turned white ranger and the gameplay is smoother. With two lanes to play on because there was multiplayer. I did love the feel of the zord battles in this game, it's a pity there is not many of them, nor do they have the variety on offer for the zords in the multitude of Sega Power Rangers titles, which between the Game Gear and Mega Drive titles covers every major zord combination from the pilot to S2 and the Movie.. Power Rangers Movie on SNES was a huge step back from this game. Combos were gone, enemies were all one-hit affairs, and the zord battles didn't even exist. Perhaps the most disappointing of all the Power Rangers games we've had. At least we also got Power Rangers Fighting Edition, which was excellent and it's a shame they didn't just build it into Power Rangers : The Movie's SNES edition.

For me the SNES Game is still the best Power Rangers game till today!!! Eveno so yes, I also missed a two player mode. At least we could fight against each other with Megazords and Monsters thanks to cheat codes.^^

I don't think empathy has ever erased justice or grief was a valid excuse to take it out on the world; you can do gain redemption, but you won't escape punishment for those deeds. I think that is the complexity often overlooked. The fantastical element is someone once at the mass control level reforming just doesn't happen in reality because those of a disposition and mentality seek that. I think kids could have taken a lot from the original story overall and that someone bad can be forgiven even if not looking at the exact story for that moral lesson. The Green Ranger redeemed himself and then died as atonement in the sacrificial trope fashion for such a character. Western media seldom trusted kids with anything of depth and still does. Animation is still seen as cartoons for kids or immature in nature (and often is), while anime and tokusatsu appeals to all age ranges in Japan. Even so, I think kids watching Power Rangers did still gain the same lesson to a degree from Tommy. However, there are people that can't be redeemed and do evil acts without conscious, thus why good vs evil remains a central and realistic plot. Unless one wants to have a nuanced look at Charles Manson and Mao, you might be the next stage of Suicide Girl.
